Taxonomy & naming
Sinibotia zebra was described by the Chinese ichthyologist Wu Xianwen in 1939, originally placed in a broader loach genus; the parentheses around the authority name signal that the species has since been moved to its current genus. It belongs to the family Botiidae, the botiid loaches, which also includes the well-known genera Botia, Yasuhikotakia, Syncrossus, Ambastaia and Chromobotia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name, which stands as Sinibotia zebra.
The genus Sinibotia is a group of medium-sized botiid loaches restricted to southern China. Within the genus, Sinibotia zebra is distinguished by its bold zebra-stripe pattern; it may occasionally appear in trade under the informal label "Chinese zebra loach" to distinguish it from unrelated banded loaches. Older literature may list it under a synonym; the current combination Sinibotia zebra is accepted by FishBase and GBIF.
Morphology
Sinibotia zebra reaches around 5.5 in standard length at maximum — a medium-sized loach by botiid standards. The body is elongate and laterally compressed in the typical botiid fashion, with a slightly arched back, a pointed snout, and a subterminal mouth equipped with several pairs of barbels for probing the substrate. The common name references its pattern: alternating dark and pale vertical bars or stripes run along the flanks, giving the fish the zebra-like banding that distinguishes it in a display tank.
Like all botiids, Sinibotia zebra carries an erectile suborbital spine — a sharp, forked spine housed in a groove beneath each eye that the fish can flick outward defensively. These spines snag nets effectively and can nick an unwary hand, so the fish is best transferred in a container rather than a net. The body is covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin effectively smooth and near-scaleless to the touch, a feature with direct consequences for disease treatment.
Habitat
Sinibotia zebra is native to southern China, within the range of the Sinibotia genus which is confined to that region. It inhabits clean, temperate freshwater rivers and streams — the kinds of hill and foothill drainages of Yunnan and Guangxi that carry well-oxygenated, relatively cool water over rocky or sandy substrate. Unlike the warm-water botiids of Southeast Asia's lowland rivers, Sinibotia and its genus-mates are subtropical species adapted to temperatures in roughly the 72–79 °F range, and they do not thrive if kept too warm.
The preferred habitat is likely flowing or moderately flowing water with good oxygenation, clean conditions, and structure in the form of rocks, coarse gravel and woody debris. This is not a brackish or still-water species. In the aquarium the habitat demands translate to a well-filtered, oxygen-rich tank with some flow, cooler temperatures than most community setups, and a soft to medium-hard substrate over which a group can forage.
Feeding
Sinibotia zebra is an omnivore with a strong inclination toward small invertebrates, as is typical of botiid loaches. In the wild it almost certainly forages across the substrate for insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and molluscs, supplemented by organic detritus and occasional plant material. Its appetite for snails — a trait shared across the botiid family — gives it genuine practical value as a pest-snail control in aquaria where bladder or ramshorn snails have proliferated.
In the aquarium it is not a fussy feeder. Sinking pellets and wafers, frozen foods such as bloodworm and daphnia, and live foods are all accepted. Blanched vegetables and some plant-based content round out the diet. Because Sinibotia zebra is a group-living fish with a social hierarchy, the keeper should feed generously enough that lower-ranking individuals get their share; a feed after lights-out suits the fish's partly nocturnal foraging habit and ensures the shyer members of the group are not outcompeted.
Mating
Sexing Sinibotia zebra is not straightforward. As in most botiids, there is no reliable, consistent external dimorphism between males and females. Mature females in spawning condition may appear somewhat deeper-bodied than males, but this difference is subtle and only apparent in well-fed adults. The absence of clear secondary sexual characters, combined with the fish's subtropical habits and likely dependence on seasonal environmental cues, makes controlled pairing in the aquarium extremely difficult.
In the wild, breeding is almost certainly tied to seasonal patterns — changes in water temperature, flow rate, and possibly water chemistry associated with the onset of the monsoon or spring snowmelt — that trigger migration to spawning grounds in shallower or faster-flowing waters. Reproducing those cues in a static home aquarium is not feasible for most keepers.
Breeding
Breeding Sinibotia zebra in the home aquarium is essentially unrecorded. It is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: ripe fish release eggs into flowing water, and neither parent tends the spawn or fry. FishBase lists no breeding data for this species, and the aquarium literature contains no verified accounts of home spawning.
Commercial production of botiid loaches, where it exists, relies on hormone induction — brood fish are injected to bring them into spawning condition under farm conditions that approximate seasonal triggers, and the fry are reared in outdoor ponds. This is the honest picture for the genus and family: these loaches are not aquarium-bred by hobbyists, and a keeper should buy Sinibotia zebra to enjoy and study, not to propagate.
In the aquarium
The most important rule for keeping Sinibotia zebra is to acquire a proper group. Like all botiid loaches it is obligate-social: kept singly or in pairs it becomes skittish, reclusive or — in some cases — a bully toward tankmates. A group of five or more allows the fish to establish a natural hierarchy, explore their environment confidently, and engage in the social behaviours — including audible clicks made with the pharyngeal teeth — that characterise a well-settled botiid shoal. A tank of at least 35.5–47 in provides adequate swimming space for a group of adults at 5.5 in.
Temperature is the next critical variable: Sinibotia zebra is a subtropical Chinese river fish, not a warm-water tropical, and it keeps best at 72–79 °F. Pushing the temperature into the 82–86 °F range that suits many community fish will stress this species over time. Clean, well-oxygenated, moderately flowing water, a soft substrate, and rock or wood structure for shelter complete the setup.
Being near-scaleless, the fish is sensitive to copper-based and other harsh medications. It is also, like many loaches, prone to white spot (Ich), so it is often one of the first fish in a tank to show symptoms. Treat with a loach-safe product at reduced dosage — half-strength as a starting point — and maintain meticulous water quality, since this species does not tolerate accumulated waste. Tankmates should be peaceful fish that share the cooler temperature preference.
Conservation
Sinibotia zebra is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient (assessed January 2011), reflecting a lack of adequate population and distribution data to determine its conservation status. The species is confined to southern China — a region where freshwater biodiversity faces pressure from river modification, water abstraction, pollution, and the damming of hill and foothill drainages for hydroelectric projects. Several Chinese endemic loaches with restricted ranges are considered at risk from these factors, though without survey data it is not possible to confirm the status of Sinibotia zebra itself.
Specimens do appear occasionally in the specialist loach trade, but the species is not common in shops and the scale of any wild collection pressure is unclear. The Data Deficient assessment is best read as a call for survey work rather than as a confirmation of safety: a restricted Chinese endemic in modified river systems deserves monitoring until baseline population data are available.
