Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa altipinnis was described by the Russian ichthyologist Alexander Prokofiev in 2003. It sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loach family, which was split out of the old broad Cobitidae and Balitoridae over the past few decades as the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — has repeatedly revised the group; many species once placed in Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have since been redistributed among genera including Triplophysa, Schistura and Barbatula. Triplophysa is itself an enormous genus, with well over 200 described species concentrated on the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding high-altitude drainages, and new species continue to be described from this region.
The species epithet altipinnis is a straightforward Latin compound and is treated in more depth under Etymology below. As with many Triplophysa described from small, remote Qinghai drainages, published information beyond the original description is limited, and this article does not extend beyond what the available sources support.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Triplophysa altipinnis shares the family's general body plan: an elongate, sub-cylindrical body, a small ventral or subterminal mouth suited to picking food from stream substrates, and paired barbels around the mouth for sensing prey. Like other stone loaches it is likely to carry an erectile suborbital spine and near-scaleless or embedded-scale skin, both hallmarks of the loach body plan that make this group sensitive to rough handling and to strong medications.
No maximum length has been published specifically for T. altipinnis. Related Tibetan-Plateau congeners such as Triplophysa stolickai reach around 6.5 in SL, and Triplophysa species in general span roughly 2–8 in SL, so a modest size in that range is plausible, but this should be read as a proxy from relatives rather than a confirmed figure for this species.
Habitat
Triplophysa altipinnis is endemic to the eastern Qaidam Basin in Qinghai Province, China — a high-altitude, largely endorheic (interior-draining) basin on the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. FishBase records it as a demersal species of temperate freshwater, consistent with the cold-adapted, high-elevation ecology typical of the genus.
Triplophysa as a genus is strongly associated with fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, clear mountain and plateau streams, and recent research on the genus's eco-physiology documents adaptations to cold, hypoxic high-altitude water. The precise stream or streams that make up the type locality, and the fine-grained habitat structure (substrate, exact flow regime, vegetation), are not detailed in the sources available for this article.
Feeding
No diet study specific to Triplophysa altipinnis was found. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a family are typically bottom-oriented micro-predators, picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and crustaceans from among stream stones and gravel, and this species is presumed to follow the same pattern given its placement in the genus and family.
In the absence of species-specific data, the safest statement is the family-level one: a benthic invertebrate feeder of clear, fast water, rather than a grazer or a fish that would be expected to take much plant matter.
Mating

Triplophysa altipinnis is not an established aquarium species, and no husbandry account for it was located. Anyone attempting to keep it would need to work from the genus's well-documented needs: cold-to-cool, clear, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water rather than the warm still conditions suited to many tropical loaches, a hard substrate of gravel and stone for a bottom-dwelling stream fish to forage over, and — as with other scaleless loaches — caution with copper-based and full-strength medications, since the family's reduced scalation makes it more permeable and drug-sensitive than typical scaled aquarium fish.
Given how little is documented about this species' size, temperament or tank requirements, prospective keepers should treat any care regime as a best-effort extrapolation from related, better-known Triplophysa such as T. stolickai rather than a confirmed protocol for T. altipinnis.
Conservation
Triplophysa altipinnis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. This is common among narrowly distributed Nemacheilidae described from remote high-altitude drainages, where formal conservation assessment lags behind taxonomic description.
As an apparent endemic of the eastern Qaidam Basin, its status would be tied closely to the condition of that specific drainage system; the sources available for this article do not document any particular threats, trade pressure or population trend, and none should be inferred.
