Sinogastromyzon hsiashiensis is a small, dorso-ventrally flattened hillstream loach from the fast, clear streams of Jiangxi Province in southern China, first described by P. W. Fang in 1931 from the Ganzhou region. Like all members of the genus it is a highly specialised rheophile — its entire body plan is an engineering solution to life on exposed rock in rushing, oxygen-rich torrent water. Adults reach roughly 1–2 in and spend their lives rasping biofilm and aufwuchs from boulders in cool, clear hill streams. In the aquarium it is a challenging, specialist fish that demands cold, fast, heavily aerated water and a mature, algae-covered rockscape; it starves in a bare or newly-set-up tank and suffocates in warm, still conditions. Data on this species are sparse in both the scientific and hobbyist literature, and it is rarely encountered in the trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Sinogastromyzon hsiashiensis was described by the Chinese ichthyologist P. W. Fang in 1931 from specimens collected at Ganzhou (then romanised as Hsiaship or Hsiashi), Jiangxi Province, southern China — the specific epithet commemorates that type locality. The genus name Sinogastromyzon combines the Latin Sino- (Chinese) with the Greek gaster (belly) and myzon (sucking), reflecting the genus's Chinese range and the sucker-like ventral morphology shared by all its members.

Sinogastromyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae (hillstream loaches), the highly flattened rheophilic loaches of South and East Asian torrents. The genus contains a small number of species endemic to southern China, all of them poorly documented in Western literature. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid nomenclature; the combination Sinogastromyzon hsiashiensis Fang, 1931 is currently listed as valid. No synonyms are documented in the available literature, and no subsequent revisions have moved the species to another genus.

Morphology

Like all Sinogastromyzon, S. hsiashiensis is extremely flattened from top to bottom. The head and paired fins are spread horizontally, and the broad, smooth ventral surface acts as an adhesive pad that holds the fish against rock in fast current. The pectoral and pelvic fins are enlarged and extended laterally, and the body profile in side view is strongly depressed — the fish is essentially a living tile. Adult size is roughly 1–2 in in standard length, making it one of the smaller hillstream loaches.

The skin is almost scaleless to the touch, with very small, deeply embedded scales on most of the body — a trait shared by balitorid hillstream loaches that matters medically, as it increases absorption of dissolved treatments. The mouth is inferior and adapted for scraping: thick, fleshy lips armed with fine teeth or rasping pads rasp biofilm and diatoms off rock surfaces. Coloration is typically cryptic: brownish or olive above with darker mottling that blends with the boulder and gravel substrate of its native streams. A sharp suborbital spine, characteristic of many loach lineages, may be present in this family; the specific condition in Sinogastromyzon is not fully documented in available sources, and precise fin-ray or scale counts for this species are not confirmed in the cache.

Habitat

Sinogastromyzon hsiashiensis is endemic to southern China, known from Jiangxi Province with the type locality at Ganzhou, in the drainage of the Gan River, a major tributary of Poyang Lake and ultimately the Yangtze system. Its native habitat is fast-flowing, clear, oxygen-rich hill streams and torrents over rocky, bouldery substrates at low to moderate elevation.

These streams are cool — temperatures in the Jiangxi hill country range from around 57–72 °F across the year, with the warmest months in summer and distinctly cool winters. Dissolved oxygen is very high due to constant turbulence. Water is typically clean and of moderate to low conductivity. The fish clings to exposed rock faces and boulders in the full current, where it grazes the biofilm of algae, diatoms and organic matter that coats the stone. It is a strict freshwater species with no tolerance for brackish or stagnant conditions.

Feeding

Sinogastromyzon hsiashiensis is an aufwuchs grazer — its inferior, rasping mouth is designed to scrape biofilm, diatoms, algae and fine organic matter from the surface of rock. In its native streams it feeds continuously on the thin but productive biofilm that coats boulders in turbulent water. This is not a generalist feeder; it is a specialist that depends on a stable, well-established biofilm layer for its nutritional needs.

In the aquarium this dependency is the chief challenge. The fish starves in a bare or newly-set-up tank that lacks a mature algae and biofilm coating on rocks and glass — the commonest way this and related species are killed. A successful keeper must allow the tank to mature for weeks to months before introducing the fish, ensure rocks and substrate surfaces are well colonised, and supplement with blanched greens (courgette, spinach, cucumber), algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking foods. Small frozen foods such as baby brineshrimp or micro-worm may be accepted but biofilm and plant matter form the dietary core. Overfeeding with protein-rich foods without adequate grazing surface leads to poor condition and health problems.

Mating

Very little is documented about reproductive behaviour in Sinogastromyzon hsiashiensis specifically. As with most hillstream loaches, sexing is difficult from external appearance alone; females may be fuller-bodied when in breeding condition, but the sexes otherwise appear very similar. In related hillstream genera, males occasionally develop fine tubercles (breeding nuptial tubercles) on the snout or head during the breeding season, but this is not confirmed for this species in available sources.

In the wild, spawning in hillstream loaches of this type is likely tied to seasonal changes in flow and temperature — possibly triggered by the transition between the cool, lower-flow winter period and the warmer, higher-flow conditions of spring or the monsoon. No spawning behaviour has been described for this species in the scientific or hobbyist literature available.

Breeding

Sinogastromyzon hsiashiensis has not been bred in home aquaria in any documented account, and it is rarely or never available in the trade, so breeding attempts are essentially unknown. The general pattern for hillstream loaches in the family Balitoridae is that a small number of species — notably Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam — have been successfully spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river-style aquaria, dropping adhesive eggs among stones and fine gravel with no parental care and no guarding of the nest. Most hillstream genera, however, have no verified aquarium spawning on record.

For S. hsiashiensis in particular, data are sparse. The species would be expected to be an egg-scatterer among rocks and gravel in fast water with no parental care, following the hillstream balitorid pattern. Any attempt to breed the species in an aquarium would require a large, mature, strongly-flowing tank with a deep substrate of fine gravel and cobble, cool temperatures, high oxygenation, and excellent water quality — and even then success cannot be expected or predicted from current knowledge.

In the aquarium

Sinogastromyzon hsiashiensis is a specialist fish suited to an experienced keeper willing to provide a dedicated hillstream river tank. The most important requirements are cool water (ideally 61–72 °F), very strong water flow from powerful powerheads or a river-manifold circulation system, and very high dissolved oxygen — these are non-negotiable. Warm, still or sluggishly filtered water leads to rapid decline through oxygen deficiency and thermal stress. A chiller or unheated tank in a cool room is typically necessary in temperate climates.

The tank must be mature: rock surfaces, glass, and substrate need a well-established coating of algae and biofilm before the fish is introduced, and that layer must be maintained. Smooth, flat stones angled into the current give the fish surfaces to rasp and rest on. A sand or fine gravel base suits the natural habitat. The tank should be densely oxygenated and the flow strong enough that the fish uses its sucker-belly to hold position — a flow rate that would be excessive for most community fish is correct for a hillstream loach.

Being near-scaleless, this species absorbs dissolved medications readily and is sensitive to copper and full-strength treatments. It should never share a tank with copper-based medications or standard ich treatments at full dose. Because it is a cool-water specialist, it cannot be kept with warm-water community fish. Compatible tankmates are limited to other cool-water hillstream loaches or rheophilic species with matching temperature and flow requirements. Group size is not documented; keeping a small group of three to six individuals is reasonable for social security, but social dynamics in this genus are not well described.

Conservation

Sinogastromyzon hsiashiensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. The species is a restricted-range endemic known from Jiangxi Province, southern China, and the available data are insufficient to assign even a Data Deficient category with confidence.

As a specialist of clean, fast-flowing hill streams, this species is inherently vulnerable to any deterioration of its native watercourses. Land-use change, siltation from agriculture and construction, and the damming or diversion of small tributaries are the primary threats to rheophilic hillstream fauna across southern China. Because it is not established in the aquarium trade and data are sparse, the impact of collection on wild populations is unknown. The scarcity of scientific data makes any conservation assessment difficult, and this species would benefit from targeted survey work and formal IUCN evaluation.
