Yunnanilus longidorsalis is a small, elongated stone loach described in 2000 from the Nanpanjiang drainage of eastern Yunnan, China, one of many narrow-range Nemacheilidae endemic to the karst streams of the region. It is named for its notably long dorsal fin and is known mainly from the taxonomic and genetic literature rather than from aquarium keeping — data on its size, water preferences and behaviour in captivity are genuinely sparse. Molecular work has since placed it within a reclassified lineage sometimes referred to as Eonemachilus, though the Catalog of Fishes still governs which combination is valid; here it is treated under its original and still-current name, Yunnanilus longidorsalis.

Taxonomy & naming

Yunnanilus longidorsalis was described by Li, Tao & Lu in 2000, placed in the genus Yunnanilus within the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. The genus Yunnanilus itself was erected to hold a group of small, slender nemacheilids largely endemic to Yunnan province and neighbouring parts of southern China, many of them confined to a single drainage or even a single cave or spring system.

More recent mitochondrial genome work has recovered this species nested within a lineage some authors now refer to as Eonemachilus, reflecting the ongoing reshuffling that has affected Nemacheilidae generally over the past two decades — much as the old Botia and Noemacheilus were split apart. That generic question is not yet settled in a way that displaces the original combination, so this profile keeps the well-established name Yunnanilus longidorsalis. Because it is a narrow-range stream endemic described relatively recently, published biological detail beyond the original description and subsequent genetic studies is limited, and this account is written accordingly conservatively.

Morphology

Like other members of its genus, Yunnanilus longidorsalis is a small, elongated loach with a slender, only mildly compressed body typical of the stone-loach group. The species name longidorsalis — "long-dorsal" — points to its most distinctive feature, a dorsal fin that is notably elongated compared with its Yunnanilus relatives. Fin-ray counts recorded for the species are 14 dorsal soft rays and 9 anal soft rays.

As a nemacheilid it carries the family's characteristic near-scaleless, smooth skin rather than heavy body armour, which in loaches generally translates into greater sensitivity to medications and to abrupt water-quality swings. Unlike the botiids, stone and brook loaches such as this one do not carry an erectile suborbital spine — that structure is a botiid feature, not a nemacheilid one. Specific measurements of maximum length have not been reliably published for this species; related small Yunnanilus species are typically only a few centimetres long, and that pattern is the best available guide here.

Habitat

The species is endemic to eastern Yunnan, China, recorded from the Nanpanjiang drainage — part of the greater Pearl River (Zhujiang) system that drains the karst plateau of southeastern Yunnan into Guangxi and eventually the South China Sea. Like most Yunnanilus, it is a demersal, bottom-dwelling fish of small, clear, flowing streams rather than open rivers or still water.

Yunnan's karst streams are typically cool to moderately warm, well-oxygenated and often spring-fed, running over rock, gravel and sand substrates. Because detailed environmental data specific to this species has not been published, its account here draws on the general habitat pattern documented for the genus and family rather than site-specific measurements — a limitation worth stating honestly rather than guessing at exact figures.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study has been published for Yunnanilus longidorsalis, but its ecological niche is consistent with the wider Nemacheilidae: a benthic micro-predator that forages over stream substrate for small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey items sifted from gravel, sand and biofilm.

In captivity, related Yunnanilus species take small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm and daphnia readily and will also accept sinking pellets and wafers, though they may ignore floating flake aimed at midwater fish. Any keeper working with this species should assume the same pattern and offer a variety of small, sinking foods rather than relying on a single food type.

Mating

No description of courtship or spawning behaviour has been published for Yunnanilus longidorsalis specifically. External sexual dimorphism has not been documented for the species, and given how little biological data exists beyond the original taxonomic description and later genetic studies, nothing further can be honestly stated here.

What is known comes from related Yunnanilus and other small Nemacheilidae, where spawning is a simple, unelaborate affair: ripe adults scatter eggs over the substrate in flowing water with no courtship display and no nest-building, a pattern typical of stone and brook loaches generally rather than anything specific to this species.

Breeding

As with the great majority of Nemacheilidae, Yunnanilus longidorsalis is not known to have been bred in home aquaria, and in fact does not appear to be established in the aquarium hobby at all — it is known almost entirely from taxonomic and phylogenetic literature rather than from the trade. The genus as a whole follows the stone-loach pattern: egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry.

Given the total absence of published aquarium-breeding accounts for this species, the honest breeding mode to record is an inferred one, based on its family and genus rather than direct observation: an egg-scatterer with no parental care, rarely or never bred in captivity.

In the aquarium

Yunnanilus longidorsalis is not established in the aquarium hobby, and no care reports specific to the species are available. Any keeper who did obtain it should treat it as a small, cool-to-moderate-temperature stream fish in the general Yunnanilus mould: a well-oxygenated tank with moderate to strong flow, a substrate of sand and fine gravel, smooth stones, and clean, well-filtered water, sized modestly to match its likely small adult length.

Because it is near-scaleless like other nemacheilids, standard loach caution applies if it is ever kept: avoid full-strength copper-based and other harsh medications, and treat gently and conservatively if disease occurs. Given how little is documented about this species in captivity, anyone acquiring it should approach it as an experimental, poorly-known fish rather than an established aquarium subject, and should be cautious about assuming wild collection has not been involved, given its narrow native range.

Conservation

Yunnanilus longidorsalis has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Many narrow-range Yunnanilus and related nemacheilid species endemic to Yunnan's karst drainages lack any formal conservation assessment despite their restricted distributions, which leaves their status genuinely uncertain.

As a single-drainage endemic confined to the Nanpanjiang system in eastern Yunnan, the species is inherently vulnerable to habitat degradation, water abstraction and pollution affecting that drainage, even though no population trend data has been published. The precautionary honest note is that a species this narrowly distributed and this poorly studied warrants conservation attention regardless of its formal Red List status.
