Taxonomy & naming
Sinogastromyzon dezeensis was described in 1999 by Li, Mao and Lu, with the type locality in the Deze area of Yunnan Province, China — the species epithet directly commemorates that locality. It is placed in the genus Sinogastromyzon, a group of small, highly flattened balitorid loaches endemic to China and neighbouring regions of Southeast Asia. The family Balitoridae (hillstream loaches, or torrent loaches) sits within the order Cypriniformes alongside the carps and minnows.
Sinogastromyzon is one of several hillstream genera in southern China and Indochina — others include Gastromyzon (Borneo), Sewellia (Vietnam/Laos) and Pseudogastromyzon (South China) — but Sinogastromyzon is confined to mainland China. The genus has been subject to periodic revision as molecular and morphological studies resolve the relationships among balitorid genera, and keepers should be aware that the classification of Chinese hillstream loaches is still actively researched. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) is the authority for the current valid name; as of this writing, Sinogastromyzon dezeensis remains a valid species in that genus.
Morphology
The body of Sinogastromyzon dezeensis is broad and strongly depressed — flattened from top to bottom into a disc-like profile that is the hallmark of a fish designed for life on fast-flowing rock surfaces. The head is wide, the snout rounded, and the paired pectoral and pelvic fins spread horizontally to form a broad, low platform that, together with the flattened belly, creates the suction effect that pins the fish against current-scoured stone. The fish reaches approximately 2 in in standard length.
The skin is effectively scaleless at first glance — the scales are tiny, deeply embedded, and sparse, leaving the body feeling nearly naked to the touch. This, combined with the gill morphology adapted for oxygen extraction in fast, well-aerated water, makes the species acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and poor water quality. The mouth is inferior and modified for rasping, equipped with fleshy lips that grip the substrate while the fish scrapes biofilm and diatoms from rock surfaces. Colouration follows the typical hillstream loach pattern: a mottled brown and cream ground colour that provides camouflage against stream cobble and pebble.
Habitat
Sinogastromyzon dezeensis is endemic to Yunnan Province, China, where it inhabits the fast-flowing, rocky headwater streams and hill torrents of the region. The Deze area, from which the species takes its name, is characterised by swift, clear, cool water running over beds of smooth pebble, cobble and bedrock, with minimal fine sediment and abundant attached algae and biofilm on every exposed rock face. Dissolved oxygen is high throughout — the fish is a rheophile, an obligate lover of fast water, and it cannot survive where oxygen drops.
Water conditions in these streams are cool to cold, with temperatures fluctuating seasonally but generally well below the warm-tropical range associated with many other aquarium fish. The substrate provides the fish's entire food base: a near-continuous coat of diatoms, filamentous algae and bacterial biofilm that the fish grazes constantly throughout the day. Such habitats are clean and unsilted — sedimentation from land disturbance is a direct threat, smothering both the rocky substrate and the biofilm layers on which the fish depends.
Feeding
Sinogastromyzon dezeensis is a specialised biofilm and algae grazer — an aufwuchs feeder in the strict sense. In the wild it spends most of its waking hours moving across rock surfaces, rasping diatoms, filamentous algae, bacterial biofilm and fine detritus with its fleshy, modified lips. It is not a meal-feeder but a near-continuous browser, consuming small amounts at a near-constant rate as it patrols its territory.
In the aquarium, this feeding strategy has a critical implication: the tank must be mature enough — and brightly lit enough — to carry a thick, established coat of algae and biofilm on the rockwork before the fish is introduced. A bare, newly set-up tank, however chemically perfect, offers no food, and the fish will starve over days to weeks while appearing otherwise healthy. Supplemental foods — blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini), spirulina wafers and sinking algae discs — help bridge gaps and sustain the fish if biofilm becomes thin, but they are supplements, not substitutes. Small frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia or finely chopped bloodworm are accepted occasionally and provide useful protein. The fish grazes all day; it is not satisfied by once-daily feeding.
Mating
As with most hillstream loaches, detailed observations of courtship and sex differentiation in Sinogastromyzon dezeensis are sparse — the species is rarely kept and has not been widely studied in the aquarium. In related hillstream genera, males are typically distinguishable from females at maturity by a slimmer, narrower body profile and sometimes by subtle tubercles or roughened skin on the snout and pectoral fin rays during breeding condition; females are deeper-bodied when gravid. These differences are likely present in Sinogastromyzon but may be difficult to detect in young or out-of-condition fish.
General accounts of hillstream loach reproduction suggest that males can be territorial towards one another, particularly in smaller aquaria where territory boundaries on the rock surface cannot be clearly established. Keeping more than one male in a confined space may produce persistent low-level aggression. A group of six or more individuals, maintained in a spacious tank with ample territory — dense rockwork offering visual breaks — appears to reduce tension and may be necessary to observe any natural courtship behaviour.
Breeding
Sinogastromyzon dezeensis has not been reliably bred in home aquaria, and breeding records for the genus as a whole are very scarce. In allied hillstream loach genera — most notably Sewellia lineolata — spawning has occurred in mature, strongly flowing river tanks: males were observed performing a characteristic fanning or vibrating display near nest depressions in coarse gravel, eggs were deposited among and between stones, and no parental care followed hatching, which took roughly two weeks at cool temperatures. A broadly similar pattern is plausible for Sinogastromyzon.
For this species the honest picture is that breeding in the aquarium is at best extremely rare and requires conditions — sustained cool temperatures, powerful and varied current patterns, deep, mature biofilm, and a well-conditioned group of adults — that are difficult to provide. The aquarium trade is supplied primarily by wild-collected specimens; captive-bred Sinogastromyzon dezeensis are not commercially available. Keepers interested in attempting a spawn should focus on long-term conditioning of a sexed group in a mature, high-flow system rather than expecting rapid results. Eggs, if produced, would be adhesive or wedged among fine gravel, and the fry would require microscopic algae and infusoria at first feeding.
In the aquarium
Sinogastromyzon dezeensis is a rewarding but unforgiving species to keep — it will thrive in the right setup and decline rapidly in the wrong one. The right setup has three non-negotiable features: strong, turbulent water movement (a turnover rate of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour is the baseline), cool temperatures in the range the species naturally experiences, and a thick, established coat of algae and biofilm covering as much of the rockwork as possible before the fish arrives. A power head or wavemaker directed along a rock-pile, combined with full-spectrum lighting run for eight or more hours daily, provides both the flow and the light needed to maintain biofilm growth. The tank should be mature — at minimum several months established — before these fish are purchased.
Because the skin is nearly scaleless, Sinogastromyzon dezeensis is highly sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many common medications, particularly organophosphate-based treatments. Despite this vulnerability it is prone to the skin and gill irritation that is common in high-turnover, crowded retailer systems, and newly acquired fish should be acclimatised carefully and quarantined. Suitable tankmates are other cool-water, high-flow species — mountain minnows, White Cloud Mountain fish (Tanichthys albonubes) and similar rheophilic companions — rather than warm tropical community fish. This species should not share a tank with fish requiring temperatures above roughly 75 °F, as compromising on temperature to suit tankmates invariably disadvantages the loach.
Conservation
Sinogastromyzon dezeensis has not been individually assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Across the genus Sinogastromyzon, conservation status is mixed: several species are Data Deficient (reflecting how poorly surveyed many Yunnan streams remain), a few are assessed as Least Concern, and at least one congener (S. puliensis) has been flagged as Vulnerable. The cautious inference for S. dezeensis — a geographically restricted stream endemic known from a single locality area in Yunnan — is that it may be locally vulnerable to habitat change, though no formal assessment exists.
The primary threats to hillstream loaches in Yunnan are broadly those facing southern Chinese freshwaters: sedimentation and land clearance smothering the boulder and cobble substrates on which these fish depend; abstraction reducing stream flow in drier seasons; and the cumulative impacts of agricultural runoff. Watershed hydropower development in Yunnan has also altered flow regimes in numerous stream systems. The aquarium trade appears to collect this species in small numbers, and the volumes involved are unlikely to be the dominant pressure on the population, but wild-collection for the trade should be considered when purchasing and the fish should be kept as long-term stock rather than casually replaced.
