Taxonomy & naming
Physoschistura ranikhetensis was described by Singh & Das in 2019 in the Uttar Pradesh Journal of Zoology, based on specimens from the Ganga River basin near Ranikhet, Uttarakhand, India. The description was notable for reporting the first record of the genus Physoschistura from the Ganga drainage, extending the known range of this predominantly Himalayan and Southeast Asian genus.
Physoschistura sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with genera such as Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and Oxynoemacheilus splitting and re-splitting as the group is revised. The genus placement here follows the original description and is treated as current; the Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid combination. The species epithet ranikhetensis refers to Ranikhet, the town near the type locality.
Morphology
The original description characterises Physoschistura ranikhetensis as an elongate-bodied nemacheilid with a body depth at the dorsal-fin origin of about 12.0–13.4% standard length. The lateral line is incomplete, extending only slightly beyond the base of the anal fin — a common condition among stone loaches. The flanks carry a series of 14–15 oblique black bars, giving the fish a barred rather than blotched or spotted pattern.
Diagnostic details separating it from close congeners include the absence of a suborbital flap, a relatively short caudal peduncle (about 39.5–60.0% of head length), the lack of an axillary pelvic-fin lobe, and an emarginate (shallowly forked) caudal fin. No absolute standard or total length has been published in the sources available for this profile, and like most Nemacheilidae it is presumed to be a small fish, likely well under 4 in, though this cannot be stated with confidence from the current literature.
Habitat
The type locality lies in the Ganga River drainage near Ranikhet, in the Kumaon Himalaya of Uttarakhand — hill-country streams at moderate to high elevation. As with other Nemacheilidae, the species is expected to inhabit clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams with a gravel or stone substrate, the classic "stone loach" habitat shared across the family from Europe to the eastern Himalaya.
No dedicated water-chemistry survey of the type stream has been published in the sources reviewed here. Based on the family and on well-studied congeners such as the European stone loach, cool, moderately hard, near-neutral water in the range of roughly 64–75 °F with a pH around 7.0–7.5 is a reasonable inference for this Himalayan foothill population, though this should be read as an estimate from related species rather than a measurement of P. ranikhetensis itself.
Feeding
No feeding study specific to Physoschistura ranikhetensis has been published. Nemacheilidae as a family are benthic micro-predators, working the stream bed with a small ventral mouth to pick off aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates dislodged from gravel and stone. There is no indication that this species departs from that pattern.
In the near-total absence of aquarium reports, feeding recommendations for this species can only be extrapolated from its relatives: small sinking live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped blackworm — would be expected to suit a fish built to hunt invertebrates in fast water, with little interest in floating flake.
Mating
No sexual dimorphism, courtship behaviour or spawning account has been published for Physoschistura ranikhetensis. Data on reproduction in this species is effectively absent from the literature reviewed here, which is unsurprising for a stream endemic described only in 2019 and never established in the aquarium hobby.
What can be said comes from the wider genus and family: Nemacheilidae are egg-scattering fish with no elaborate pair-bonding or nest-building behaviour documented, spawning opportunistically over gravel in flowing water. There is no basis to assume anything more specific for this species.
Breeding
As with virtually all Nemacheilidae stone and brook loaches, Physoschistura ranikhetensis is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, broadcasting eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward — the standard reproductive mode across this family. No captive or wild breeding observation specific to this species has been documented.
This species has, as far as the available sources show, never been kept or bred in the aquarium hobby. It should be treated as data-sparse on breeding: honestly, there is nothing published to report beyond the family-level pattern, and no home-aquarium spawning should be expected or claimed.
In the aquarium
Physoschistura ranikhetensis is not established in the aquarium trade and there are no husbandry reports to draw on. If it or close congeners were ever offered, the family-level expectations for Nemacheilidae stone loaches would apply: a cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, flowing setup with a gravel or stone substrate, since these are running-water fish rather than still-water species.
As a near-scaleless loach, any Physoschistura would be expected to share the family's sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, meaning careful, reduced dosing would be prudent if disease treatment were ever needed. Given the complete lack of trade or captive history, none of this should be read as tested advice — it is a conservative extrapolation from the wider stone-loach family, offered because there is nothing more specific to say.
Conservation
Physoschistura ranikhetensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; it carries no conservation status here beyond Not Evaluated. Described only in 2019 from a single stream system near Ranikhet in the Ganga basin, it appears to be a narrow-range endemic, a common situation among recently described Nemacheilidae and one that typically warrants caution even without a formal assessment.
There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species — it does not appear to be traded. Any conservation concern would most plausibly stem from habitat pressures typical of Himalayan foothill streams in the Ganga basin, such as water abstraction, pollution and development, but no species-specific assessment of these pressures has been published.
