Yunnanilus spanisbripes is a small, little-known stone loach described in 2009 from a single river system in Yunnan, China. Like most members of its genus it is a bold micro-predator of cool, clear, well-oxygenated water, foraging over sand and gravel for tiny invertebrates. It is confined to the Niulanjiang River drainage, a restricted range that has already earned it an Endangered listing, and outside of a handful of taxonomic and museum records almost nothing has been published on its biology — this is a genuinely data-sparse species.

Taxonomy & naming

Yunnanilus spanisbripes was described in 2009 by An, Liu & Li, with the type locality given as the Niulanjiang River near Zhanyi County, Yunnan Province, China. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the true stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, comprising hundreds of small, often narrow-range species spread across Eurasia.

The genus Yunnanilus is one of several Nemacheilidae genera erected as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were progressively split apart through the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries; Yunnanilus itself is largely endemic to Yunnan and neighbouring parts of southern China, with a number of its species — this one included — known from only one river system. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid combination, and there is no indication of a more recent revision affecting this name.

Morphology

Yunnanilus spanisbripes is a small loach, with a reported maximum standard length of about 3 in. FishBase distinguishes it within the genus by 15 to 19 pored lateral-line scales and a row of roughly 10 to 12 square black spots along each flank — a patterning detail that separates it from closely related congeners rather than a flamboyant colour pattern.

As a nemacheilid it shares the family's general build: an elongate, sub-cylindrical body, a small ventrally placed mouth suited to picking food off the substrate, and barbels around the mouth for finding prey by touch. Like other true loaches it is essentially scaleless in feel, with tiny embedded scales that leave the skin exposed and sensitive — a point that matters for medication far more than for everyday care. Beyond these diagnostic details, published morphological description of the species is limited, and finer points of its anatomy and colouration in life are not well documented in the sources available.

Habitat

The species is known from the Niulanjiang River drainage in Yunnan, southern China — a river system in the mountainous southwest of the country. Nemacheilid loaches of this region are characteristically fish of flowing streams and rivers: clear, cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated water running over sand, gravel and rock, often at some elevation, rather than the warm, still, blackwater habitats associated with lowland tropical fish.

Genus-level information for Yunnanilus describes a group generally found in rivers, streams and lakes across Yunnan and the neighbouring Guangxi region, with a number of species restricted to a single locality or even to caves. Yunnanilus spanisbripes fits that broader pattern of a narrow-range stream endemic, but no detailed habitat survey of this specific population — substrate composition, exact flow regime, associated species — is documented in the sources at hand.

Feeding

Yunnanilus as a genus is described as carnivorous, foraging on the bottom for small invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and worms — picked out of sand, gravel and leaf litter. There is no species-specific dietary study of Yunnanilus spanisbripes, but its small mouth, barbels and general nemacheilid build are consistent with this micro-predatory foraging strategy rather than grazing on algae or biofilm.

In an aquarium setting, closely related Yunnanilus species are reported foraging at a characteristic head-down angle against the substrate, working over the bottom for food rather than picking at the surface. A keeper working from this genus-level picture should plan to offer small live or frozen foods and sinking preparations that reach the bottom, since a fish built like this is unlikely to compete well for food at the surface or take dry flake reliably.

Mating

No description of courtship, spawning behaviour, or sexual dimorphism has been published for Yunnanilus spanisbripes in the sources available. Stone and brook loaches of this genus and family are not generally known for external differences between the sexes beyond the female typically carrying a heavier, egg-laden body when in breeding condition, but this has not been specifically documented for this species.

Given the near-total absence of aquarium or field breeding observations for the species, any account of its reproductive behaviour would be speculation. The honest position is that its mating behaviour is unrecorded and, based on its restricted range and lack of trade presence, unlikely to have been studied in any detail.

Breeding

As with most Nemacheilidae, Yunnanilus spanisbripes is presumed to be an egg-scattering species with no parental care — eggs released over gravel or among stones in flowing water, left to develop unguarded. This is the general reproductive mode for stone and brook loaches as a family, but it has not been confirmed specifically for this species.

There is no record of Yunnanilus spanisbripes being bred in captivity, and given its narrow natural range and its absence from the aquarium trade, this is unsurprising. Data on its breeding biology is sparse to non-existent, and a keeper or researcher should treat any claim beyond the family-level generalisation with caution.

In the aquarium

Yunnanilus spanisbripes is not an established aquarium fish, and there is no meaningful record of it being kept or traded. Genus-level care notes for Yunnanilus are nonetheless a useful guide should specimens ever reach hobbyist hands: these are fish of cool, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water, sensitive to fluctuations in water chemistry, and best avoided in a newly set up or biologically immature tank. A stable, mature filter and steady water quality matter more for this genus than for many hardier community loaches.

As with other true loaches, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many medications, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dosing. Given the tiny reported maximum size of about 3 in, a modest but well-filtered, current-rich aquarium with sand or fine gravel, driftwood and leaf litter for cover would suit the genus profile — but a prospective keeper should recognise that this species profile is built from congeneric information, not from direct experience with Yunnanilus spanisbripes itself, which remains effectively unknown in the hobby.

Conservation

Yunnanilus spanisbripes is assessed by the IUCN as Endangered, with the assessment dated 2024 and made under criterion B1ab(iii) — reflecting a very restricted range confined to a single river drainage, the Niulanjiang, along with inferred ongoing decline in the quality of its habitat. A species known from one river system has essentially no buffer against localised pressures such as pollution, damming, water abstraction or habitat modification.

The species is not part of the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a documented factor in its status; the threat picture, as for many single-locality Yunnanilus, is tied to the health of its home river rather than to fishkeeping. With so little published biological data, continued taxonomic and field survey work on the Niulanjiang system would be needed to track the species' status with any confidence.
