Taxonomy & naming
Seminemacheilus dursunavsari was described by Çiçek in 2020 from the Göksu River drainage in the Eastern Mediterranean basin of Konya Province, Turkey. The name's early history is unusually rocky: it was initially published as a nomen nudum (a name without the formal description needed to make it valid) before being properly republished. Its status was then debated in the taxonomic literature — Yoğurtçuoğlu et al. (2020), in a revision of the genus Seminemacheilus, treated S. dursunavsari as a junior synonym of the previously described S. tubae. That call was reversed two years later: Şahin et al. (2022), in a further Zootaxa revision of the genus, found the opposite relationship and treated S. tubae as a junior synonym of S. dursunavsari instead. The most current treatment therefore recognises S. dursunavsari as the valid name, with S. tubae folded into it.
The genus Seminemacheilus itself sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with hundreds of species distributed across Eurasia from Anatolia to the Himalaya and beyond. Species-level taxonomy in this genus, as in Nemacheilidae generally, has been reshuffled repeatedly as researchers apply molecular tools to what were once distinguished on colour pattern alone; the genetic distances separating S. dursunavsari from its closest relatives (K2P distances of 4.7–5.8% from S. lendlii, S. ispartensis and S. ahmeti) are what ultimately anchor the current species boundaries.
Morphology
Seminemacheilus dursunavsari shows the diagnostic colour pattern used to separate it from its closest congeners: irregular, mottled black spots and blotches scattered across the flanks, fused black spots forming a mark at the base of the caudal fin, and a saddle-like black blotch at the origin of the dorsal fin. Distinctively, the dorsal surface of the head and the ventral part of the body are left bare of blotches and spots — a pattern that, combined with a blunt snout, helps distinguish it from the similarly patterned S. lendlii, S. ispartensis and S. ahmeti, though the species were ultimately confirmed as distinct largely through genetic rather than purely visual means.
Like other members of Nemacheilidae, it almost certainly carries the erectile suborbital spine typical of the broader Cobitoidea and the near-scaleless, delicate skin shared across true loaches — a combination that matters for handling and medication even where a given species' own morphological description does not dwell on it. No specific standard-length or total-length measurements have turned up in the available literature for this species; data on its adult size is sparse, and any figure would be a guess rather than a documented fact.
Habitat

It should not be assumed to guard a cave like a goby or to mouthbrood; those behaviours belong to entirely different fish groups, and nothing in the record suggests S. dursunavsari departs from the scatter-and-abandon strategy typical of its relatives.

Seminemacheilus dursunavsari is not an established aquarium fish — it is a narrow-range Anatolian stream endemic, described only in 2020, with no meaningful hobbyist track record and no verified export history in the sources consulted. Anyone encountering it in a private or research collection should treat the general rules for small nemacheilid stone loaches as the working baseline: cool, clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a sand or fine-gravel substrate, since that is what its native streams provide, and it should not be kept warm and still in the manner of a tropical Southeast Asian loach.
Like other true loaches it is likely near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments; any keeper should default to gentle, reduced-dose approaches rather than standard fish-medication protocols. Given how little is documented about this species specifically, it is best regarded as a fish for specialist or conservation-oriented keeping rather than the general hobby, and any care approach should be treated as provisional pending real observation.
Conservation
Seminemacheilus dursunavsari has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. As a species restricted to small streams within a single river drainage in Central Anatolia, it fits the profile of many recently described Nemacheilidae: a genuinely narrow-range endemic whose conservation exposure — to water abstraction, pollution, damming or habitat alteration in the Göksu drainage — has not yet been formally quantified.
Its taxonomic instability (the repeated synonymy and resurrection relative to S. tubae) is itself a reminder of how incomplete the picture remains for Anatolia's stream-loach fauna; species in this genus are still being described, revised and re-evaluated, and formal conservation assessment for many of them, including this one, has simply not caught up yet.
