Taxonomy & naming
Brycon argenteus was described by Seth Eugene Meek and Samuel Frederick Hildebrand in 1913, part of their extensive early-twentieth-century survey work on the freshwater and coastal fishes of Panama. It belongs to the genus Brycon, currently placed in the family Bryconidae — the bream-like Brycon and its relatives are treated by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) as distinct from the pacu-and-piranha family Serrasalmidae, even though hobbyists often discuss all these deep-bodied Neotropical characins together under the loose "minor characins" umbrella.
The type locality is Panama, and Brycon argenteus is a Central American endemic restricted to that isthmus, distinguishing it from the many Brycon species distributed across the Amazon, Orinoco and other South American drainages. The species epithet argenteus is straightforward Latin for "silvery," describing the fish's overall coloration.
Morphology
Brycon argenteus has the classic Brycon build: a moderately elongated, laterally compressed, silver-flanked body suited to fast, sustained swimming in current, with a terminal mouth armed for grabbing food rather than the underslung, blade-toothed jaw of a true piranha.
