Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa alticeps was described by the Russian ichthyologist Solomon Herzenstein in 1888. It belongs to Triplophysa, one of the largest genera of stone loaches, in the subfamily Nemacheilinae within the family Nemacheilidae — a family separated from the old broad "Noemacheilus" catch-all as that group was progressively split apart by later revision. A subsequent redescription (Zhu, 1981) treated the species as the type of a proposed subgenus, Qinghaichthys, though the genus-level placement in Triplophysa is what stands in current usage, and this article keeps that name rather than attempting to adjudicate the subgeneric question.
The genus name Triplophysa comes from the Greek triplos, "thrice" or "triple," and physa, "tube" or "bladder," a reference to features of the swim bladder and its associated structures shared across the genus. The species epithet alticeps is Latin for "high-headed," from altus ("high") and caput ("head"), describing the fish's raised head profile.
Morphology
Triplophysa alticeps is a small loach, reaching a maximum recorded total length of about 3.5 in — modest even by the standards of the small-bodied Nemacheilidae. Like other members of its family it is a slender, elongated, near-scaleless fish built for life against the current on stream and lake-margin bottoms; the near-naked skin typical of Nemacheilidae is a point that matters for anyone who might ever need to medicate one, since scaleless loaches absorb treatments readily and tolerate full-strength doses poorly.
Detailed morphological description beyond the FishBase summary and the mitochondrial-genome literature is sparse in the sources available here, and this article will not invent fin-ray counts, colour pattern, or barbel detail that has not been verified. This species is endemic to Qinghai Lake (Qinghaihu) in Qinghai Province, China, and its associated waters on the Tibetan Plateau — a cold, high-altitude, brackish-saline lake fed by freshwater streams draining the surrounding Qaidam Basin and highlands. Triplophysa as a genus is distributed across Central Asia and southwestern China, and this particular species' entire known range sits within that one lake system, making it a true single-locality endemic in the sense that matters for conservation: there is nowhere else for it to be lost from.
The water here is cold and clear, a world away from the warm, soft, tannin-stained rivers that many aquarium loaches come from. Related Triplophysa such as T. stoliczkai are documented in the roughly 61–68 °F range, and while no water-chemistry data specific to T. alticeps was found in the sources checked, that cold, well-oxygenated, flowing profile is consistent with its Tibetan Plateau setting and with the genus generally.
