Taxonomy & naming
Pteronemacheilus lucidorsum was described by Peter Bohlen and Vendula Ŝlechtová in 2011, in the same paper that erected the genus Pteronemacheilus itself. The genus currently holds just two species, P. lucidorsum and P. meridionalis, both endemic to the Irrawaddy drainage of Myanmar — a small, recently recognised slice of the immense stone-loach radiation. It sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the true stone or brook loaches, which was itself only split out from the older, catch-all Balitoridae/Nemacheilus complex in the early 2000s; much of the family's genus-level taxonomy, including small Southeast Asian genera like this one, has been reshuffled repeatedly as researchers work through what was once lumped into Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus.
The species epithet lucidorsum is built from the Latin lux (light) and dorsum (back), referring to the pale, unpigmented stripe running along the dorsal midline that helps distinguish it from its only congener. As a narrow-range stream endemic described within the last two decades, it has no vernacular name in general use and essentially no presence in the aquarium trade; what is known about it comes from the original description and basic aggregator records rather than a body of hobbyist or ecological literature.
Morphology
This is a small fish even by stone-loach standards, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of about 2 in. Like other Nemacheilidae it has the classic brook-loach build: an elongated, sub-cylindrical body, a small ventral or subterminal mouth ringed with barbels for probing the substrate, and small eyes set high on the head — all features suited to a life spent hugging the bottom of fast water rather than swimming in open midwater. The skin is essentially scaleless or bears only minute, deeply embedded scales, which in this family carries a real practical consequence: sensitivity to copper and to full-strength medication.
The diagnostic feature named in its epithet is a clear, unpigmented stripe running the length of the back, standing out against the mottled body pattern typical of the genus. Males show elongated skinfolds along the dorsal edge of the second and third branched pectoral-fin rays, a form of sexual dimorphism documented in the original description. Beyond that, detailed morphological and colour-pattern data for this species is sparse — it has not been the subject of the kind of close redescription or photographic documentation that better-known aquarium loaches have received.
Habitat
Pteronemacheilus lucidorsum is known from the Nam Paw stream at Hsipaw, in Myanmar's Shan State, part of the greater Irrawaddy river basin. This is classic brook-loach habitat: a small, clear, flowing tropical stream rather than a lake, floodplain or slow lowland river. FishBase records it as demersal and tolerant of moderately soft to hard water with a pH of 6.5 or higher, in warm water around 75 °F or more — consistent with a foothill or mid-elevation stream rather than a still or stagnant one.
As with much of the genus and family, no dedicated ecological survey covers the full extent of its range; it is known essentially from its type locality, and it should be treated as a narrow-range Irrawaddy-basin stream endemic until further surveys say otherwise. That narrow, single-stream distribution pattern is common among Nemacheilidae, many of which are described from one drainage and never surveyed again.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study exists for Pteronemacheilus lucidorsum specifically, but its body plan and habitat place it firmly among the micro-predatory stone loaches: a bottom-hugging fish that forages by probing sand, gravel and leaf litter with its barbels for small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — rather than grazing algae or biofilm. This matches the general pattern for Nemacheilidae in fast, clear streams, where invertebrate prey rather than plant matter dominates the diet.
In the absence of species-specific feeding data, the safe assumption for this genus is a carnivorous micro-predator that would take small live and frozen foods readily and might largely ignore dry flake, in keeping with its wild foraging style.
Mating
There is no published account of courtship or spawning behaviour for Pteronemacheilus lucidorsum. The only dimorphism on record is structural rather than behavioural: males carry elongated skinfolds on the dorsal edge of two of the branched pectoral-fin rays, a feature used to sex the species in the original description but not tied to any documented courtship display or breeding season. Given how little of the genus has been studied beyond its formal description, this is a case where the honest answer is that mating behaviour is simply unknown.
Breeding
Pteronemacheilus lucidorsum has no confirmed history of captive breeding. Data for this species is sparse enough that no aquarium spawning report appears to exist at all. Based on the general pattern for Nemacheilidae stone and brook loaches, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer: eggs released over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward — the same strategy used across the family, in contrast to cave-guarding gobies or mouthbrooding cichlids. Stone loaches of this kind are rarely bred in captivity even where they are established in the hobby, and for a virtually untraded species like this one there is essentially no reason to expect that to change soon.
In the aquarium
Pteronemacheilus lucidorsum is not established in the aquarium trade, and there is no meaningful body of keeper experience to draw on. What can be said follows from its biology and from general stone-loach husbandry: it would need cool-to-warm, clean, well-oxygenated water with a fine gravel or sand substrate and moderate-to-strong flow, reflecting the fast Irrawaddy-basin stream it comes from — not the warm, still water suited to many popular tropical community fish. Its near-scaleless skin means it would be sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, a trait shared across the stone-loach family and one worth flagging even in the absence of direct data for this species.
Given its tiny size (around 2 in) and its habits as a benthic micro-predator, it would be best suited to a species or biotope tank replicating a small, oxygen-rich Southeast Asian hillstream, fed on small live or frozen invertebrate foods, and kept in a group in the manner typical of small social loaches — though, again, none of this is backed by hobbyist reports specific to this species.
Conservation
Pteronemacheilus lucidorsum has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Its known range is limited to a single stream system in the Irrawaddy basin of Shan State, Myanmar, a pattern that, for many similarly narrow-range Nemacheilidae, tends to correlate with real vulnerability to habitat degradation even where no formal assessment exists. No trade or collection pressure is documented for this species, and with no established aquarium demand, its main long-term exposure is likely to be indirect — land-use change, water extraction or pollution within its home drainage — rather than direct exploitation. In the absence of survey data beyond the type locality, its true range and status remain genuinely uncertain.
