Taxonomy & naming
Yunnanilus chui was described by Yang in 1991 and placed in Yunnanilus, a genus of small nemacheilid loaches largely restricted to the lakes and streams of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in southern China — the genus name itself simply means "of Yunnan." The species sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loach family, which was split out of the old broad "Noemacheilus/Nemacheilus" grouping as ichthyologists worked through the family's enormous diversity across Asia and Europe; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the valid combination Yunnanilus chui.
The specific epithet honours the Chinese ichthyologist Chu Xin-Luo, a fitting dedication for a fish described from one of the endemism hotspots — the plateau lakes — that Chu's generation of Chinese ichthyologists did so much to document. As with many of the plateau's Yunnanilus, the species is known essentially only from its type locality, which is itself part of the taxonomic and conservation story: a fish this narrowly distributed is easy to overlook and easy to lose.
Morphology
Yunnanilus chui is a small, slender nemacheilid, reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length, with a terminal mouth, short barbels and a slim caudal peduncle typical of the genus. Distinguishing features noted for the species include a very short lateral line, reduced to just two to four pores, and nine branched dorsal-fin rays. Like other Nemacheilidae it lacks the erectile suborbital spine that marks the botiid loaches; its defences are camouflage and a benthic, hugging-the-bottom lifestyle rather than a weapon.
As with most small nemacheilids, the skin bears no true scales in the way a typical cyprinid does, or carries them only as fine, deeply embedded elements — a near-scaleless condition shared across the family that makes these fish sensitive to harsh water conditions and medications. Beyond the diagnostic measurements captured in its original description and subsequent database records, detailed accounts of colour pattern and live appearance have not been located in the available sources; this is a fish that has drawn taxonomic attention but very little natural-history documentation.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Fuxian Lake (Fuxianhu), a large, deep freshwater lake on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, which serves as its type locality and, as far as is documented, its entire known range. FishBase records its climate as tropical and its habitat as freshwater and demersal — a bottom-dwelling fish of the lake rather than a fish of open water.
Fuxian Lake itself is one of China's clearest and deepest lakes, part of a small cluster of ancient plateau lakes that also hold other narrowly endemic fishes; that isolation is precisely what has allowed distinct species like Y. chui to evolve in the first place, and precisely what leaves them with no alternative habitat to fall back on if conditions in the lake change. No further detail on preferred depth, substrate or microhabitat within the lake was found in the cache and should not be assumed.
Feeding
No species-specific diet study for Yunnanilus chui was located in the available sources. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches as a group are bottom-foraging micro-predators and grazers, working over sand, gravel and biofilm-covered surfaces for small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey, alongside some algae and detritus; Yunnanilus species in the hobby literature are generally described as taking a mixed diet of small live and frozen foods together with biofilm grazing.
Given the lack of a dedicated study for this species, the safest statement is that Y. chui most likely follows this generalist micro-predator/grazer pattern typical of its genus and family, foraging along the lake bottom, but this should be read as an inference from its relatives rather than a confirmed fact about the species itself.
Mating
No published account of courtship, spawning behaviour or sexual dimorphism in Yunnanilus chui was found in the available sources. This is not unusual for a small, narrowly endemic loach that has never entered the aquarium trade and has been the subject of very little field research beyond its original description and subsequent range-and-status records; data here is genuinely sparse rather than simply unreported.
What can be said follows from its family: nemacheilid loaches in general are egg-scattering spawners with no pair-bonding or nest-building behaviour, and there is no reason from anything in the record to expect Y. chui to differ. Any specific claim about triggers, seasonality or courtship display for this species would be speculation and is deliberately omitted here.
Breeding
Yunnanilus chui is not known to have been bred in captivity, and no aquarium spawning reports were found. Because the species is effectively absent from the aquarium hobby, there is no farmed or hobbyist-bred supply to speak of; any individuals seen outside China would almost certainly be wild-collected, and given its Endangered status and single-lake range, collection for the trade would itself be a conservation concern rather than a benign source of stock.
In the aquarium
Yunnanilus chui is not an established aquarium fish, and no hobbyist husbandry account for the species specifically was located. It should not be treated as a casual community-tank subject: it is a tiny, Endangered, single-lake endemic, and keeping or trading wild-collected individuals runs directly against its conservation needs.
Where the genus Yunnanilus is kept at all, general practice for small nemacheilids applies as a baseline expectation rather than a confirmed protocol for this species: cool-to-mild, clean, well-oxygenated water with a soft sand or fine-gravel substrate, a mature biofilm surface to graze, gentle-to-moderate flow, and a shoal rather than one or two individuals, since small loaches of this kind are generally more settled in numbers. As with other thin-skinned, near-scaleless loaches, caution with copper-based and full-strength medications would be prudent if the species were ever kept. Given the total absence of a trade or husbandry record, none of this should be read as tested advice for Y. chui itself.
Conservation
Yunnanilus chui is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Endangered (EN), a status recorded via its FishBase citation as of a January 2024 assessment, under criteria consistent with an extremely restricted range and habitat vulnerability (criterion B1ab(v)). The species is known only from Fuxian Lake, and a single-lake endemic distribution is inherently precarious: any pollution, water-level change, invasive species introduction or habitat alteration affecting that one lake threatens the entire global population of the species, with no other population to buffer the loss.
China's plateau lakes, including Fuxian Lake, have faced well-documented pressures from pollution, shoreline development, water abstraction and the introduction of non-native fish over recent decades, and endemic fishes restricted to these lakes are widely recognised as being among the most threatened in Chinese freshwaters as a group. No information was found linking the aquarium trade to Y. chui's conservation pressures — the species is not established in the hobby — so the threats here should be understood as habitat- and lake-condition-driven rather than collection-driven.
