Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa aliensis was described by Wu & Zhu in 1979, one of dozens of stone loaches named from surveys of Tibetan plateau drainages in the second half of the twentieth century. The species epithet references Ali (also transliterated Ngari), the prefecture in far western Tibet where the type material was collected. Unlike many plateau loaches that have shuttled between the old genera Nemachilus and Noemacheilus before landing in a modern combination, no earlier generic placement for this species turned up in the available sources — it appears to have always stood as Triplophysa aliensis.
It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest and most species-rich family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Triplophysa is itself an enormous genus, with well over a hundred described species concentrated on the Tibetan plateau and in the mountain drainages of Central and East Asia, many of them narrow-range endemics separated by the same kind of isolated, high-altitude watershed that appears to define this species.
Morphology
Triplophysa aliensis is a small loach, reported at up to about 4 in standard length, in line with the modest size typical of Nemacheilidae generally. Like other members of the family it is an elongate, cylindrical, small-scaled or near-scaleless fish built for holding position and darting over stony substrate in current, rather than for open-water swimming.
Detailed morphological description — fin ray counts, colour pattern, barbel arrangement, and whether it carries the erectile suborbital spine seen in some loach lineages — was not available in the sources consulted here. As a Nemacheilidae, it is reasonable to expect the family's typical near-scaleless skin, a trait that matters for husbandry even where the species-level detail is undocumented.
