Taxonomy & naming
Yunnanilus jinxiensis was described in 2009 by Zhu, Du and Chen, with the type locality given as Ludon village in Jingxi County, Guangxi, China. It has also been placed in the genus Paranemachilus in some treatments, an older or parallel combination that surfaces in a handful of regional papers and databases; the Catalog of Fishes and Catalogue of Life both currently list the valid combination as Yunnanilus jinxiensis, and that is the name used here.
The species sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest and most taxonomically volatile family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, regularly reshuffled as karst-stream endemics across southern China and Southeast Asia are described, re-examined and moved between genera such as Yunnanilus, Schistura, Traccatichthys and Paranemachilus. The genus name itself points to its geography: Yunnanilus species are concentrated in and around Yunnan and neighbouring Guangxi in southern China.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Yunnanilus jinxiensis has the compact, slender, near-cylindrical body typical of stone and brook loaches — a small, bottom-dwelling fish built for holding position against current rather than for open-water swimming. FishBase records a maximum size of 3 in standard length, making it one of the smaller loaches in the atlas.
Like other nemacheilids, it almost certainly carries the small erectile suborbital spine characteristic of the group, tucked in a groove beneath the eye, and the fine, deeply embedded scales (or scale loss) typical of the family that leave the skin more exposed than in a scaled fish — a point that matters for handling and medication. As with most scaleless or lightly-scaled loaches, caution with copper-based and full-strength medications would be prudent. These are inferences from family-level care practice, not a documented profile for this specific, apparently uncollected-in-the-hobby species.

As with many single-drainage karst-stream endemics in southern China, the longer-term risks to this kind of species are typically habitat-related — water diversion, pollution or development pressure on small streams — rather than collection for the aquarium trade, which does not appear to target this species.
