Taxonomy & naming
Yunnanilus forkicaudalis was described by Li in 1999, with the full authorship recorded as Li in Li, Wu, Xu, Gao, Chen, Wu & Wang, 1999. It sits in the genus Yunnanilus, a group of small stone loaches largely restricted to Yunnan Province and neighbouring parts of southern China, within the family Nemacheilidae — the true stone and brook loaches, and the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Older regional literature sometimes places Nemacheilidae as a subfamily (Nemacheilinae) within a broader Balitoridae, a classification still seen in some database records; current treatments recognise Nemacheilidae as its own family.
The species' taxonomic standing is not entirely settled: some authorities regard Y. forkicaudalis as a valid species while others treat it as a junior synonym of Yunnanilus macrositanus. Pending a fuller revision, it is carried here as a distinct, valid taxon, consistent with its listing in the Catalog of Fishes and its own IUCN Red List assessment. As with much of the Yunnanilus radiation, the genus and its species boundaries have been repeatedly reshuffled as regional ichthyologists describe new stream-endemic populations, and further revision of this species should be expected.
Morphology
Detailed morphological description of Yunnanilus forkicaudalis is not available in accessible literature, and no size data have been recorded for the species specifically. As a member of Yunnanilus, it can be expected to share the genus's general build: a small, slender, cylindrical stone loach, typically only a few centimetres long, with a subterminal mouth suited to picking food from stream substrate. Related, better-documented Yunnanilus species run in the range of roughly 1–1.5 in standard length, and Y. forkicaudalis is presumed to be similarly small, though its exact dimensions are unrecorded.
Like other nemacheilids, it almost certainly carries the family's characteristic erectile suborbital spine beneath the eye and the near-scaleless or fine-scaled skin typical of the group — both worth keeping in mind for handling and medication even though they have not been specifically confirmed for this species. Given the general absence of published data, any statement about colour pattern or fin shape beyond genus-level generalities would be guesswork, and none is offered here.
Habitat
Yunnanilus forkicaudalis is endemic to Yunnan Province in southern China, with its type locality given as Lunan County, Heilongtan, in the Pearl River basin region. FishBase records it as a subtropical, demersal freshwater fish, consistent with the streams and karst spring systems of the Yunnan plateau that many Yunnanilus species inhabit.
Specific data on flow, substrate, dissolved oxygen or pH at its home locality have not been located. Typical of Nemacheilidae as a whole, however, stone and brook loaches of this kind are associated with clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated streams rather than still or heavily vegetated water, and a subtropical Yunnan stream environment would be expected to run cool to mild rather than tropically warm. This should be treated as an inference from the family and region rather than a documented fact for the species itself.
Feeding
No diet information specific to Yunnanilus forkicaudalis has been located. Stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae are, as a rule, bottom-foraging micro-predators, picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny stream-bed prey from among gravel and stones, and this is the reasonable working assumption for this species as well.

It does not appear to be part of the ornamental trade, and no husbandry accounts, tank-size recommendations or compatibility notes specific to this species have been located. What can be said, cautiously, is drawn from its genus and family: related Yunnanilus species that do reach hobbyists are kept in cool-to-mild, well-oxygenated, flowing water and are gregarious, doing best in groups.
Given the wider pattern in Nemacheilidae, any specimen encountered in the hobby should be assumed to be scaleless or near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, warranting the same caution used with other stone loaches. Because there is no documented aquarium history for this exact species, prospective keepers should treat it as an experimental, poorly-understood fish rather than a known quantity.
Conservation
Yunnanilus forkicaudalis is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, reflecting how little is known of its population size, range extent and threats beyond its Yunnan type locality. This status is common among narrow-range Chinese stream endemics in Nemacheilidae, many of which are known from only one or a handful of localities and have never been the subject of a dedicated survey.
No information on collecting pressure, habitat degradation or trade involvement specific to this species has been found. Given its apparent absence from the aquarium trade, any conservation concern would stem from habitat change within Yunnan's streams and karst waters generally — a pressure affecting the region's freshwater fauna broadly — rather than from any documented species-specific threat.
