Yunnanilus niulanensis is a small stone loach known only from a single river system in Yunnan, China, high on the plateau that feeds the upper Yangtze drainage. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest family of true loaches — the clear-stream micro-predators that scatter eggs, carry no cave-guarding or mouthbrooding behaviour, and are rarely if ever bred in the aquarium. Reaching barely 2 in, it lives out its life foraging over sand and mud in slow, clear water at nearly 1,2953 ft altitude, and its entire known range is narrow enough that the IUCN lists it as Vulnerable.

Taxonomy & naming

Yunnanilus niulanensis was described by Chen, Yang & Yang in 2012, taking its epithet from the Niulanjiang (Niulan River), the tributary system in Yunnan where the species is found. It sits in the genus Yunnanilus, a name that itself points to the type region — Yunnan Province in south-west China — and is one of many small nemacheilid genera erected from the old, overly broad Nemachilus/Noemacheilus complex as the family has been progressively split using modern taxonomic review.

The species belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. A recent taxonomic revision has proposed that Y. niulanensis, along with the related Y. qujinensis, may be a junior synonym of Eonemachilus caohaiensis; FishBase and the IUCN Red List, however, continue to treat Y. niulanensis as a valid, separate species, and it is retained as such here pending further consensus.

Morphology

This is a small, slender stone loach, with FishBase reporting a maximum standard length of about 2 in — modest even by nemacheilid standards. Like other members of its family it has the characteristic near-scaleless, elongate body of a stream-dwelling micro-predator built for holding position and darting among cover on the bottom, rather than for open-water swimming.

Detailed morphological description beyond the size and habitat data captured by FishBase is not available from the sources on hand; as with many recently described, single-locality nemacheilids, published data on this species is sparse. What is well established for the genus and family generally is the erectile suborbital spine and the effectively naked, delicate skin shared across Nemacheilidae, both relevant to how the fish should be handled and treated for disease.

Habitat

Yunnanilus niulanensis is endemic to the Yanglinhe River, a tributary of the Niulanjiang (Niulan River) in Songming County, Yunnan, China, at an altitude of around 1,2982 ft. This places it on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, in cool, high-elevation fresh water rather than the warm lowland streams typical of many tropical Asian loaches.

FishBase describes the species as demersal, inhabiting slow-flowing, clear water over a sandy or muddy substrate. That combination — high altitude, clear water, a soft bottom, and gentle rather than torrential flow — distinguishes it from the fast, cascading hillstream habitats used by many other stone loaches, and points to a cooler thermal regime than warm-water tropical species.

Feeding

As a demersal nemacheilid with a trophic level around 3.1 on FishBase, Yunnanilus niulanensis feeds as a small-organism consumer, foraging over the sand and mud of its river bed for tiny invertebrates and other small food items — the typical diet of a stone loach picking through soft substrate in slow, clear water. Detailed dietary studies specific to this species were not found in the sources available.

In the genus more broadly, Yunnanilus species are known to take small insects, crustaceans and microplankton, which is consistent with the trophic level recorded for this species and gives a reasonable guide to what it would accept in captivity: small live, frozen and sinking foods rather than flake left on the surface.

Mating

No species-specific courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Yunnanilus niulanensis in the sources reviewed. Across the genus, Yunnanilus species are egg-scatterers with no pair-bonding or nest-building; ripe fish release small, sticky eggs among fine-leaved vegetation, and breeding activity in related species has been noted to concentrate in the cooler months (autumn through spring).

Given the total absence of published breeding observations for this particular species, the aquarium hobby and the scientific literature alike have little to say about its reproductive biology beyond what can be inferred from its genus — and that inference should be held loosely rather than presented as established fact for niulanensis itself.

Breeding

Yunnanilus niulanensis is not documented as bred in the aquarium hobby, and data specific to its reproduction is sparse to the point of being effectively absent. Based on the pattern seen across Nemacheilidae and reported for the genus Yunnanilus, the expected mode would be an egg-scatterer depositing eggs over gravel, sand or among fine plant matter in flowing water, with no parental care of any kind — not a cave-guarding male and not a mouthbrooder, patterns that belong to other fish groups entirely.

Given how narrowly this species is known — a single river system at high altitude — and the general rarity of home spawnings across stone and brook loaches, prospective keepers should treat this as an unbred species in captivity. Anyone who succeeds in observing spawning behaviour would be adding genuinely new information to the record.

In the aquarium

Because Yunnanilus niulanensis is a genuinely narrow-range, recently described endemic, aquarium-specific husbandry data for this exact species is not available. What can be said with reasonable confidence, drawn from its genus and family, is that it should be kept as a group fish — Yunnanilus species generally do best in groups of eight or more, with dense planting or other cover to retreat into — and that, like other nemacheilids, it is effectively scaleless and will be sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, warranting careful, reduced-dose treatment if disease occurs.

Its native water — slow-flowing, clear, over sand and mud at nearly 1,2953 ft altitude — suggests a cooler-running tank than the warm, still setups suited to many lowland tropical loaches; keepers should avoid defaulting to high tropical temperatures for a fish drawn from a cool plateau stream. At a maximum of about 2 in, it would suit a modest-sized aquarium with a fine, soft substrate, but given its Vulnerable status and the near-total absence of trade or husbandry reports, this is not a species keepers should expect to find or plan around — its interest here is scientific and conservation-related rather than as an established aquarium fish.

Conservation

Yunnanilus niulanensis is classified Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, assessed January 17, 2024, under criterion B1ab(iii) — reflecting a small, restricted range combined with an inferred continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. Its entire known distribution is confined to the Yanglinhe River, a single tributary of the Niulanjiang in Songming County, Yunnan.

That single-river endemism makes the species inherently vulnerable to any localized pressure — water pollution, damming, agricultural runoff or habitat alteration — that would have little effect on a widespread species but could severely impact one confined to one stream system. There is no indication in the available sources that this species is part of the aquarium trade; its conservation concern is a habitat and range issue on its home river, not a collection-pressure issue.
