Seminemacheilus lendlii was described by Ferdinand Hankó in 1925, part of a wave of early-20th-century taxonomic work on Anatolia's isolated freshwater fish faunas. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, encompassing hundreds of small, mostly scaleless species scattered from Europe and the Middle East across the Himalaya to East and Southeast Asia. The genus Seminemacheilus is a small one, restricted to Anatolia, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority followed here for valid names — lists Seminemacheilus lendlii as the current, accepted combination.
As with much of this family, older literature and databases may still carry variant spellings or historical genus placements from the long process of splitting the old, catch-all Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus into the modern genera (Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus, Seminemacheilus and others).
