Sinibotia reevesae, Reeves' Loach, is a slender botiid from the middle Yangtze River drainage in Sichuan Province, China — a subtly marked, fast-water species that almost never appears in the aquarium trade and whose biology in the wild remains poorly documented. Like every member of the family Botiidae it carries a sharp, erectile suborbital spine below the eye and near-scaleless skin that makes it sensitive to medications; also like its kin it is obligate-social, becoming stressed or aggressive unless kept in a proper group. Small by botiid standards — reaching roughly 3.5–4 in — it favours the kind of clean, well-oxygenated, moderate-current water characteristic of foothill and lowland Chinese river systems, and it has not been bred in aquaria.

Taxonomy & naming

Sinibotia reevesae was originally described by Chang in 1944 under the combination Botia reevesae, placing it in the broad catch-all genus Botia that once housed most of the botiid loaches. The species is now placed in the genus Sinibotia, a group of Chinese botiids that Kottelat and others separated from the wider Botia assemblage in recognition of distinct anatomical and distributional characters; the parentheses around the authority name signal that the original genus of description has changed.

The family Botiidae, to which Sinibotia belongs, was itself separated from Cobitidae (true loaches) in modern classifications — some older literature still lists the species under Cobitidae or uses the wider Botia sense. The genus Sinibotia is restricted to China and contains several other species from the Yangtze and Pearl River systems. Length–weight relationships for this species from the Tuojiang River — a Yangtze tributary — were published by Wen in 2017, suggesting the species ranges more widely through the middle Yangtze drainage than the type locality alone implies.

Morphology

Sinibotia reevesae is a moderately elongate botiid with a slightly arched back and a pointed snout bearing the multiple pairs of barbels characteristic of loaches. It reaches a maximum standard length of about 3.5 in — roughly 3.5 in — making it a small to mid-sized loach comparable in scale to the yoyo loach but considerably smaller than the clown loach. The body is covered in the small, deeply embedded scales typical of the family, giving the skin an almost naked feel and limiting the fish's natural barrier against parasites and medication toxicity.

Below each eye sits the erectile suborbital spine that defines the botiid loaches: a sharp, bifurcated spine that the fish can flick outward as a defence. It is capable of snagging a net or pricking a hand during handling, so moving the fish in a container is safer than lifting it in mesh. The colour pattern — markings, banding and ground colour — is characteristic of the genus, but detailed published descriptions of its specific patterning are limited in the accessible literature.

Habitat

The species is native to the middle Yangtze River drainage in Sichuan Province, China, with the type locality at Luxian County. Records from the Tuojiang River confirm it occupies at least some Yangtze tributaries beyond the type locality. It inhabits clear, clean streams and river channels with moderate to faster current, over sandy and rocky substrates — the kind of well-oxygenated, relatively cool and unpolluted foothill-river environment typical of Chinese botiids in the Sinibotia and Leptobotia groups.

Water parameters recorded across sources point to a subtropical, not tropical, thermal preference: temperatures of 68–78 °F and a pH range of 6.5–8.0 (some sources narrow the pH to 7.0–8.0), with moderate hardness. This is a cooler, faster-water fish than the Southeast Asian botiids of the Mekong or Sundaland, and it should not be kept in the warm, slower conditions that suit the clown loach or the yoyo.

Feeding

Sinibotia reevesae is a benthic predator of invertebrates in the wild, foraging over sandy and rocky river beds for insect larvae, small crustaceans and similar bottom-dwelling prey. It is an omnivore in the broad sense but leans strongly toward live animal food rather than plant matter. Its taste for snails — shared across the botiid loaches — makes it a useful, if uncommonly available, biological control for pest snails in the aquarium.

In captivity it accepts live and frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, chopped shellfish and earthworms, as well as high-quality sinking pellets and wafers that reach the bottom where the fish naturally feeds. Because it is social and may include subordinate individuals in its group hierarchy, feeding should be generous enough that all fish in the group receive adequate rations — a feed after lights-out suits its partially nocturnal foraging habit.

Mating

No mating behaviour has been documented for Sinibotia reevesae in the aquarium, and published wild accounts are sparse. As with other botiids, the breeding season is presumed to be tied to seasonal water-level and temperature fluctuations in the Yangtze drainage — likely a spring or monsoon-season event linked to rising river levels that triggers upstream migration and spawning in shallower, faster-flowing tributary water.

External sexual dimorphism in Sinibotia reevesae is not documented in available sources. In related botiid species, ripe females are generally plumper-bodied when in spawning condition, but reliable secondary sex characters are typically absent or subtle. Determining the sex of individuals in a captive group would be correspondingly difficult.

Breeding

Sinibotia reevesae has not been recorded as breeding in home aquaria. It is a botiid and, like all members of the family, is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: ripe fish release eggs into flowing water, and the adults take no further part in their development. Breeding in nature is presumed to be seasonal and migration-linked, responding to hydrological and thermal cues that cannot readily be reproduced in a home tank.

The commercial aquarium trade in this species is extremely limited — it is described as exceptionally rare in captivity — and there is no known captive breeding programme or hormone-induction protocol for it as there is for the clown loach or other large botiids. A keeper should approach Sinibotia reevesae entirely as a long-term display animal, not as a breeding prospect.

In the aquarium

Sinibotia reevesae is exceptionally rare in the aquarium trade, and little published husbandry experience exists for it. What is documented aligns closely with the general requirements of Chinese botiid loaches. It is obligate-social: a single individual or a pair will be stressed or prone to aggression, and the species should be kept in a group of at least four to five fish, which allows the formation of a natural social hierarchy and normal behaviour. In a group it will be more active and less reclusive, though individuals typically retreat to quieter areas of the tank when not feeding.

The water must be clean, well-oxygenated and moderately flowing — this is not a fish for a still, warm tropical community tank. Temperature should be kept in the 68–77 °F range, making it compatible with subtropical rather than tropical setups; it tolerates up to about 78 °F but should not be kept warmer than that. The aquarium should have a sandy or fine-gravel substrate with rock and wood for cover, and filtration strong enough to maintain good oxygen levels and zero organic waste accumulation — the species is reportedly intolerant of poor water quality and requires regular (30–50% weekly) water changes.

Like all botiids, it is near-scaleless and sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many standard treatments. At the same time, scaleless loaches are often among the first fish in a tank to show ich outbreaks. Medications should be used at half-dose or with products labelled safe for scaleless fish, and the tank should be monitored carefully for early signs of disease. Given its rarity and the near-absence of captive-breeding stock, any specimens that enter the trade are almost certainly wild-collected from Chinese river systems.

Conservation

Sinibotia reevesae has not been formally assessed by the IUCN and carries no Red List category. Its known range is centred on the middle Yangtze River drainage in Sichuan Province, with records from the Tuojiang River indicating a somewhat broader distribution than the Luxian County type locality alone, but it remains an uncommonly collected species with a restricted overall range.

The Yangtze River basin faces significant environmental pressures — dam construction, water abstraction, sedimentation, pollution from agriculture and industry, and the alteration of natural flood regimes — that affect clean-water stream and river specialists such as botiid loaches. Without a formal assessment it is not possible to characterise the conservation status of this species precisely, but its apparent rarity in collections and the pressures on its watershed make it a candidate for evaluation. The aquarium trade demand for this species is negligible given its near-complete absence from the hobby, so collecting pressure is not a known concern; habitat degradation is the more plausible risk.
