Taxonomy & naming
Sinogastromyzon hexaocellum was described by the Vietnamese ichthyologist T. P. Nguyen in 2005, placing it in the genus Sinogastromyzon — a group of hillstream loaches (family Balitoridae) distributed across Vietnam and southern China. The genus name combines the Latin sino- (Chinese) with the Greek gaster (belly) and myzon (sucking), together reading as the Chinese belly-sucker, a reference to the ventral suction apparatus formed by the pectoral and pelvic fins. The species epithet hexaocellum derives from the Greek hex (six) and ocellus (little eye or eye-spot), referring to the pattern of six distinct ocellate spots on the body that distinguishes this species from its congeners.
The family Balitoridae (river loaches or hillstream loaches) holds the most hydraulically specialised loaches — flattened rheophiles adapted for life on rock in fast water. Sinogastromyzon is one of several closely related genera in this group; the genus has been revised repeatedly as molecular and morphological work has refined relationships within the family. The Catalog of Fishes recognises the combination Sinogastromyzon hexaocellum (Nguyen, 2005) as valid.
Morphology
The body is markedly depressed — flattened top-to-bottom rather than laterally compressed — with a broad, rounded head, a horizontal belly, and a streamlined profile that minimises the hydrodynamic drag of fast current. The pectoral and pelvic fins are spread wide and lie flat against the substrate, forming together with the ventral body surface a suction disc that anchors the fish to rock even in strong flow. This is the defining adaptation of the hillstream loach lineage and is expressed fully in Sinogastromyzon.
The body is covered in fine scales but the skin appears nearly smooth to the touch, and the fish lacks the erectile suborbital spine of the botiid and cobitid loaches. Colouring follows the genus pattern: a pale tan to buff ground colour overlaid with dark mottling, and — as the species name records — six distinct ocellate spots arranged in two rows of three along the dorsal and lateral surfaces, which help break up the fish's outline against patterned rock. Adult size is modest; the species is unlikely to exceed 3 in in standard length, with most aquarium specimens smaller.
Fins are well developed: the dorsal and caudal are used for adjusting position in current, while the pectorals and pelvics function primarily as attachment organs rather than propulsive surfaces. The mouth is adapted for rasping rather than grasping — the lips are fleshy and papillose, suited for working the surface of a rock.
Habitat
Sinogastromyzon hexaocellum inhabits the fast-flowing, shallow, highly oxygenated upland streams of Vietnam. These are clear, cool hill and mountain torrents that run over bare rock and pebble; the water is typically low in dissolved solids, slightly acidic to neutral, and saturated with dissolved oxygen from constant turbulence. Water temperature in the streams where the genus occurs ranges roughly 61–75 °F, significantly cooler than the lowland rivers often pictured in the aquarium trade.
The species is strictly rheophilic — a creature of current, not of still water. The surfaces it clings to are colonised by dense mats of diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria and associated microfauna collectively called aufwuchs or biofilm; this biological coating on rock is the primary food and the ecological backdrop that makes these streams habitable for the fish. Remove the flow and the biofilm degrades; warm the water and oxygen levels drop while metabolic demand rises — both routes lead quickly to the same outcome for the fish.
Feeding
Sinogastromyzon hexaocellum is a dedicated aufwuchs grazer. In the wild it rasps algae, diatoms, biofilm and the microfauna embedded within them from rock surfaces using its papillose lips, moving systematically across exposed stone in the current. It is not an opportunistic feeder on drifting invertebrates or plant matter in any significant sense — the biofilm matrix is the axis of its nutrition.
In the aquarium this translates to a hard requirement for a mature, well-established tank. A tank set up within the past few months will not yet carry enough biofilm to sustain the fish regardless of how much prepared food is offered; hillstream loaches that starve in new tanks are consuming offered pellets or wafers but perishing because those calories are not sufficient to compensate for the absence of live biofilm. A mature tank with algae-coated rocks, smooth river stones and some slate or glass panels exposed to light produces the continuous biofilm surface these fish need.
Supplementary feeding should centre on sinking algae wafers and spirulina-based discs, blanched vegetables (courgette, spinach, cucumber), and small frozen foods such as daphnia or cyclops. A varied diet covering both the algal and proteinous components of their natural aufwuchs diet keeps condition and colour best. Feeds two or three times a day in a tank where the biofilm base is well established.
Mating
Virtually nothing is recorded in the primary literature or the hobby about the reproductive behaviour of Sinogastromyzon hexaocellum specifically. From what is known of the genus and the hillstream loach family more broadly, sex differences are subtle or absent externally; mature females may be somewhat fuller-bodied when in breeding condition, but distinguishing sexes in a mixed group is not reliably possible without close inspection.
In related hillstream loaches where spawning has been observed — most notably Sewellia lineolata — males establish small territories on rock surfaces and display to females with spread fins. Courtship appears to involve the male pressing close to the female and the pair orienting side by side near a rocky spawning site. Whether Sinogastromyzon hexaocellum follows a similar pattern is unknown; the ecology of the genus suggests it would, but documented observations of this species are absent from the accessible literature.
Breeding
Sinogastromyzon hexaocellum is not reliably bred in home aquaria, and no verified spawning accounts for this species appear in the hobby literature. Like other hillstream loaches it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that deposits eggs among and between rocks in fast water, with no parental care after spawning. The eggs are likely adhesive and small, left to develop among the substrate while the current brings them oxygen.
A small number of hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata from related habitat in Vietnam — have been spawned in mature, strongly flowing river tanks. Whether Sinogastromyzon hexaocellum could be induced to spawn in similar conditions is possible but undemonstrated. Any attempt would require a very mature tank with heavy biofilm, high flow, excellent oxygenation, and cool water; the trigger for ripening in wild hill-stream species is thought to involve seasonal temperature and flow variation. The honest position is that this species, like most of its family, should be kept for its own interest — not with the expectation of breeding.
In the aquarium
Sinogastromyzon hexaocellum is a specialist fish that rewards preparation. The three points that matter most are temperature, flow and biofilm maturity. Temperature should be kept in the 64–75 °F range; anything consistently above 79 °F risks oxygen depletion and metabolic stress. Flow must be strong — multiple powerheads or a wavemaker delivering at least 10–15 times the tank volume per hour is the target, with return pipes aimed to create visible surface turbulence and subsurface current over the rock layout. Dissolved oxygen must be high; an airstone in addition to the mechanical filtration helps on warm days.
The tank should be set up and run for several months before introducing these fish, allowing a dense, visible biofilm and algae coating to develop on smooth rocks, slate and glass. Decor is best arranged as a series of flat stones and angled slabs that create current shadows and exposed surfaces the fish can work over, mimicking the varied hydrodynamics of a torrent stream. The substrate can be fine gravel or smooth pebbles; sand is tolerated but strong flow will keep it moving.
Sinogastromyzon hexaocellum is docile and will not trouble tankmates, but its specialised requirements make it a poor candidate for a general community tank. Appropriate companions, if kept at all, are other cool-water hillstream species with similar flow and temperature needs. The fish is sensitive to deteriorating water quality — ammonia and nitrite must be zero and nitrate kept low with regular water changes. It lacks the botiid suborbital spine and is not the kind of fish prone to netting injuries, but being effectively scaleless it should be considered potentially sensitive to copper-based medications, which should be used at half strength or avoided in favour of alternatives.
Conservation
Sinogastromyzon hexaocellum has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries the designation Not Evaluated (NE). The species is endemic to upland stream habitat in Vietnam, a country that holds a remarkable diversity of hillstream loach species, many of them range-restricted stream endemics whose distribution spans only a single watershed or a handful of connected tributaries.
Such endemics are inherently vulnerable: a species confined to a few kilometres of stream habitat is exposed to the full impact of any local change — dam construction, water abstraction, deforestation of riparian zones, agricultural runoff, and the collection pressure of the ornamental fish trade. Vietnam's upland streams have experienced increasing pressure from all of these over recent decades. Without a formal assessment it is not possible to assign a threat category with confidence, but the narrow endemism of the genus and the documented degradation of upland stream habitats in the region suggest that data deficiency rather than genuine security underlies the NE status. The species appears occasionally in the specialist hobby trade, supplied almost entirely by wild collection, which makes data on population trends in source streams difficult to obtain and all the more necessary.
