Bivibranchia velox is a slender, silver-flanked characin from the Amazon and Orinoco basins, a member of the halftooth family Hemiodontidae rather than the piranhas and pacus most people picture under "Piranhas & Pacus." It is an elongate, fast-swimming, open-water fish that readily leaps clear of the surface when startled, and it needs well-oxygenated, moving water to thrive. Originally described as Atomaster velox before being reassigned to Bivibranchia, it reaches a modest maximum size of around 6.5 in — a schooling grazer, not a predator, and one of the quieter, lesser-known characins of the Neotropics.

Taxonomy & naming

Bivibranchia velox was originally described in 1927 by Carl H. Eigenmann and George S. Myers as Atomaster velox. It has since been reassigned to the genus Bivibranchia, within the family Hemiodontidae — the halftooths — a group of elongate South American characins distinct from the deep-bodied Serrasalmidae (piranhas, pacus and silver dollars) that dominate this atlas section. The species retains its original describer citation in parentheses, (Eigenmann & Myers, 1927), reflecting that generic reassignment under the taxonomic conventions tracked by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences).

Taxonomic placement within Hemiodontidae is confirmed in the World Register of Marine Species, which lists Bivibranchia velox among the halftooths. Data on this species specifically is sparse in the literature — much of what is documented comes from broader genus- and family-level accounts rather than species-focused study, which is typical for the less conspicuous minor characins covered here.

As an elongate, open-water hemiodontid it is very likely a shoaling species best kept in numbers, in keeping with the general pattern across Hemiodontidae, though species-specific shoaling data for B. velox was not found in the cache. It is not a piranha or pacu in temperament or size, and does not carry the legal restrictions, bite risk or outgrowing-the-tank concerns that define those groups; it is, however, a genuinely obscure species in the trade, and availability should be expected to be limited or effectively nonexistent outside specialist or wild-collected imports.
