Brycon bicolor is a little-known Brycon from the upper Orinoco and Caura drainages of Venezuela, described by the French ichthyologist Paul Pellegrin in 1909 from specimens the naturalist Jean Chaffanjon had collected decades earlier. The genus Brycon has a reputation, earned by its larger relatives, for producing powerful, deep-chested "river tetras" that outgrow almost any home tank — B. bicolor is one of the smaller members of that group, topping out at under 4.5 in, but it still carries the family build: a fast, muscular, mid-water fish rather than a delicate nano species. Almost nothing has been published on its biology beyond the original taxonomic description and its inclusion in a modern revision of cis-Andean Brycon, and it is essentially unknown and unassessed in either the conservation literature or the aquarium trade. Taxonomy & naming

Brycon bicolor was described by Paul Pellegrin in 1909, with a type locality on the Rio Orinoco; the type material derives from specimens collected by the French explorer Jean Chaffanjon during his expeditions through the upper Orinoco and Caura region between 1885 and 1890. It belongs to the family Bryconidae (treated by some authors as a subfamily within Characidae) in the order Characiformes, a lineage of fast-swimming, generally omnivorous-to-predatory Neotropical characins that includes some of the largest fish in the group, such as the matrinxã (Brycon amazonicus) and the golden dorado's close relatives.

A taxonomic revision of the cis-Andean species of Brycon places B. bicolor within the Brycon falcatus species group, a cluster of similarly patterned Orinoco- and Amazon-basin species distinguished from one another largely by fin markings and proportions. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name and combination; no synonymy or reclassification affecting the genus is indicated by the available sources, so the species is treated here under its original combination, Brycon bicolor.

Morphology

Brycon bicolor is a modestly sized member of its genus, with a maximum recorded length of 4.5 in standard length — small by Brycon standards, where many relatives push well past 12 in, but still a compact, laterally streamlined, fusiform fish built for open-water swimming rather than for hiding among plants. Like other Brycon, it has a moderately deep body, a terminal mouth set with a row of characiform teeth suited to an omnivorous-to-predatory diet, and a forked caudal fin typical of active mid-water characins.

The species' most distinctive described features are a dark stripe running across the base of the anal fin and a dark blotch that extends from the caudal peduncle onto the upper lobe of the caudal fin — markings used, alongside body proportions, to separate B. bicolor from its close relatives within the Brycon falcatus group. Beyond the original description and the more recent taxonomic revision that reconfirmed these traits, no detailed account of coloration in life, sexual dimorphism, or ontogenetic colour change has been located; the species should be considered essentially undescribed for aquarium purposes.

Habitat

Brycon bicolor is known from the upper Orinoco basin and the Caura River, a major right-bank tributary of the Orinoco, in Venezuela — squarely within the Guiana Shield/upper Orinoco freshwater ecoregion. As with the type material collected by Chaffanjon in the late nineteenth century, records of the species are old and sparse, and no modern ecological or limnological survey specific to B. bicolor has been located in the available sources.
