Taxonomy & naming
Schistura vinciguerrae was described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1935, placing it directly in the genus Schistura, where it remains today according to the Catalog of Fishes. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with hundreds of species split across Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus and a scatter of smaller genera, most of them small, drab-patterned fish restricted to individual river systems across Eurasia.
The species epithet vinciguerrae honours Decio Vinciguerra (1856–1934), an Italian physician, naturalist and ichthyologist who served as a curator at the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Genova and worked on collections of Burmese fishes — the same region that produced Hora's type material. GBIF and FishBase both confirm the current combination as valid, with no synonymy complications reported for this species in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
This is a small, slender loach: FishBase lists a maximum of 3 in standard length, while Seriously Fish gives a more typical adult range of 2.5–3 in SL, making it one of the smaller stone loaches in the trade. Like other Nemacheilidae it has a cylindrical, elongated body suited to holding position against strong current, a flattened underside, and small, deeply set eyes.
As in other Cobitoidea, Schistura vinciguerrae carries a small, erectile suborbital spine beneath each eye — a defensive structure typical of the loach group as a whole, though generally less developed and less dangerous than the prominent spines of the larger botiids. Its skin is close to scaleless, a trait shared across the loach families that has direct consequences for how the fish should be handled and medicated in the aquarium.
Habitat
Schistura vinciguerrae lives in small, clear, well-oxygenated streams and minor rivers with pebbly or rocky bottoms, often in forest-shaded headwaters. FishBase specifically notes channels with very swift current running over a largely bare substrate, and Seriously Fish describes coarse sand, gravel and rock as the typical bed material — classic fast-flow stone-loach habitat rather than the sluggish, vegetated water many aquarium fish come from.
Its confirmed range covers the Irrawaddy and Salween river basins in Myanmar and the Chindwin watershed spanning Myanmar and adjacent Manipur, India, with unconfirmed reports from Yunnan Province in China. The type locality is Meekalam, in Myanmar's Tanintharyi Region. This places the species firmly within the Eurasian range typical of the loach superfamily, with no native populations anywhere outside South or Southeast Asia.
Feeding
Seriously Fish describes Schistura vinciguerrae as omnivorous but leaning heavily toward animal matter, foraging over the streambed for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and zooplankton washed along by the current. FishBase's trophic-level estimate of around 3.0 is consistent with a small invertebrate feeder rather than a grazer or detritivore.
In the aquarium it should be offered live or frozen foods daily — Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm are all noted as suitable — to match this natural diet. It will take dried foods, but these should not form the bulk of its diet; a fish built to hunt small live prey in fast water does not thrive on flake alone.
Mating
Little is documented about courtship or pairing behaviour in Schistura vinciguerrae specifically, and no source consulted here describes external sexual dimorphism for the species — this is one of the many data gaps typical of small, single-basin stone loaches that have never been a focus of aquarium breeding programmes. In the wild, spawning is presumed to be tied to the rainy season, when rising, cooling, faster-flowing water likely provides the environmental trigger, mirroring the seasonal cues known to drive spawning across the wider Nemacheilidae and Cobitoidea.
Any attempt to condition or pair this species in the aquarium would need to replicate that seasonal shift — cooler temperatures and stronger flow — but this remains inference from the family's general biology rather than anything specifically recorded for the species.
Breeding
Schistura vinciguerrae is, so far as the sources here record, not known to have been bred in captivity. Seriously Fish states this plainly, and no spawning account or fry-rearing report turned up in any source consulted. Like the great majority of stone and brook loaches, it is an egg-scattering species with no parental care: in nature, eggs are presumably released over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water and left to develop unattended.
Given the lack of any documented captive spawning, the honest picture is that this species is essentially unbred in the hobby. Anyone stocking it should do so to enjoy the fish itself, not with breeding as a realistic goal — a pattern typical of small-range Schistura species that rarely draw the sustained conditioning effort large-scale captive breeding requires.
In the aquarium
Schistura vinciguerrae wants a setup that mimics its home streams: strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, and a substrate of coarse sand, gravel and smooth rock rather than fine mud or heavy planting. Seriously Fish's recorded parameters — 68–79 °F and pH 6.0–7.5 — place it in cooler, faster water than the warm, still tanks many loach-family fish (like the tropical botiids) are kept in; it should not be housed as a warm-blackwater fish, and a powerful filter return or powerhead to generate current is worth the effort.
As with other loaches, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally; half-doses and gentle products are the safer default if disease treatment becomes necessary. Feed it a varied, invertebrate-heavy diet of live and frozen foods rather than relying on flake, and give it plenty of stone and gravel cover to retreat into between forays across the current.
Conservation
FishBase records Schistura vinciguerrae as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2007, with medium resilience (an estimated population doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years). It is not flagged as threatened, and its range spans multiple river basins across Myanmar and into northeast India, which likely buffers it against the single-stream vulnerability that affects many other Schistura.
