Taxonomy & naming
Yunnanilus jiuchiensis was formally described in 2018 by Du, Hou, Chen & Yang in the journal Zootaxa, based on a holotype of 1.5 in standard length and a series of paratypes measuring 1–1.5 in SL, all collected from the Tuojiang River near Jiuchi, Pengzhou, Sichuan Province, China — the locality that gives the species its epithet. It sits in the genus Yunnanilus, a large assemblage of small stone loaches distributed across Yunnan, Sichuan and neighbouring parts of southwestern China, within the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, itself part of the superfamily Cobitoidea alongside the botiid, cobitid and hillstream loaches.
Nemacheilid taxonomy in this region has been extensively revised over the past few decades, with many species once lumped under broad genera like Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus later redistributed among Yunnanilus, Schistura, Triplophysa and other genera as the family was studied in finer detail. Y. jiuchiensis is a comparatively recent addition to that ongoing work, and the Catalog of Fishes — the standing authority for valid names — recognises Yunnanilus as its current, valid genus placement.
Morphology
The original description separates Yunnanilus jiuchiensis from its congeners on a combination of fine anatomical characters: the processus dentiformis (a toothlike process on the roof of the mouth found in some Yunnanilus) is absent; scalation is scarce, leaving much of the body looking naked; the lateral line is incomplete, carrying only 6–11 pores rather than running the full length of the flank; the eye diameter exceeds the width of the interorbital space; and the caudal peduncle is shorter than it is deep. Adults reach only around 1.5 in standard length, consistent with the genus as a whole, whose members are uniformly small.
Like other nemacheilids, Y. jiuchiensis almost certainly carries the family's small erectile suborbital spine and a near-scaleless, delicate skin — traits that run throughout Cobitoidea and matter directly for how the fish should be handled and treated for disease in captivity, even though they are not spelled out in the original description for this specific species.
Habitat
Yunnanilus jiuchiensis is known only from its type locality in the Tuojiang River drainage at Jiuchi, Pengzhou, in Sichuan Province, southwestern China — a fast-flowing stream system typical of the region's foothill and montane watercourses. Like the great majority of stone loaches in this genus, it is presumed to inhabit clear, cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated flowing water over a stony or gravel bed, rather than still or warm lowland habitat.
No dedicated habitat survey data beyond the description locality has been located for this species, so its full range and any finer habitat preferences remain unconfirmed. This narrow-range, single-drainage distribution pattern is common among recently described Yunnanilus species, many of which are known from only one or a handful of streams.
Feeding
No feeding data specific to Yunnanilus jiuchiensis has been located. Across the genus, Yunnanilus species are small benthic micro-predators, picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey items from the streambed in fast, clear water; the related and better-studied Y. cruciatus, for example, is documented taking exactly this kind of diet in the wild and in captivity.
On that basis Y. jiuchiensis can reasonably be expected to feed the same way, though this is inference from its relatives rather than a direct observation of this species.
Mating
No spawning behaviour, courtship, or sexual dimorphism has been documented for Yunnanilus jiuchiensis. Stone and brook loaches in this family typically show little obvious external dimorphism outside the breeding season, with females tending to appear fuller-bodied when gravid, but nothing specific to this species has been recorded.
As a small, fast-water Nemacheilidae species, any reproduction is likely to follow the pattern typical of the family: eggs are scattered rather than guarded, with no evidence of the cave-nesting or mouthbrooding strategies seen in unrelated fish groups.
Breeding
Data on captive or wild breeding of Yunnanilus jiuchiensis is not available; this is an honestly sparse area for a species described only in 2018 from a single river system. Stone and brook loaches as a group are egg-scatterers over gravel and stones in fast water, providing no parental care, and they are rarely bred in home aquaria — most individuals in the hobby, where Yunnanilus species appear at all, are wild-collected rather than tank-raised.
There is no indication that Y. jiuchiensis is established in the aquarium trade at all, so its breeding biology in captivity is effectively unknown and should not be assumed to differ from the genus norm of scattered eggs and no brood care.
In the aquarium
Yunnanilus jiuchiensis has no documented aquarium-keeping history, and this profile should be read as inference from its genus rather than first-hand care experience. Related Yunnanilus species such as Y. cruciatus are kept at modest, cool-to-mild temperatures around 73–79 °F in clear, flowing, well-oxygenated water, and do best in shoals of eight or more — small stone loaches are gregarious fish that show poorly when kept alone or in pairs.
As with other nemacheilids, a near-scaleless skin should be assumed, meaning any treatment for disease should favour gentle, reduced-strength medications and avoid copper-based products. A stony or gravel substrate with good water movement and oxygenation, rather than a still, warm, planted-tank setup, would best match the fast-stream habitat implied by its original description — but given the complete absence of dedicated husbandry records for this exact species, any specimen encountered in the trade should be treated with caution and its origin questioned.
Conservation
Yunnanilus jiuchiensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, which is typical for a narrow-range stream loach described as recently as 2018 and known from a single river drainage. No conservation assessment, population trend, or threat data is available.
As a single-locality endemic of the Tuojiang River drainage in Sichuan, it shares the general vulnerability of many small-range Yunnanilus species to localised pressures such as stream damming, pollution and habitat alteration, though no specific study of this species' status has been located. Given the lack of data, its conservation status is best described honestly as unknown rather than assumed to be secure.
