Taxonomy & naming
Sinogastromyzon daduheensis was described by Guo and Yang in 2013, with the type locality given as the Dadu River, Sichuan Province, in the upper Yangtze basin of south-west China. The description was published in Acta Zootaxonomica Sinica, the Chinese journal of systematic zoology.
The genus Sinogastromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae (also written Balitoridae or Homalopteridae in older texts), the mountain or hillstream loaches of order Cypriniformes. The genus is distributed across southern China, Taiwan, northern Vietnam and Laos, and all its members share the diagnostic ventral suction-disc formed by the overlapping pectoral and pelvic fins — an adaptation to fast-water rheophilic habitats. No subspecies or synonyms have been published for S. daduheensis, which was only described a decade ago and remains poorly known outside China.
Morphology
Sinogastromyzon daduheensis is a small, strongly dorsoventrally flattened fish. Like other torrent loaches in the genus, it has a broad, shield-shaped head, a streamlined profile, and paired pectoral and pelvic fins that spread horizontally and merge into a functional suction disc on the ventral surface, held against rock by negative pressure in fast current. The brachial region carries several rows of papillae, reported for the genus as seven to eight rows, that assist in adhesion and likely in respiratory gas exchange in the thin film of water at the rock surface.
The body covering is reduced to minute, partly embedded scales, making the skin feel near-naked — a feature shared across Balitoridae that has direct implications for disease treatment and water-quality sensitivity. Adult size is not precisely documented in the literature for this species; congeners from the Dadu and neighbouring river systems in Sichuan typically reach 2–4 in in standard length, and S. daduheensis is expected to fall in that range. The suborbital spine characteristic of botiid loaches is not present in Balitoridae; the family relies instead on its morphological adaptations and substrate-clinging reflex for defence.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Dadu River system, a major tributary of the upper Yangtze basin draining the high-relief terrain of western Sichuan. The Dadu rises from the Tibetan Plateau and descends steeply through gorges and river terraces before joining the Min River near Leshan. S. daduheensis occupies the faster-flowing sections of this drainage: riffles, runs and rocky rapids with well-oxygenated, cool to temperate water running over cobblestone, gravel and exposed bedrock.
This is a rheophilic specialist — it needs high water velocity, high dissolved oxygen, clear water and a hard substrate to adhere to and graze from. It is not a warm-tropical fish; the Dadu at mid-elevations runs at roughly 64–81 °F (64–81 °F) across the seasons, considerably cooler than the water temperatures of the lowland tropics. The habitat is free of the fine silts and nutrient loads of lowland rivers, and there is little tolerance for poor water quality or elevated temperatures in a fish shaped entirely by selection in clean, oxygenated mountain water.
Feeding
Sinogastromyzon daduheensis is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In the wild it rasps algae, diatoms, periphyton and the associated micro-invertebrates from the surfaces of submerged rocks, working the exposed face of boulders and cobblestones in the current. This feeding mode defines the fish's requirements in captivity more than almost any other biological trait.
In the aquarium, S. daduheensis will starve in a newly established or bare-glass tank — this is the commonest way hillstream loaches are killed in the hobby. It needs a mature, algae-covered rockscape that has been running for months under strong lighting before the fish is introduced. Once that biofilm is established, the diet can be supplemented with small frozen foods (bloodworm, Mysis shrimp, Artemia), blanched courgette or spinach, and commercial algae wafers and spirulina discs. The fish should be fed daily, with the emphasis always on having enough live biofilm surface available. An understocked rock pile and strong lighting of eight or more hours per day are as important as any food offered.
Mating
Very little is documented specifically for S. daduheensis, and hobbyist records of captive mating in the genus Sinogastromyzon are sparse. For the genus more broadly, males and females are superficially similar; females in breeding condition are typically plumper in the abdomen, and some keepers report slight differences in the profile of the head and the width of the disc, but reliable sexing in a community setting is difficult. Spawning in related species and in genera such as Sewellia is associated with strong lighting, good water quality, and regular large water changes that simulate the seasonal increase in flow and oxygen common to mountain streams in spring and early summer.
Courtship, where observed in related hillstream loaches, involves the male actively pursuing and pressing against the female, often performing lateral displays on the substrate. In aquarium accounts of hillstream loach spawning, mating appears to occur on or close to the substrate, after which eggs are released into the water column or deposited directly among stones.
Breeding
Sinogastromyzon daduheensis has not been commonly bred in home aquaria, and specific records for the species are absent from the published literature. The genus belongs to the broader hillstream loach group for which aquarium breeding is occasionally reported — most notably for Sewellia lineolata — but is still the exception rather than the rule. For most Sinogastromyzon species the honest answer is that they are rarely or never bred in captivity.
The breeding mode in Sinogastromyzon follows a Strategy I open-water pattern: eggs are released into the water column during or immediately after courtship, with the sticky eggs drifting or rolling to lodge in crevices and between stones in the current. There is no parental care; adults take no interest in eggs or fry. In well-conditioned groups maintained with strong flow, high oxygen, mature biofilm, intense lighting and regular large water changes, spawning may occur spontaneously, though raising fry is a further challenge given their dependence on microscopic biofilm as a first food. A group of six or more individuals kept in appropriate conditions represents the best chance of observing spawning behaviour.
In the aquarium
Sinogastromyzon daduheensis presents real demands that make it unsuitable for the general community tank. The three conditions it cannot survive without are cool temperatures, high dissolved oxygen, and a mature biofilm surface. A warm, still aquarium at 79–82 °F with a gentle internal filter will stress or kill the fish within weeks; it wants water in the 64–75 °F range, ideally with a powerful powerhead or spray bar creating a vigorous, turbulent current across the rockscape.
Because the skin is near-scaleless, S. daduheensis absorbs dissolved substances readily and is sensitive to elevated nitrates, copper-based medications and full-dose treatments with many common aquarium chemicals. The tank should be mature and well-cycled before the fish is added; water changes must be regular and substantial. Because this species is highly social and is found in groups in the wild, a group of six or more is recommended — isolated individuals show reduced activity and fail to thrive.
The aquascape should prioritise smooth, dense river-cobble rockwork covering most of the floor and rising up the glass, lit intensely enough to sustain a visible coating of green and brown algae. Sand can fill gaps between stones. Subdued planting is acceptable but secondary. If these conditions are met — cool, fast, oxygenated, mature, and biofilm-rich — S. daduheensis is a lively, interesting fish that will graze actively in open current during the day. If they are not met, it declines slowly and is difficult to rescue.
Conservation
Sinogastromyzon daduheensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. Given its very recent description in 2013 and its apparently restricted range within the Dadu River system in Sichuan, it has not yet been subject to a formal assessment; we record it here as Not Evaluated (NE) rather than assign a status that has not been formally determined.
The Dadu River and its upper tributaries face pressures from hydroelectric development — the river system is heavily dammed along its course through the Sichuan basin — as well as from land-use change, siltation, and agricultural runoff in the catchment. Narrow-range stream endemics in the upper Yangtze tributaries of China are among the freshwater fish groups most exposed to dam construction, which fragments populations, alters flow regimes and changes the temperature and oxygen profile of the water downstream. Whether S. daduheensis is collected for the aquarium trade is not documented; if so, it would likely be wild-caught, as no captive breeding programme is known for the species. The genus Sinogastromyzon includes at least one species assessed as Vulnerable (S. puliensis), and given the narrow distribution of S. daduheensis a precautionary view of its conservation status would be prudent.
