Characidium declivirostre was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1915. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters and their relatives — within the order Characiformes, placing it in the same broad characin lineage as the piranhas and pacus covered elsewhere in this atlas but in a very different ecological role. Good oxygenation and clean, well-oxygenated water matter more to this species than to most sedentary aquarium fish, reflecting its origin in moving streams rather than still floodplain water.
