Brycon alburnus, known locally in Ecuador as "dama", is a large, fast-swimming characin restricted to the trans-Andean rivers of the country's Pacific slope — the Guayas and Esmeraldas drainages — where it is one of the most familiar and economically important native fish. It belongs to Brycon, a genus of powerful, silvery, largely predatory-to-omnivorous river characins that stand apart from the shy, small-bodied "minor characins" they are sometimes grouped with in the aquarium hobby: adults reach over 12 in and are strong enough swimmers to be a genuine food fish rather than a nano-tank shoaler. It has essentially no presence in the aquarium trade, and what is documented about it comes overwhelmingly from fisheries and ichthyological surveys in Ecuador rather than from hobbyist keeping.

Taxonomy & naming

Brycon alburnus was described by the English ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1860, based on material from the Pacific-slope rivers of Ecuador. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) confirms the combination Brycon alburnus (Günther, 1860) as the currently valid name. It belongs to the family Bryconidae — until recently often folded into Characidae — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Brycon, a group of roughly 40 species of medium-to-large, deep-river and stream characins distributed from Mexico to Argentina.

Within its own trans-Andean range, B. alburnus is distinguished from related Brycon species by a set of fine morphological details: it lacks a premaxillary symphysial joint, and its anal fin carries iv,28–iv,30 branched elements, a count used by regional ichthyologists to separate it from congeners in the same drainages. It is placed here among the "Hemiodus & minor characins" group of this atlas as a non-piranha, non-pacu characin, though — as its size and ecology show — it is neither small nor delicate.

Morphology

Brycon alburnus has the classic Brycon build: a moderately elongated, laterally compressed, silvery body built for sustained swimming in current, with a forked tail and a terminal, slightly upturned mouth suited to an omnivorous diet taken from the water column and surface. FishBase records a maximum length of 13 in standard length, and field surveys from the Chongón reservoir in Guayas province report a size range of roughly 7.5–14 in total length in the wild population — figures that place it well above the great majority of characins kept in home aquaria.

Colouration is unremarkable by piranha or tetra standards — bright silver flanks with darker dorsal shading, consistent with a fish that relies on schooling and countershading in open water rather than on display colour. No detailed account of sexual dimorphism in coloration or fin shape is documented in the sources consulted; sex is presumably distinguished, as in other Brycon, mainly by relative body depth and size in mature, ripe fish.

Habitat

The species is effectively endemic to Ecuador's Pacific-slope river systems, being recorded as very common in the Guayas and Esmeraldas basins. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical rivers and reservoirs, occupying flowing channels as well as impounded water — it is well established, for instance, in the Chongón reservoir, where it forms part of the commercial catch. Average water temperature recorded in that reservoir runs 77–81 °F.

As a trans-Andean endemic confined to a handful of drainages on Ecuador's coastal side of the Andes, B. alburnus has a naturally narrow geographic range compared with the sprawling Amazon- and Orinoco-basin distributions typical of many Neotropical characins. No detailed pH or hardness data is available in the sources reviewed for this article; keepers and researchers should treat the specific water chemistry of the Guayas/Esmeraldas system as data sparse pending a dedicated study.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Brycon alburnus a trophic level of 2.8, placing it as an omnivore rather than a strict predator — consistent with the broader Brycon pattern of taking fruit, seeds, insects, smaller fish and plant material opportunistically in river and reservoir habitats. Local accounts from Ecuador describe it as an ecologically important omnivore within its native rivers, contributing meaningfully to nutrient and seed transport in the systems it inhabits.

No aquarium feeding data is documented for this species, since it is not established in the hobby; its wild diet profile suggests it would take a varied omnivore diet of pellets, fruit, insects and some meaty foods if ever kept, in line with other mid-sized river Brycon.

Mating

FishBase records that Brycon alburnus spawns in schools among aquatic plants during the rainy season, and fisheries data from the Chongón reservoir narrows this further, reporting the greatest reproductive activity between January and March, coinciding with Ecuador's wet season. This school-spawning pattern is broadly consistent with other river-dwelling Brycon species, which typically aggregate to spawn rather than pairing off individually.

No sources reviewed document external sexual dimorphism, courtship display, or pairing behaviour for this species — only the seasonal and locational pattern of the spawning schools. This should be treated as data sparse rather than assumed to mirror the courtship behaviour of unrelated characin groups.

Breeding

Brycon alburnus is a school (group) spawner among aquatic vegetation during the rainy season, per FishBase, with peak reproductive activity in the Chongón reservoir population recorded from January to March. This places it with the broadly egg-scattering pattern seen in many river Brycon, rather than with the nest-guarding piranhas or the foam-nest builders found elsewhere in this atlas — though no source reviewed describes egg character, incubation time, or any parental care, and none should be assumed.

There is no documentation of this species being bred in captivity or in aquaria; like many mid-sized Neotropical river characins that are important wild and reservoir fisheries rather than aquarium subjects, its reproduction is understood almost entirely from field observation of wild and reservoir-stocked populations, not from controlled breeding. This is a case where honesty about the gap matters more than filling it: breeding in captivity is undocumented in the available sources.

In the aquarium

Brycon alburnus has essentially no presence in the aquarium hobby, and none of the sources reviewed offer aquarium-keeping guidance for it. Its documented wild size — up to 13 in SL, with reservoir specimens regularly reaching 7.5–14 in total length — means that, were it ever kept, it would need a very large, long aquarium built around a strong-swimming, schooling river fish, not a nano or standard community setup; this places it in the same size bracket as many food-fish characins that are simply impractical for home aquaria.

Its real identity is as a wild and reservoir food fish: it is described as an important food fish for rural communities in Ecuador and forms part of the commercial catch from reservoirs such as Chongón. Prospective keepers should treat any Brycon alburnus offered in trade with real caution about adult size and tank requirements, and should not expect the husbandry literature that exists for small tetras or the popular pacus to transfer directly to this species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Brycon alburnus as Near Threatened (NT) in an assessment dated 10 October 2014. Its restricted trans-Andean range — confined to the Guayas and Esmeraldas basins of coastal Ecuador — makes it inherently more vulnerable than the wide-ranging Amazonian or Orinocan characins that dominate the pet trade, since a single region's habitat degradation, damming or overfishing can affect the entire species.

As a significant food fish supporting rural and commercial fisheries — including catch from the impounded Chongón reservoir — B. alburnus faces ongoing harvest pressure alongside the general threats to Pacific-slope Ecuadorian rivers, such as water development and habitat alteration. No population trend or updated post-2014 assessment is documented in the sources reviewed for this article.
