Yunnanilus nanpanjiangensis is a small stone loach known only from the Nanpanjiang River drainage of Yunnan Province in southern China, one of dozens of Yunnanilus species that fill the cool, clear headwater streams of this part of the country. Like the rest of its genus it is a diminutive, near-scaleless micro-predator built for fast, oxygen-rich water rather than a still aquarium — an unassuming little fish that has drawn far more attention from taxonomists describing China's stream fauna than from the aquarium hobby. Taxonomy & naming

Yunnanilus nanpanjiangensis was described in 1994 by Li, Mao and Lu, part of a wave of Chinese ichthyological work through the 1990s and 2000s that documented the country's rich and still incompletely catalogued nemacheilid fauna. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches — the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and to the genus Yunnanilus, a group of small, mostly Chinese stream loaches named for Yunnan Province, where the great majority of its species occur.

Nemacheilid taxonomy has been repeatedly revised as the old broad genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart on anatomical and molecular grounds, sending many species into narrower genera such as Yunnanilus, Schistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula. Y. nanpanjiangensis has remained in Yunnanilus since its original description, and the Catalog of Fishes — the standing authority for valid fish names — lists no change to that combination. As with many recently described, narrow-range Chinese stream loaches, published biological and hobby literature on this particular species is thin.

Morphology

Yunnanilus nanpanjiangensis is a small loach, reported to reach a maximum standard length of about 3 in, in keeping with the generally diminutive build of the genus.
