Taxonomy & naming
Yunnanilus pulcherrimus was described in 2004 by Yang, Chen and Lan, and is placed in the genus Yunnanilus within the family Nemacheilidae, the true or stone loaches — the largest family of loaches, comprising small, mostly benthic fishes of fast, clear Eurasian streams. Some recent literature has treated this species under the genus Micronemacheilus instead, a reminder that the taxonomy of small nemacheilid genera in southern China remains actively revised; the Catalog of Fishes governs which combination is currently valid, and this article keeps the genus Yunnanilus as used in its original description.
The species epithet pulcherrimus is Latin for "most beautiful," a superlative referring to its distinctive banded colour pattern — a departure from the more muted patterning typical of many of its close relatives. In the aquarium trade it circulates under informal names such as "mini zebra loach" or "hovering zebra loach," both nods to its slim striped body and its habit of holding position just off the substrate.
Morphology
This is a small, slender nemacheilid loach, reaching a maximum recorded size of about 2.5 in standard length. Its most distinctive feature is its colour pattern: a series of thin vertical bars crossing a broad, dark lateral band that runs the length of the body, giving the fish a striped, zebra-like appearance quite unlike the more mottled or blotched patterning of many stone loaches. The species also carries elongated papillae on the upper and lower lips, a feature noted in its original description and useful for distinguishing it from close relatives.
As with other Nemacheilidae, Yunnanilus pulcherrimus has small or absent scales over much of the body and lacks the erectile suborbital spine that characterises the botiid loaches — a feature confined to that separate family. The near-scaleless skin typical of the group makes these fish, like most small loaches, quick to absorb medications and correspondingly sensitive to overdosing.
Habitat
The species is known from underground rivers and associated tributary streams in the Hongshuihe drainage, part of the wider Xijiang (West River) system in Guangxi, southern China, with its type locality in Du'an County. This is classic stone-loach habitat: clear, flowing water over rock, gravel or sand substrates, in a landscape riddled with the karst caves and subterranean waterways typical of the region. FishBase describes it as a demersal, tropical freshwater species, consistent with the warm lowland-to-hill streams of southern Guangxi.
Because the type locality includes underground river systems, some populations may experience reduced light and more stable temperatures than open-air tributaries — a pattern seen in a number of karst-associated Cobitoidea in this part of China. Beyond the original description and subsequent trade reports, detailed habitat data (specific flow rates, substrate composition, seasonal variation) has not been widely published, and this remains a data-sparse species outside its core taxonomic literature.
Feeding
Yunnanilus pulcherrimus is a small benthic micro-predator, foraging over the substrate for tiny invertebrates rather than grazing algae or biofilm. Aquarium-trade accounts describe it taking small live and frozen foods readily — items such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworm and similar small prey are typical fare for loaches of this size and habit.
In the aquarium it generally accepts high-quality sinking foods sized for a small mouth, and a diet weighted toward small live or frozen invertebrate foods tends to bring out its best colour and condition, mirroring its likely diet of aquatic insect larvae and micro-crustaceans in the wild. As with most small nemacheilids, it may largely ignore flake food floating at the surface, preferring to work the bottom.
Mating
No reliable account of sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species in the sources consulted, and specific spawning behaviour has not been described in the literature available. Aquarium-trade sources speculate that, as with related small nemacheilids, spawning may take place in rock crevices or similarly sheltered substrate, but this remains unconfirmed rather than observed.
Given how little is published on this species' reproductive biology, keepers should treat any claim about pairing or courtship behaviour with caution. What can be said with more confidence, by analogy to its family, is that stone and brook loaches typically do not pair-bond or display overt courtship rituals of the kind seen in cichlids or many livebearers — reproduction in Nemacheilidae is generally a simple, unceremonious release of eggs and milt over the substrate.
Breeding
Like the great majority of stone and brook loaches, Yunnanilus pulcherrimus is not established as a captive-bred species. The expected mode, based on the family's general pattern, is egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in flowing water, with no parental care given to eggs or fry once released.
Captive breeding of this species has not been documented in the sources available, and aquarium literature explicitly notes that spawning is rarely if ever recorded in home tanks. As with most Nemacheilidae, the fish in the trade are wild-collected rather than farm- or hobby-bred, and a keeper acquiring this species should expect to enjoy it as a display animal rather than attempt to breed it.
In the aquarium
At under 2.5 in, Yunnanilus pulcherrimus is one of the more modestly sized loaches suitable for a smaller specialist aquarium, though as a shoaling bottom-dweller it still does best kept in a group of five or more rather than alone. Trade sources recommend a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate with driftwood, caves and plants for cover, echoing its native mix of rock, gravel and sheltered flowing water. Recommended aquarium conditions from trade sources sit around 72–79 °F with a pH of roughly 6.0–7.5 in soft to moderately hard water — comfortably warm-temperate to tropical, not a coldwater species.
As with other near-scaleless loaches, medication should be approached cautiously and generally at reduced strength, since this group tends to be more sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength doses than scaled fishes. Being a micro-predator rather than an algae-grazer, it should be offered small live or frozen foods regularly rather than relying on flake alone, and given a well-oxygenated, gently flowing tank that mimics the clear streams it comes from.
Conservation
Yunnanilus pulcherrimus has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is therefore recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Its known range — underground rivers and tributaries of the Hongshuihe within the Xijiang basin of Guangxi, China — appears narrow based on currently published records, a pattern common among small nemacheilid loaches described from a single river system or karst region.
