Yunnanilus ganheensis was described in 2009 by An, Liu & Li, part of a wave of species-level work on the genus Yunnanilus that followed the broader splitting of the old, catch-all "Nemacheilus"/"Noemacheilus" loaches into the modern Cobitoidea genera — Yunnanilus, Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and others — now recognised by the Catalog of Fishes. The genus Yunnanilus itself is endemic to southeastern China, concentrated in Yunnan and Guangxi, and comprises dozens of small, similar-looking stone loaches, many of them restricted to a single stream or drainage.
The species epithet ganheensis is a locality name, formed from the Ganhe — the stream in Yunnan that is its type locality — plus the Latin adjectival suffix -ensis, "of" or "belonging to." As with many recently described Yunnanilus, it is known essentially only from its original description and the handful of museum specimens collected there; no subsequent taxonomic revision or aquarium literature has added materially to what was published in 2009.
Morphology
Yunnanilus ganheensis is a small, slender nemacheilid, reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length — tiny even by the standards of stone loaches. Like its genus-mates it carries the boldly patterned flank typical of the group: FishBase records roughly 10–12 square black blotches running down each side, set against a paler ground colour, with a dorsal fin formula of iii-8 branched rays.
As a nemacheilid, it shares the family's key traits: a cylindrical, faintly compressed body built for holding position against current, a small subterminal or inferior mouth suited to picking food off the streambed, and the near-scaleless, or very finely scaled, skin typical of true loaches — a trait that makes the whole family sensitive to medications and slower to recover from skin damage than fully scaled fish. Where an erectile suborbital spine is present in the group it is small and easily overlooked compared to the prominent spine of the botiid loaches; detailed morphological notes for this particular species beyond the original description are not available, so finer anatomical points should be treated as data-sparse rather than assumed.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Ganhe, a stream in Yunnan Province, southwestern China — its type locality and, as far as published records show, the only place it has been documented. Yunnan's streams in this region are typically cool-to-warm, clear, fast-flowing and well-oxygenated, running over rock, gravel and sand, which matches the habitat generally described for the genus: small stone and brook loaches of clear, swift, oxygen-rich water rather than the slow, warm, tannin-stained pools associated with many other tropical Asian fish.
Beyond that type-locality record, nothing further has been published on its specific microhabitat, seasonal movements, or tolerance range. Given how many Yunnanilus species are single-stream endemics, it is reasonable to treat this fish as a narrow-range specialist of running Yunnan stream water rather than a widespread generalist, though this has not been formally studied.
Feeding
FishBase lists a trophic level of about 3.1 for Yunnanilus ganheensis, consistent with an omnivore that leans toward small invertebrate prey rather than a strict herbivore or grazer. This fits the general pattern for stone and brook loaches, which forage over the streambed for aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates dislodged by the current, picking at biofilm and detritus along the way.
No aquarium feeding record exists for this species, since it does not appear to be kept in the hobby. Based on its genus and trophic level, a diet of small live or frozen invertebrate foods delivered near the substrate would be the expected requirement for any fish of this type, but this is an inference from its biology rather than an observed fact.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been recorded for Yunnanilus ganheensis. FishBase notes explicitly that its maturity and reproductive biology are undocumented. There is no description of sexual dimorphism, breeding coloration, or pairing behaviour for this species in the available literature.
As with feeding, what little can be said is inferred from the wider family: nemacheilid stone and brook loaches typically show no elaborate courtship and no lasting pair bond, instead broadcasting eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water during a spawning event. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches as a group are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care, and are rarely bred even in captivity; that is the honest baseline expectation for Yunnanilus ganheensis as well, but it has not been directly documented in this species.
The species has never been reported in the aquarium trade, so there is no hobbyist spawning history to draw on either. Anyone encountering claims of home-bred Yunnanilus ganheensis should treat them with real skepticism given the complete absence of a documented trade or captive population.

As a species known only from a single stream in Yunnan, it fits the broader pattern seen across the genus Yunnanilus: narrow-range, single-drainage endemics that are inherently vulnerable to local habitat degradation, damming, pollution or water extraction even without a formal threat assessment. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species, since it does not appear to be traded; any conservation concern would stem from land-use and water-quality pressures on the Ganhe itself rather than from the ornamental fish trade.
