Cobitis elazigensis is a slender, temperate spined loach endemic to the upper Euphrates drainage of eastern Turkey, part of the wider Tigris-Euphrates basin. Described in 1988 from a small creek near Elazığ, it is one of dozens of narrow-range Cobitis species that Eurasian ichthyologists have carved out of what was once treated as a handful of widespread "spined loaches." It carries the erectile suborbital spine and near-scaleless skin typical of the family, sifts sand and detritus for small invertebrates, and — like its temperate relatives, unlike the tropical Cobitidae of Southeast Asia — is a cool-water fish rather than a heated-tank one. It is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade, but its biology follows the well-documented pattern of its congener the common spined loach, Cobitis taenia.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis elazigensis was described by Brian W. Coad and Ahmet Sarieyyüpoglu in 1988, in Ichthyological Research (34(4): 426–430), from a creek at Cip in the Murat Nehri drainage — a tributary of the Euphrates — in Elazığ Province, Turkey, which serves as the type locality and gives the species its name. It belongs to the genus Cobitis, the spined loaches proper, within the family Cobitidae, and its validity is recognised by the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid fish names.

The genus Cobitis has been heavily revised since the mid-20th century, as what were once treated as one or two widespread Eurasian "spined loaches" turned out to be dozens of genetically and morphologically distinct, often narrow-range species — a pattern especially pronounced across Anatolia and the Caucasus. C. elazigensis is one such Tigris-Euphrates endemic, distinguished from its relatives by details including two Canestrini's scales on the pectoral fin, a suborbital spine with a dorso-lateral branch, a relatively large adult size exceeding 7 in total length, 47–49 vertebrae, and reduced or absent lateral body spotting compared to congeners.

Morphology

Like all members of Cobitidae, C. elazigensis is a true loach: an elongate, laterally compressed, bottom-dwelling fish carrying an erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath each eye, the suborbital spine that gives the family its common name of spined loaches. The spine can be flicked out for defence and is sharp enough to snag in a net, so careful handling matters. FishBase records a maximum size of about 6.5 in standard length for males and unsexed individuals, making it a comparatively large member of the genus — consistent with the original description's note of specimens exceeding 7 in total length.

The body is covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin functionally naked, a trait shared across the family and one with real consequences for disease susceptibility and medication tolerance. Diagnostic features separating this species from its close Cobitis relatives include the paired Canestrini's scales at the base of the pectoral fin, the branched form of the suborbital spine, a reduced lateral spot pattern compared to more boldly marked congeners, and a vertebral count of 47–49.

Habitat

Cobitis elazigensis is endemic to the upper Euphrates River system in eastern Turkey, within the broader Tigris-Euphrates basin — an Old-World, entirely freshwater range with no presence outside Anatolia. The type locality is a creek at Cip in the Murat Nehri (Murat River) drainage, a major Euphrates tributary, near Elazığ.

FishBase classes it as a subtropical, benthopelagic freshwater fish, and the genus as a whole favours clear, flowing streams with soft substrates and dense marginal vegetation, where the fish can bury or hide in sand and silt. This is a temperate-to-subtropical species of running Anatolian streams, not a warm tropical one — a distinction that matters directly for how it should be kept, since it does not belong in a heated tropical community tank.

Feeding

As a benthic omnivore, C. elazigensis forages over and within soft sediment for small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and other tiny prey — along with detritus, in keeping with FishBase's trophic level estimate of around 3.3, typical of a small predator on invertebrates rather than a grazer or true omnivore-generalist. Sand-sifting behaviour, in which the loach works through the substrate with its barbels and snout to root out buried prey, is the norm across Cobitis and its relatives.

A soft, sand-based substrate is essential for this feeding style to work naturally; on gravel or bare glass a sand-sifting loach cannot forage the way its body and behaviour are built for. No trade-specific feeding data exists for this species, but its congener Cobitis taenia — a well-studied stand-in for genus-level habits — takes live and frozen invertebrate foods readily alongside sinking prepared foods in captivity.

Mating

Detailed courtship behaviour has not been documented for C. elazigensis specifically, and no sexual dimorphism data beyond the general pattern for the genus is available in the cited sources. FishBase notes the species is oviparous, with the possibility of distinct pairing behaviour during breeding, in line with the wider Cobitis pattern.

The best-documented congener, Cobitis taenia, spawns in spring, from roughly April to June in temperate Europe, as day length and water temperature rise — a strongly seasonal cue typical of temperate spined loaches. Given that C. elazigensis lives in a comparable temperate-to-subtropical Anatolian stream climate, a similar spring spawning window driven by rising water temperature is plausible, though this has not been confirmed for the species itself.

Breeding

Cobitis elazigensis is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, the pattern universal across the spined and pond loaches: ripe adults release adhesive eggs into dense vegetation, plant roots or among stones in shallow, flowing water, and take no further part once spawning is complete. This is documented directly for the well-studied congener Cobitis taenia, and there is no reason from the genus-level biology to expect anything different in C. elazigensis.

Several temperate Cobitidae — including some Cobitis and Sabanejewia species, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been spawned in ponds or unheated tanks by hobbyists and researchers taking advantage of their cool-water tolerance and natural spring trigger. C. elazigensis itself has no documented aquarium or captive-breeding record in the sources available here; as a narrow-range Anatolian endemic essentially absent from the hobby, it should honestly be treated as unbred in captivity rather than assumed to follow the pond-spawned pattern of its better-known relatives.

In the aquarium

Cobitis elazigensis is not established in the aquarium trade and no keeper-reported husbandry data exists for it in the sources consulted here. What can be said with confidence follows from its taxonomy and its documented temperate-to-subtropical habitat: this is a cool-water loach from flowing Anatolian streams, not a heated tropical fish, and any attempt to keep it should start from an unheated or lightly-warmed setup with a soft sand substrate for its natural sifting behaviour, rather than the warm still water suited to lowland tropical loaches.

As with every member of Cobitidae, the near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many standard medications — a point worth flagging even in the absence of trade experience, since a scaleless spined loach reacts to poor water quality and medication the same way its better-known relatives do. Given the total absence of documented aquarium history, anyone encountering this species should treat it as a conservation-sensitive, essentially wild-only fish rather than an established ornamental.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Cobitis elazigensis as Least Concern in 2013. This reflects a population endemic to a fairly restricted upper Euphrates range in Elazığ Province but apparently stable within it, without the severe range restriction or documented decline that pushes some Anatolian spined loaches into threatened categories.

As with many narrow-range Anatolian and Caucasian Cobitis species, the long-term risks for this fish are tied to the health of its specific stream system — water abstraction, damming, pollution and habitat alteration across the Euphrates drainage — rather than any aquarium-trade pressure, since the species has no meaningful presence in the ornamental trade. Its Least Concern status should be read as a snapshot of a stable population in a system that, like much of the Tigris-Euphrates basin, faces ongoing water-management pressure.
