The genus Sinogastromyzon is characterised by its greatly flattened body, paired pectoral and pelvic fins expanded into adhesive surfaces, and its restriction to high-gradient hill streams of East and Southeast Asia. The placement of hillstream loaches has shifted repeatedly as molecular phylogenetics has refined Cobitoidea. Balitoridae as broadly construed once absorbed families now recognised separately (Gastromyzontidae in some schemes), but the genus Sinogastromyzon itself has remained stable. The specific epithet minutus is Latin for small or tiny, distinguishing this species by its diminutive size within its genus. Published records for this species outside the original description are data-sparse, and several biological parameters below are inferred from the well-documented genus-level biology rather than verified species-level data.
Morphology
Like its congeners, Sinogastromyzon minutus is strongly dorsoventrally flattened — the body is broad and low rather than laterally compressed, with the head and abdomen forming a near-continuous ventral plane that the fish presses against rock. Its habitat is fast, clear, well-oxygenated, cool fresh water running over rock, gravel and coarse substrate at moderate to high gradient. Stream conditions are characterised by powerful current, high dissolved-oxygen saturation approaching atmospheric equilibrium, and cool temperatures — the genus operates well within a broadly cool temperate-to-subtropical window (roughly 61–75 °F), and is ill-suited to the warm, still conditions of a typical tropical community aquarium. Feeding
Sinogastromyzon minutus is an aufwuchs grazer. In its natural torrent habitat it rasps algae, diatoms, and the thin biofilm of microorganisms and organic matter that coats exposed rock surfaces in fast-flowing, well-lit stream sections. This is a highly specialised dietary niche: the fish is adapted to continuous, slow, low-intensity grazing rather than active prey pursuit, and the morphology of its mouth and flattened undersurface is tuned to the task.
In the aquarium this feeding mode imposes a strict requirement: the tank must carry a genuine established biofilm across its rockscape before the fish can sustain itself. A newly set-up bare tank provides essentially nothing to graze, and Sinogastromyzon will starve in it regardless of what sinking foods are offered. Supplementary foods — algae wafers, blanched courgette or spinach, small frozen invertebrates such as daphnia — help, but they do not substitute for a mature, naturally colonised rock surface. Mating

In the aquarium
Sinogastromyzon minutus is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is rarely if ever available to hobbyists; it appears occasionally in specialist imports of mixed hillstream loaches from southern China or Vietnam, if at all. The care requirements of the genus are demanding by community-tank standards and suit only a dedicated species or biotope setup.
The non-negotiables are strong water movement (a powerhead or additional pump to create turbulent flow over a rock-covered bottom), cool temperatures (targeting the 64–72 °F range rather than tropical warmth), high dissolved oxygen, and a mature aquarium whose rockscape carries genuine biofilm growth. Water quality must be pristine — hillstream loaches are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite and fare poorly in tanks with accumulating waste. The skin is reduced in scales, making the fish sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength medication doses; if disease treatment is needed, half-dose cautiously with a gentle product. These are not schooling fish in the tight-shoal sense of botiids, but keeping several together in a spacious, well-furnished tank is preferable to isolation. Their small size is an asset in terms of tank footprint, but it also makes them vulnerable to larger, boisterous tank-mates.

Many range-restricted hillstream endemics in southern China and Indochina share this exposure without having received the survey effort needed for a formal assessment.

Its conservation status should be treated as uncertain pending verified range data and a formal assessment; the genus Sinogastromyzon contains species of narrow endemic distribution that warrant monitoring as human modification of upland stream catchments intensifies across its region.
