Yunnanilus paludosus is a small, slender stone loach known only from a single endorheic marsh system in Yunnan, China — the kind of narrow-range endemic that makes up much of the huge family Nemacheilidae. It is nearly naked-skinned, scaled only along the dorsal and ventral edges of the caudal peduncle, and reaches barely 3 in. Like its relatives it is a bold little bottom-dwelling micro-predator of small invertebrates, but almost nothing has been published on its reproduction, and it is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. The honest headline here is data scarcity: this is a Red-Listed endemic confined to one drainage, not a well-studied aquarium fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Yunnanilus paludosus was described by Maurice Kottelat and Xin-Luo Chu in 1988. It belongs to the genus Yunnanilus, a large assemblage of small stone loaches named for Yunnan province in southwestern China, within the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by species count the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. As with much of this family, the group has seen repeated taxonomic revision as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split; the Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the currently valid combination, and it retains this species in Yunnanilus.

The species epithet paludosus is Latin for "marshy" or "of the swamp," a direct reference to the marsh habitat from which it was described. No English common name is in wide use for this species; it is referred to in the literature and trade, where it appears at all, by its scientific name.

Morphology

This is a small, slender-bodied loach, with a maximum recorded size of about 3 in standard length. The body is elongate and relatively shallow, with body depth running roughly 14–16% of standard length — a lean, streamlined shape typical of small nemacheilids that hold position in current. Most tellingly, it is essentially scaleless: scales are present only along a narrow band on the dorsal and ventral margins of the caudal peduncle, leaving the rest of the body naked. That near-total absence of scales is a family-wide trait in stone loaches and is directly relevant to how the fish must be handled and medicated.

As in other true loaches, an erectile suborbital spine sits in a groove below the eye, though detailed morphological description of the species' colour pattern and fin structure is not available in the sources consulted here — this is a poorly studied, narrow-range fish, and it is more honest to note that gap than to guess at details.

Habitat

Yunnanilus paludosus is endemic to the Datangzi Marsh drainage in Luoping County, Yunnan Province, China — an endorheic system, meaning it has no outlet to the sea and its waters do not drain into a larger river system. It is a freshwater, demersal (bottom-associated) species living in a subtropical climate.

Because the species is confined to a single closed marsh drainage, its entire wild population depends on the water quality, level and connectivity of that one system. This kind of single-locality endemism is common among Yunnanilus and other Nemacheilidae in the karst and highland drainages of Yunnan, and it is also what makes such species vulnerable — there is no adjacent population to fall back on if the home water is degraded.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of about 3.1 for this species, consistent with a small invertebrate feeder — a micro-predator picking small invertebrates and other tiny prey items from the substrate and marsh vegetation, in keeping with the feeding style of the genus generally. Specific dietary studies for this species have not been published.

Related Yunnanilus species kept in the hobby, such as Y. cruciatus, take a varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrate foods on the bottom. Nothing has been documented specifically for Y. paludosus, but a similar micro-predatory diet — small live or frozen foods rather than flake — would be the reasonable expectation for a fish of this size and family.

Mating

No information on courtship, spawning triggers or sexual dimorphism has been published for this species. FishBase explicitly notes that data on its reproduction are limited, and no other source consulted here fills that gap. This is typical of narrow-range Nemacheilidae: many are known from a handful of collecting trips and a type series, with no field or captive observations of breeding behaviour on record.

Breeding

Stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae are, as a rule, egg-scatterers: ripe adults release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry. There is no reason to expect Yunnanilus paludosus to depart from that family-wide pattern, but no confirmed spawning account — wild or captive — exists for this species in the sources available.

It should be assumed rarely or never bred in the aquarium. Given that the species is not established in the hobby and its wild population is confined to a single marsh, any future captive-breeding effort would carry real conservation value, but at present this remains an unbred, largely unstudied fish.

In the aquarium

Yunnanilus paludosus is not established in the ornamental trade, and no dedicated care information has been published for it. What can be said comes from the genus and family: related small Yunnanilus such as Y. cruciatus are gregarious and do best in groups of eight to ten or more, in tanks with soft, gentle water movement and some planted or vegetated cover, at temperatures in roughly the 73–79 °F range — figures drawn from a related species, not from Y. paludosus itself, and offered only as a starting point should the species ever appear in the hobby.

As with all nearly scaleless nemacheilids, any keeper working with this genus should be cautious with medications and copper-based treatments, since the near-absence of scales makes these fish absorb chemicals readily. Given the total lack of species-specific husbandry data and its single-locality wild status, this is a fish to treat with caution rather than to source casually — if it does turn up, its origin and any conservation implications are worth asking about before buying.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Yunnanilus paludosus as Endangered (EN) on 17 January 2024, reflecting its extremely limited range: the species is known only from the Datangzi Marsh drainage in Luoping County, Yunnan, an endorheic system with no natural connection to other waters. A single-locality endemic of this kind is inherently vulnerable to any degradation, pollution or hydrological change affecting its one home marsh.

There is no evidence of an aquarium trade in this species, so collecting pressure is not a documented threat; the risk profile here is habitat-driven, tied to the condition of the Datangzi Marsh system itself. As with many restricted-range Yunnanilus, conservation of the species is inseparable from conservation of its single water body.
