Yunnanilus niger was described by Maurice Kottelat and Xin-Luo Chu in 1988, part of a wave of new Yunnanilus species erected as Chinese ichthyologists surveyed the isolated karst streams and marshes of Yunnan through the late twentieth century. It sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which was itself only widely recognized as distinct from the old broad Balitoridae/Cobitidae groupings in recent decades — a reminder that the genus-and-family map of Cobitoidea has been redrawn repeatedly, and the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the currently valid combination.
The genus name Yunnanilus references Yunnan, the province in southwest China where the great majority of its member species are endemic. The specific epithet niger is simply Latin for "black," a direct and honest description of this fish's most obvious field character. Morphology
This is a small loach, reported to reach about 2.5 in standard length, with a slender, elongate body typical of Nemacheilidae.
