Physoschistura yunnaniloides is a small stone loach described in 2011 from the Chindwin River drainage of Myanmar, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the largest and least-celebrated loach family, made up almost entirely of slim, bottom-hugging fish of cool, clear, fast-flowing streams. Like its relatives it is a bold little micro-predator built for a life spent working over gravel and stone in well-oxygenated water, and like the great majority of its family it has never entered the aquarium trade and has essentially no husbandry record — what follows is drawn from the original description and the genus's known habits, with the gaps left honestly open rather than guessed at.

Taxonomy & naming

Physoschistura yunnaniloides was formally described in 2011 by Xiao-Yong Chen, Maurice Kottelat and David A. Neely, published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 22, pages 179–183). The type locality lies in the Chindwin River drainage, Sagaing Division, Myanmar, and the description was based on a holotype of 2 in SL and a paratopotype of 2 in SL.

The genus Physoschistura sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, a family that has been repeatedly split and reshuffled as ichthyologists have worked through what was once a much broader "Nemacheilus" or "Noemacheilus". The species epithet, built from "yunnani-" plus the Latin/Greek-style suffix "-oides" (resembling), signals a resemblance to loaches of Yunnan, China, without the species itself being a Yunnan native — the type series comes from Myanmar. As with much of this family, the original description is the primary and, for now, essentially only detailed source on the species; no subsequent conservation assessment or aquarium literature has followed.

Morphology

Physoschistura yunnaniloides is a small, slender nemacheilid loach, with type specimens measuring 2 in SL. The original description distinguishes it from its congeners — with the exception of the closely related P. shanensis — by its complete lateral line, a feature not universal across the genus. Compared to P. shanensis specifically, it is separated by a more pointed snout, 18–20 transverse body bars, fewer branched dorsal-fin rays, fewer branched pectoral-fin rays, a greater pre-pelvic length, a more slender caudal peduncle, a taller dorsal fin, and a shorter pelvic fin.

One unusual anatomical note from the description: P. yunnaniloides lacks a free posterior chamber to the air bladder, a condition not typical for the genus. As a nemacheilid it shares the family's general build — a rounded, only lightly compressed body, small or absent scales over much of the skin, and no erectile suborbital spine (that structure belongs to the botiid loaches, a separate family). The near-scaleless skin common to this family group makes such fish, in general, sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, though no specific husbandry data exists for this species.

Habitat

The type series was collected from the Chindwin River drainage in Sagaing Division, northern Myanmar — a major tributary system of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) basin. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a family are characteristically fish of cool-to-warm, clear, fast-flowing streams and small rivers with gravel, sand or rocky substrates and strong oxygenation, and the genus Physoschistura fits this pattern generally.

Beyond the type locality, no detailed habitat survey or broader distributional data was found in the available sources. This is common for small-bodied Nemacheilidae described from single river systems in Southeast Asia — many are known only from their original collection localities, and the true extent of their range in upland Myanmar streams remains unstudied.

Feeding

No feeding data specific to Physoschistura yunnaniloides was found. Going on the general habits of small nemacheilid stone loaches and related Physoschistura species (such as P. mango and P. shanensis, for which aquarium-trade sources exist), these are bottom-foraging micro-predators that pick small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic prey — from gravel and stone in fast water.

Where related Physoschistura have been kept, they take frozen baby brine shrimp, mini-bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops and small sinking pellets or crushed flake readily. It would be reasonable to expect P. yunnaniloides to behave similarly, but this is inference from the genus rather than a documented fact about the species itself.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Physoschistura yunnaniloides. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches as a family are not known for elaborate courtship; where breeding has been observed in related genera, it typically involves egg-scattering triggered by rising, fast-flowing water rather than pair-bonding or nest preparation. Nothing specific to this species can be stated beyond that general family pattern.

Breeding

Nothing has been recorded about the reproductive biology of Physoschistura yunnaniloides — it has no history in the aquarium trade and no field studies of its spawning have been located. Based on the general pattern for Nemacheilidae, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care.

Stone and brook loaches of this kind are rarely if ever bred in captivity; most species in the family, including this one, are simply too poorly known and too rarely (if ever) collected for the trade for any spawning record to exist. The honest statement for this species is that its breeding biology is undocumented.

In the aquarium

Physoschistura yunnaniloides has no known presence in the aquarium hobby — it does not appear to have been exported or kept, and no care profile exists specific to the species. What can be said comes from the general profile of small Nemacheilidae stone loaches: they do best in cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated, flowing water over a soft sand or fine gravel substrate, and being largely scaleless-skinned, they are sensitive to copper-based and full-strength medications, so any future keeper should treat cautiously and at reduced dose.

Given the total absence of husbandry data, this species should be regarded as unavailable to the hobby rather than as a fish with an established care routine. Anyone encountering it (for instance via scientific collection or a specialist import) should default to conservative stone-loach practice — cool, fast, clean water and small live or frozen invertebrate foods — rather than assume warmer, stiller community-tank conditions.

Conservation

Physoschistura yunnaniloides has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated. No population trend, threat assessment or trade data exists for the species.

It is known only from its type locality in the Chindwin River drainage of Sagaing Division, Myanmar, a region facing general freshwater pressures common across mainland Southeast Asia — including damming, sedimentation and land-use change — but no source documents species-specific threats or population status for P. yunnaniloides. As with many recently described, narrow-range Nemacheilidae, the honest position is that its conservation status is simply unknown pending further survey work.
