Sinogastromyzon szechuanensis, the Sichuan hillstream loach, is a dorso-ventrally flattened torrent specialist from the upper Yangtze River system of south-central China. Its body forms a hydrodynamic disc that lets it cling to bare rock in the rush of fast, oxygen-charged hill streams — the same environment it cannot survive without. Growing to roughly 3.5–4 in, it is a biofilm grazer that will starve in a newly-set-up or under-mature tank and suffocate in still, warm water; it is a fish for the committed hillstream keeper, not a casual community purchase. Listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, it is confined within China to the river systems draining Sichuan, Guizhou, Hubei and Gansu provinces.

Taxonomy & naming

Sinogastromyzon szechuanensis was described by the Chinese ichthyologist Ping-wen Fang in 1930, taking its specific epithet from Szechuan — the Wade-Giles romanisation of Sichuan province, the heart of its range. The genus name Sinogastromyzon combines the Latin Sino- (Chinese) with the Greek gaster (belly) and myzon (sucking), a reference to both its geographic origin and the sucker-like underside that allows it to anchor in current. The species belongs to the family Balitoridae (sometimes written Homalopteridae in older literature; the two names refer to the same broadly defined group and the shift reflects ongoing reorganisation of Cypriniformes). A 2021 phylogenetic analysis based on full mitochondrial genome sequences confirmed the taxonomic placement within Balitoridae, consistent with earlier morphological work.

The genus Sinogastromyzon currently contains roughly a dozen species, all native to fast hill streams in China and northern Vietnam. Sinogastromyzon szechuanensis is among the most widespread members of the group within the upper Yangtze basin. It is listed in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) under the original combination, the authority being Fang, 1930 without parentheses — indicating the species was described in its current genus.

Morphology

Like all balitorid hillstream loaches, Sinogastromyzon szechuanensis is extremely depressed — flattened top to bottom to a disc-like profile. The pectoral and pelvic fins are splayed laterally and held against the substrate, forming together with the flattened belly a hydrodynamic surface that generates negative lift in fast current, pressing the fish against rock rather than being swept off. The head is broad and blunt, the mouth inferior (positioned underneath, facing downward) with fleshy lips adapted for rasping periphyton from rock. The body lacks large exposed scales, giving the skin a smooth, finely textured feel; this near-scaleless condition is a significant point for disease management.

Maximum standard length is reported at 4 in (SL) on FishBase, making this a mid-sized representative of the genus. Colour is brownish to olive above with variable darker mottling that helps the fish blend against stone and algae; the underside is pale. Paired fins may show subtle banding. There is no erectile suborbital spine in Sinogastromyzon — this is a feature of the botiid loaches (Botiidae), a different family; balitorid hillstream loaches achieve grip through their fin and body shape rather than spines.

Habitat

Sinogastromyzon szechuanensis is endemic to the upper Yangtze River system, recorded from rapid-flowing hill streams in Sichuan, Guizhou, Hubei and Gansu provinces of China. It is a strictly freshwater, demersal (bottom-dwelling) fish of rheophilic habit — evolved for fast, turbulent, oxygen-saturated water over rock and gravel substrates in elevated terrain. It is also locally consumed as a food fish, which points to its availability in its native streams.

The water conditions of its home streams are cold to cool relative to many aquarium fish: mountain and foothill torrents at altitude, typically clear, with very high dissolved oxygen and negligible organic load. These are not warm tropical lowland rivers; the current is powerful enough to displace an unprepared hand. The substrate is bedrock and cobble, colonised by the thick algal and diatom biofilm — aufwuchs — that is the fish's primary food source.

Feeding

Sinogastromyzon szechuanensis is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In the wild it uses its inferior, fleshy-lipped mouth to rasp algae, diatoms, detritus and associated micro-invertebrates directly from rock surfaces in fast-flowing streams. This feeding mode means that the fish is not adapted to foraging in open water, chasing prey, or competing at the surface — it works the bottom and the vertical faces of submerged stones.

In the aquarium, feeding this species correctly is the most critical element of its care and the point where most keepers fail. A tank that has not run for several months will have little biofilm to offer, and the fish will steadily decline. The foundation of its diet should be the natural algal and diatom growth on rocks, glass and décor in a mature, established tank — tanks that have "gone green" on the glass between cleans are ideal. Supplementary foods should include sinking algae wafers, blanched greens (courgette, spinach), and small live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp and bloodworm. The cache source notes that the species has limited interest in purely vegetable foods and benefits from protein-rich invertebrate items alongside plant matter. Offer food in small quantities frequently, and ensure every individual reaches the food.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Sinogastromyzon szechuanensis is subtle. As with most hillstream loaches, females tend to be deeper-bodied and broader in the abdomen when in spawning condition — a distinction visible from above in a well-lit tank. Males may show slightly more developed tubercles on the snout or pectoral fin rays during the breeding season, but reliable external sexing in this genus is difficult.

In the wild, breeding presumably follows seasonal cues linked to water temperature, flow and food availability — the patterns typical of hill-stream balitorids. The brief notes available on captive spawning suggest that pairs or trios may be conditioned for breeding by a combination of high water quality, strong flow, a mature biofilm surface, cool temperatures toward the lower end of the range, and possibly a simulated cool-season period. Males likely pursue females across the rock surfaces, fertilising eggs she deposits in crevices or on the face of stones, though detailed field observations for this genus are limited.

Breeding

Sinogastromyzon szechuanensis is one of the few hillstream loach species for which captive spawning has been recorded, though it remains challenging and cannot be considered routine. In captivity, females deposit eggs on flat rocks or among gravel; the male fertilises them externally. Neither parent guards the eggs, and adults must be removed after spawning or they will consume the eggs. Eggs are reported to hatch within two to four days under good conditions; the resulting fry become free-swimming approximately a week after hatching and can be started on microworms or newly hatched brine shrimp.

However, breeding success is strongly dependent on maintaining near-perfect water parameters — cool, fast, highly oxygenated water with minimal waste — and on having a biologically mature tank with a living biofilm surface for the fry to graze. Failure is common even when conditions appear correct. The honest baseline is that most hillstream loaches are not bred reliably in home aquaria, and this species should not be purchased in the expectation of propagating it. Spawnings, where they occur, are the reward of an experienced hillstream keeper running a dedicated, well-established system.

In the aquarium

Sinogastromyzon szechuanensis is an experienced keeper's fish. It belongs in a dedicated hillstream setup, not a general community aquarium, and every aspect of that setup must be calibrated to the fast, cool, oxygen-rich environment of a Chinese hill stream. The most common ways it dies in captivity are starvation (from a tank without established biofilm) and oxygen deprivation (from still or under-filtered water).

Flow is non-negotiable. The filtration system should turn over the tank volume four to twenty times per hour, and powerheads or circulation pumps directed across flat rock surfaces are strongly recommended. The tank should be well stocked with smooth stones, slate and cobble to provide both grip and the large surface area that biofilm colonises. A minimum tank footprint of 75 × 12 in is a reasonable starting point; longer is better. Temperature should be kept in the cool range of 68–75 °F and must not be allowed to creep into typical tropical aquarium temperatures, as warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen and the fish will stress. Water quality must be excellent — frequent water changes, a mature biological filter, and minimal organic waste. pH between 6.0 and 8.0 is tolerated, with medium water hardness typical of the cache source's figures (90–268 ppm).

Because the skin is largely scaleless, this species is sensitive to copper-based medications and should receive reduced (typically half) doses of any treatment. It is worth noting that hillstream loaches in general are prone to catching ich when stressed by poor flow or rising temperatures, so the keeper must watch closely and treat cautiously. Keep a group of at least three to five individuals — they are not obligate-social in the botiid sense, but single specimens are less settled and more likely to hide. This is a fish that rewards a committed setup; the keeper who gets it right will have a fascinating, long-lived animal clinging to the glass in full view.

Conservation

Sinogastromyzon szechuanensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, an evaluation made in February 2010. It is broadly distributed across the upper Yangtze basin, recorded from multiple provinces (Sichuan, Guizhou, Hubei, Gansu), and occurs in the kinds of fast hill streams that, at high altitude, are less immediately threatened by the lowland agriculture, urban drainage and water extraction that affect slower river habitats.

The species is noted to be used as a food fish locally, so there is some low-level subsistence harvest. The broader threat profile for Yangtze basin endemics includes river engineering (dams impede upstream migration and alter flow regimes), sedimentation from deforestation on steep slopes, and agricultural run-off. These pressures operate at the watershed scale and, while not currently sufficient to elevate this species above Least Concern, they are the relevant background risk for any hill-stream endemic with a limited altitudinal range. The aquarium trade in this species is modest; it appears occasionally in specialist hobbyist supply rather than mass trade, and its demanding care requirements suppress demand. There is no evidence of trade-driven population pressure.
