Seminemacheilus attalicus was formally described in 2020 by Yoğurtçuoğlu, Kaya, Geiger and Freyhof in a Zootaxa revision of the genus, based on a holotype male of 2.5 in standard length collected from the Kırkgöz drainage in the Antalya basin of Central Anatolia, Turkey. The species epithet references Attalia (modern Antalya), the region of its type locality.
Seminemacheilus is a small genus of stone loaches endemic to Central Anatolia, sitting within the family Nemacheilidae — the largest and most diverse of the loach families, encompassing the many small, mostly scaleless "stone" or "brook" loach genera spread across Eurasia (Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus, Schistura, Triplophysa and others). The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name; as a species described in 2020 it has not been subject to any subsequent revision or synonymy that we can trace. It was diagnosed from its congeners by a slightly emarginate caudal fin, a central pore in the supratemporal canal, and a marbled flank pattern.
