Taxonomy & naming
Yunnanilus obtusirostris was described by Yang in 1995 from West Dragon Spring, part of the karst spring system that feeds Fuxian Lake in Chengjiang County, Yunnan Province, China. It was placed in Yunnanilus, a large genus of small stone loaches in the family Nemacheilidae, the largest and most species-rich of the true-loach families.
Subsequent taxonomic revision has moved the species out of Yunnanilus. Du et al. (2021), working from an examination of roughly 2,490 specimens across the group, reassigned this species and its close relatives to the genus Eonemachilus, placing it in the nigromaculatus species group; the currently valid combination under the Catalog of Fishes is therefore Eonemachilus obtusirostris. This article follows the site's genus convention and keeps it filed under Yunnanilus, but readers researching the species further should expect to find recent literature under the name Eonemachilus obtusirostris.
The species epithet obtusirostris comes from Latin obtusus, "blunt," and rostrum, "beak" or "snout" — a reference to the fish's short, blunt snout profile.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Yunnanilus obtusirostris is sparse in the available literature. As a member of Nemacheilidae, it shares the family's general stone-loach build: an elongate, cylindrical body, a ventrally flattened head suited to holding position on stream substrate, and the small, close-set scales or near-scaleless skin typical of the group, which makes these fish sensitive to certain medications.
FishBase records list 11 dorsal soft rays and 8 anal soft rays for the species. Maximum size has not been documented for Yunnanilus obtusirostris specifically; a related species in the same genus complex, Eonemachilus caohaiensis, has been recorded at 3 in standard length, which gives a rough sense of scale for the group but should not be taken as a confirmed figure for this species.
Habitat
This species is endemic to karst spring systems in Yunnan Province, southwest China, with its type locality at West Dragon Spring, which flows into Fuxian Lake in Chengjiang County. Karst springs of this kind are fed by groundwater moving through limestone, typically emerging as cool, clear, highly oxygenated water with stable chemistry.
Its habitat is therefore a narrow band of fast-flowing spring water over limestone substrate — a specialized niche shared by many Nemacheilidae stone loaches, several of which are known from a single spring or short stream reach. This narrow habitat is also what makes the species so exposed to localized pollution: because it does not range across a wider river system, contamination at the spring source threatens the entire population at once.
Feeding
No direct dietary observations for Yunnanilus obtusirostris are documented in the available sources. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.1 ± 0.3 for the species, consistent with a low-level carnivore or micro-predator, which is the typical feeding mode across Nemacheilidae: picking small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates — from the substrate of fast, clear water.
Given the absence of species-specific feeding studies, this should be read as an inference from trophic level and family pattern rather than a confirmed account of its diet in the wild.
Mating
No records of courtship, spawning behavior or sexual dimorphism have been located for Yunnanilus obtusirostris. This is not unusual for a narrowly endemic spring loach that has never entered the aquarium trade and has been studied chiefly for taxonomic purposes; field observation of reproductive behavior in such species is rare and, for this one, appears not to have been published.
Breeding
There are no aquarium breeding records for Yunnanilus obtusirostris — it is undocumented in captivity entirely. Based on the general pattern for stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae, the expected mode would be an egg-scatterer releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water, with no parental care, but this has not been confirmed for the species itself.
Given its Critically Endangered status and its total absence from the hobby, there is essentially no prospect of captive propagation contributing to its conservation at present; any future recovery effort would need to start from field-based ex-situ work rather than existing aquarium stock.

Yunnanilus obtusirostris is not a fish anyone should expect to keep. No aquarium care profiles exist for this species, it has no established presence in the hobby trade, and — as a Critically Endangered narrow-range endemic under severe pollution pressure — collecting it for the trade would work directly against its conservation. If ever encountered, any Nemacheilidae stone loach should be assumed to want cool, clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a hard substrate, and, like most near-scaleless loaches, to be sensitive to copper and full-strength medications; but none of that is a substitute for real data on this species, which does not exist.
Conservation
Yunnanilus obtusirostris is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered, current as of a January 2024 listing, under criteria B2ab(v) — indicating a small, severely fragmented or single-location range with an observed or projected decline. The species' entire known range is the karst spring system feeding Fuxian Lake in Yunnan, and it is threatened chiefly by severe mining pollution and heavy-metal contamination affecting that karst water.
Because the species is confined to a single spring system rather than a wide river network, there is no buffer against localized contamination — pollution at the source can affect the whole population directly. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this species; its conservation risk is entirely a habitat and water-quality problem in its native range, not a collection pressure.
