Triplophysa aluensis is a small stone loach known only from a tributary of the Nanpanjiang River, part of the Pearl River drainage in Yunnan Province, southern China. Like most of the roughly 250 species in this sprawling genus it is a slender, bottom-hugging micro-predator built for clear, fast, cool mountain streams rather than the aquarium, and it remains one of the many Triplophysa that has never been formally assessed for conservation status. Almost nothing about it has been studied beyond the original description and its confirmed locality — an honest reflection of how little attention most single-stream Nemacheilidae receive.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa aluensis was described by Li and Zhu in 2000. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family of loaches and one that has been repeatedly reshuffled as ichthyologists split the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus into narrower, better-defined groups such as Triplophysa, Schistura and Barbatula. Triplophysa is itself an enormous genus, with well over 200 described species concentrated on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the mountain drainages of southern and western China.

The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid name and combination, and this species is currently accepted there as Triplophysa aluensis. As with many recently described, geographically narrow Triplophysa, the species has not accumulated a body of synonyms or later revisions in the literature available to us — it has simply not been studied further since its description.

Morphology

Triplophysa aluensis is a small loach, reported at a standard length of about 3 in, consistent with the modest size typical of stream-endemic Triplophysa. Like other members of the genus it has the classic nemacheilid build: an elongated, roughly cylindrical body tapering toward the tail, a flattened underside suited to gripping the streambed, small eyes set high on the head, and barbels around the mouth used to feel out food on the bottom.

Detailed morphological data — fin ray counts, exact colouration, and diagnostic features separating it from close relatives — has not surfaced in the sources available to us, and we would rather note that gap than guess. Like many of its relatives it likely carries the near-scaleless, delicate skin typical of Nemacheilidae, a point that matters for husbandry even in species, like this one, that are essentially unknown to the aquarium trade.

Habitat

The species is endemic to a tributary of the Nanpanjiang River, part of the Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) drainage system in Yunnan Province, southern China. This places it among the many range-restricted Triplophysa scattered across the mountain drainages of southern and western China, several of which are known from a single stream system.

Triplophysa as a genus is characteristic of clear, fast-flowing streams in high-altitude and mountainous terrain, particularly across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and its surrounding drainages; species in cooler, higher reaches live in cool, oxygen-rich, swiftly moving water over rock and gravel. Specific temperature, pH and flow data for this exact tributary have not been located, so we describe the genus-level pattern rather than invent numbers for this stream.

Feeding

As a benthic member of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa aluensis is best understood as a small bottom-dwelling micro-predator. Across the genus, Triplophysa forage over the substrate of fast mountain streams for small aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae, using their barbels to locate food among gravel and stones.

No species-specific dietary study is available for this fish, but the genus-wide pattern gives a reliable guide: it is not a grazer or algae-scraper but an active hunter of small invertebrate prey picked from the streambed, a habit shared with its close relatives across the Tibetan Plateau and southern Chinese mountain drainages.

Mating

No description of courtship or spawning behaviour specific to Triplophysa aluensis is available. Within the genus, breeding males of some Triplophysa species are known to develop nuptial tubercles during the reproductive season, a common secondary sexual signal among stream-dwelling loaches, but whether this occurs in T. aluensis has not been documented in the sources available to us.

Given how little field or aquarium observation exists for this narrow-range endemic, any account of pairing behaviour, seasonal timing or spawning triggers would be speculation rather than fact, and we have chosen to say so rather than fabricate detail.

Breeding

Triplophysa aluensis is not known to have been bred in the aquarium, and data on its reproduction even in the wild is sparse. Stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae) as a group are typically egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward, and there is no reason to expect this species to differ from that widespread family pattern.

In practice this species sits at the extreme data-sparse end of the loach spectrum: a single-locality endemic described from Yunnan with no aquarium history and no documented spawning record. Set expectations accordingly — this is a fish known to science from very limited observation, not a candidate for home breeding projects.

In the aquarium

Triplophysa aluensis has no established presence in the aquarium hobby, and we found no keeper reports, care sheets or trade history for it. It should not be assumed available or suitable for purchase; this entry exists to document the species accurately, not to promote it as an aquarium fish.

Were it ever to appear in the hobby, the sensible starting point would be the general Triplophysa/Nemacheilidae template: cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated, fast-moving water over a hard substrate with good current, since that is the habitat the genus is built for. As with other nearly scaleless loaches, caution with copper-based and full-strength medications would be prudent. But these are inferences from its relatives, not confirmed requirements for this specific, virtually unstudied species.

Conservation

Triplophysa aluensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; we record this honestly as Not Evaluated rather than assign a status that has not been assessed. This is a common situation among the many narrow-range Triplophysa scattered across southern and western Chinese mountain drainages, most of which have received little to no conservation attention despite often being restricted to a single stream or small drainage.

Without a formal assessment there is no documented population trend or threat listing to report. Single-locality mountain-stream endemics in this genus are, as a class, vulnerable to the kinds of pressures that affect small Chinese drainages generally — damming, water abstraction and pollution — but we have no data specific to this species' status or trend, and none should be implied.
