Taxonomy & naming
Yunnanilus parvus was described by Maurice Kottelat and Chu Xin-Luo in 1988, in a revision of the genus Yunnanilus that introduced it as "a miniature species flock" and added six new species from China in the same paper. At the time the group was placed in the family Homalopteridae; the genus and its relatives were later reclassified into Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loach family, as the taxonomy of the old "Noemacheilus" complex was progressively split apart through the following decades.
The genus name Yunnanilus simply ties the group to Yunnan Province, its centre of diversity, and the species epithet parvus is Latin for "small" — a fitting name for a fish that tops out under 1.5 in. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid combination Yunnanilus parvus, and no subsequent synonymy or genus transfer is recorded for this species; it has remained in Yunnanilus since its description.
Morphology
Yunnanilus parvus is a small, slender nemacheilid loach, reported to reach only about 1.5 in in standard length — near the small end even for a genus of already-small loaches. Diagnostic detail beyond the original description and the summary records available is sparse; as with many members of this speciose genus, fine-scale colour pattern, fin-ray counts and body proportions are best treated as data known chiefly to the specialist taxonomic literature rather than to general references. What is recorded places it firmly within the typical stone-loach body plan: an elongate, rounded-in-cross-section body suited to living against the substrate in flowing water, with dorsal soft rays numbering 11–12 and anal soft rays around 8.
Like other members of Nemacheilidae, it can be expected to carry the family's typical near-scaleless or fine-scaled skin, a feature that across the family makes these fish quick to absorb dissolved substances through the skin — relevant to handling and, in principle, to any future aquarium care, though this species has no documented aquarium history to confirm it directly.
Habitat
The species is known only from its type locality: Nan Tong, in Kaiyuan County, Yunnan Province, in southern China. The original description records it inhabiting a cave outlet — the point where a subterranean stream emerges into open air — rather than an open river or lake margin. Karst cave systems are common across the Yunnan plateau, and many of the region's small nemacheilid loaches, including several other Yunnanilus species described in the same 1988 revision, are similarly tied to specific springs, cave mouths or short stream stretches rather than to large river systems.
No additional populations or localities are documented for Yunnanilus parvus beyond this single site, and no water-chemistry or temperature data are available in the sources consulted here. Given the karst, subterranean-influenced setting, the water at a cave outlet is typically cool, clear and well-oxygenated, consistent with the broader pattern for stone and brook loaches in the region, but this is inference from habitat type rather than measured data for this species — it is data sparse and should be treated as such.

Yunnanilus parvus is recorded as feeding on detritus at its cave-outlet habitat, and its overall trophic level has been calculated at roughly 3.1, placing it as a low-level omnivore rather than a specialised predator. This fits a fish living where a subterranean stream first reaches daylight — a zone where organic material washed from the cave system, along with whatever small invertebrates and biofilm accumulate at the outlet, would form the bulk of the available food.

The original description does note that a mature female of 1.5 in standard length — essentially the maximum recorded size for the species — carried ripe eggs of roughly 0.5 in diameter, which at least confirms that reproduction in the species involves relatively small, presumably non-adhesive-or-lightly-adhesive eggs typical of small stream and cave-margin loaches. Beyond that single data point, nothing is recorded about courtship, spawning triggers, or seasonality for this species.

There is no aquarium breeding record for Yunnanilus parvus, and none would be expected: this is an obscure, single-locality cave-outlet species with essentially no aquarium trade history. Based on the pattern for stone and brook loaches generally, and consistent with the small, ~0.5 in ripe eggs recorded in a wild female, the species is best presumed to be an egg-scatterer over gravel or rock in flowing water, with no parental care — but this extrapolation from the family rather than a documented observation for the species itself, and it should be read as an honest inference, not a confirmed account.
