Taxonomy & naming
Yunnanilus longibulla was described by Yang in 1990 and placed in the genus Yunnanilus, family Nemacheilidae, order Cypriniformes. Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches — is the largest of the loach families by species count, and Yunnanilus is one of its many genera confined to a single region: the rivers, streams and lakes of southeastern China, especially Yunnan Province, where repeated taxonomic work has continued to split out new species from what were once broader, poorly resolved population complexes.
Of the roughly three dozen nominal species described in Yunnanilus, the Catalog of Fishes recognises the majority as valid, longibulla among them. The genus has been the subject of ongoing revision as ichthyologists resurvey Yunnan's river systems and describe additional narrow-range species, so the taxonomy here should be read as a snapshot of a genus still being actively worked out rather than a closed book.
Morphology
Like other Nemacheilidae, Yunnanilus longibulla is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach with a flattened underside suited to life on the streambed. Type material measured roughly 1–1.5 in standard length, making it one of the smaller stone loaches in the hobby's orbit — this is a fish sized in centimetres, not tens of centimetres. The body is scaled except on the head and thorax, the typical Nemacheilidae pattern, and the skin is otherwise thin and close to naked, a trait shared across the family that carries real consequences for how the fish tolerates medication.
Beyond the type description, published morphological detail is sparse. We do not have confirmed data on this species' colour pattern, barbel count or fin-ray formula, and rather than guess at cosmetic details we note plainly that they are not well documented in the literature available to us.
Habitat
The species is known from the Jinsha River system — the uppermost reach of the Yangtze — in the vicinity of Yongsheng, Lijiang, in Yunnan Province, southwest China. This puts it among the many Yunnanilus species restricted to a single river drainage or even a single stream in the fractured, mountainous topography of southeastern China, where isolated valleys have produced a great deal of narrow-endemic diversity in this genus.
Detailed habitat data — substrate, flow regime, elevation, associated species — has not been documented for us beyond the river system itself. Many Nemacheilidae in this region are stream-bed fish of cool to moderate, clear, flowing water, but we do not have site-specific data confirming the exact conditions at the type locality for this species, and we would rather say so than invent a precise profile.
Feeding
No diet study specific to Yunnanilus longibulla is available to us. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches as a group are bottom-foraging micro-predators, working the substrate of streams for small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — and this is the reasonable general expectation for the genus, but we have not confirmed gut-content or field-feeding data for this particular species.
In captivity, related small Yunnanilus have been kept on a varied diet of sinking foods — small live and frozen fare such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm alongside quality sinking pellets — and there is no reason to expect this species to differ markedly, though this should be read as a genus-level inference rather than species-specific evidence.
Mating
No sexual dimorphism has been documented for Yunnanilus longibulla specifically. In at least one better-studied congener kept in the hobby, males develop small tubercles and whisker-like chin protuberances when in breeding condition, which is a plausible pattern for the genus, but we have no confirmation that longibulla shows the same signs, and courtship behaviour for this species has not been described.
Given the near-total absence of published breeding observations, the honest position is that mating behaviour in this species is undocumented rather than merely subtle.
Breeding
Yunnanilus longibulla has not been reported as bred in the aquarium, and we have no field or captive spawning account to draw on for this species. The reasonable expectation, based on the genus and the wider Nemacheilidae, is an egg-scattering loach with no parental care, spawning over gravel or fine substrate — but this is an inference from relatives, not a documented account of this species itself.
As with most stone and brook loaches, this is a fish that reaches hobbyists, if at all, through wild collection rather than captive propagation. Anyone keeping it should expect to enjoy an unusual regional endemic rather than plan on breeding it.
In the aquarium
Given its small type-series size — around 1–1.5 in standard length — Yunnanilus longibulla is a fish for a modestly sized, species-appropriate setup rather than a large showpiece tank. As with the rest of Nemacheilidae, it is essentially scaleless over much of the body, so medications should be dosed cautiously and copper-based treatments avoided, following the same caution warranted for scaleless loaches generally.
This species is effectively unknown in the hobby, and no established aquarium husbandry has been published for it specifically. A keeper who obtains it should treat it as an experimental, poorly documented stream fish — provide clean, well-oxygenated water, fine sand or smooth gravel, and hiding places, and observe closely rather than rely on a settled care template, because one does not yet exist for this species.
Conservation
Yunnanilus longibulla has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed category. A related congener, Yunnanilus niger, has been rated Vulnerable, which illustrates that some species in this genus of narrow-range Yunnan endemics do face real conservation pressure, but that status cannot be extended to longibulla without its own assessment.
As a fish restricted to a single river system in a region where many Yunnanilus species are known from only one or a few localities, it shares the general vulnerability of narrow-range stream endemics to habitat degradation, damming and water-quality change — risks worth naming even in the absence of a formal assessment.
