Taxonomy & naming
Schistura pawensis was described by Anton Bohlen and Vendula Ŝlechtová in 2013 as one of two new Schistura species from Myanmar, published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters. The name refers to its type locality, the Nam Paw stream. The holotype (ZRC 53776) was collected from that stream at Hsipaw, Shan State, Myanmar, in the Myitnge River drainage, itself a tributary of the Irrawaddy.
It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, and one whose genus-level taxonomy has been repeatedly revised as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart. No historical combination under those older names has been found for this species; it appears to have been described as Schistura from the outset, and the Catalog of Fishes retains it in that genus. As with many recently described Schistura, it is known only from its original description and a handful of taxonomic database entries — there is no meaningful secondary literature to draw on yet.
Morphology
This is an extremely small stone loach: the largest recorded specimen measured only 1 in standard length, making it one of the smallest members of an already small-bodied genus. The body carries a prominent black midlateral stripe running along its length against a silvery-white ventral side, with six to seven weakly marked saddles across the back. Fin ray counts given in the original description are 6½–7½ branched dorsal-fin rays and 7–8 plus 8 branched caudal-fin rays.
Like other Schistura it lacks a suborbital flap, a detail used to separate it from related species in the original description. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are near-scaleless, slender, bottom-hugging fish built for holding position in fast water, and many — this species included where documented — carry the small erectile suborbital spine typical of the wider Cobitoidea, though the fine anatomical detail for S. pawensis specifically has not been elaborated beyond the type description.
Habitat
Schistura pawensis is known only from the Nam Paw stream near Hsipaw, in the Myitnge River drainage of Shan State, Myanmar — a tributary system of the Irrawaddy in northern Myanmar's hill country. No records exist from any other locality, and it should be treated as a single-stream endemic unless further surveys prove otherwise.
The type locality is clear, shallow water only 12–23.5 in deep, flowing moderately fast over a gravel bed — the archetypal habitat of a Nemacheilidae micro-predator. The climate at the site is tropical, but no specific temperature or pH readings were recorded in the sources available. Given the shallow, fast, clear-flowing nature of the habitat, this is very likely a cooler, well-oxygenated stream fish rather than a warm, still-water species, consistent with its Schistura relatives from similar hill streams.
Feeding
No dietary data has been published specifically for Schistura pawensis. As a small benthic Nemacheilidae from fast, clear, gravel-bottomed water, it almost certainly forages as a micro-predator, picking small invertebrates and aquatic insect larvae from among the stones — the standard feeding strategy for stone and brook loaches in this kind of habitat. This should be read as an inference from its relatives and habitat rather than a documented fact.
Mating
No information on sexing, courtship or spawning behaviour has been published for this species. It has never been kept or bred in the aquarium, and no field observations of reproduction are available in the sources consulted. Any account of its mating behaviour would be speculation dressed as fact, so none is offered here.
Breeding
Schistura pawensis has not been recorded breeding in captivity — unsurprising, since it has never entered the aquarium trade at all. Stone and brook loaches in the genus Schistura are, where documented, egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel in fast-flowing water with no parental care, and there is no reason to expect this species to differ. But for S. pawensis itself, the honest position is that breeding biology is simply undocumented; data is sparse to the point of being effectively absent.
In the aquarium
Schistura pawensis has not entered the aquarium trade and there is no husbandry record for it. It should not be sought out or purchased, since no legitimate supply chain for the species exists and any specimen offered for sale could not be reliably identified without expert examination. Were a hillstream-adapted Nemacheilus-type loach of this size ever to become available, general good practice for the genus would still apply: cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a gravel or sand substrate, and the same caution around medications that applies to all scaleless loaches, which absorb treatments readily and are sensitive to copper and full-strength doses. None of this is confirmed for this species specifically — it is offered only as context from its relatives, not as care advice.
Conservation
Schistura pawensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation status. Known from a single stream in Shan State, Myanmar, and never recorded elsewhere, it fits the profile of a narrow-range stream endemic — a category of fish that is often vulnerable to habitat degradation even where no formal assessment yet exists. With no population data, no trend information and no trade pressure (it has never been collected for the aquarium hobby), there is nothing more that can honestly be said about its conservation status beyond flagging the single-locality risk.
