Brycon amazonicus, the matrinxã, is a large, fast-swimming Neotropical characin from the Amazon, Orinoco and Essequibo drainages that has almost nothing in common with the popular image of a docile silver "minor characin." FishBase records a maximum published length of 18 in standard length, and aquarium literature notes it can reach roughly 19.5 in in captivity — a genuinely big, powerful, food-fish-sized characid, not a modest tetra-relative. It is an important commercial and subsistence food fish across its native range and is farmed at scale in South America, where its migratory, flood-triggered spawning is induced hormonally on fish farms rather than left to occur spontaneously. In the aquarium it is an active, greedy, sometimes aggressive predator-omnivore that quickly outgrows anything but a very large tank, and it is not a fish that gets bred at home.

Taxonomy & naming

Brycon amazonicus was described by the Bavarian naturalists Johann Baptist von Spix and Louis Agassiz in 1829, part of the great early-nineteenth-century wave of description that followed Spix's Brazilian expedition and Agassiz's subsequent work on the fish material he collected. It belongs to the family Bryconidae within the order Characiformes — a family that was split out of the older, broader Characidae and now houses Brycon and its close relatives, the fast-swimming "tetra-like" characins that in several genera, including this one, grow to a substantial adult size.

The genus Brycon is large and taxonomically difficult, with many nominal species historically confused due to strong similarities in body shape and colouration; GBIF and the Catalog of Fishes both treat Brycon amazonicus as a valid, currently accepted species distinct from other regionally similar Brycon such as B. cephalus and B. falcatus, though field identification within the genus is genuinely hard and has a documented history of misidentification in both fisheries and aquarium literature. The common name "matrinxã" is the Portuguese-language name used throughout Brazil for this and closely related Brycon food fish. The name Brycon cephalus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Brycon amazonicus has the classic fusiform, laterally compressed body of a fast-swimming open-water characin: a streamlined, silvery flank, a forked tail, and a moderately large, terminal mouth armed with sharp, closely set teeth suited to an omnivorous-to-predatory diet rather than the fine, brush-like dentition of a grazing characin. FishBase documents a maximum size of 18 in standard length, and aquarium sources note it can approach 19.5 in in captivity — placing it among the larger-bodied minor characins covered here, well beyond the size of a typical tetra or hemiodus.

Colouration is predominantly silver overall, with the characteristic Brycon sheen and, in many individuals, darker fin margins or a subtle dusky wash on the caudal fin; the body is deep enough to read as robust rather than slender, consistent with its life as a strong, sustained swimmer in river channels.

Habitat

The species is native to the Amazon River basin in Brazil and its many tributaries, and also occurs in the Orinoco and Essequibo river basins, making it a broadly distributed South American endemic across major Neotropical drainages. Within these systems it inhabits river channels and associated floodplain habitats, and like many large Amazonian characins it undertakes seasonal movements tied to the flood pulse, using flooded forest and floodplain lakes during high water before returning to the main channels.

The cache does not report specific pH or hardness figures for wild populations; as a broadly distributed Amazon-basin river fish it is reasonable to expect warm, typically soft and slightly acidic conditions consistent with regional norms, but precise water-chemistry data for this species specifically is not confirmed here, and figures should not be over-specified beyond what is documented.

In the aquarium it is reported as a greedy, enthusiastic feeder that will take a wide variety of foods readily. Given its wild diet, a varied offering that includes fruit, vegetable matter, quality pellets and some protein is appropriate; keepers should be aware that a large, food-driven characin of this size produces a correspondingly large bioload and demands proportionate feeding and filtration.

Mating

Brycon amazonicus is a migratory, flood-triggered spawner: reproduction in the wild is tied to the seasonal rise in water level, which serves as the environmental cue that brings fish into spawning condition and initiates upstream or floodplain-directed migration, a pattern shared with several other large Neotropical river characins covered in this atlas (Prochilodus, Semaprochilodus and the dorado Salminus among them). On fish farms, where the species is raised commercially across South America, this natural cue is replicated and reinforced through broodstock conditioning and hormonal induction (hypophysation) rather than left to occur on its own, which is standard practice for migratory characin aquaculture.

Breeding

There is no documented parental care in this species — like other migratory characins it does not guard a nest or its eggs.

This is not a species that gets bred in home aquaria. Prospective keepers should treat matrinxã purely as a display and food-fish species in the hobby context; anyone interested in its reproduction is looking at aquaculture literature and hatchery protocols, not aquarium breeding reports.

In the aquarium

Brycon amazonicus is a large, active, and — per hobby sources — notably aggressive fish in captivity, and the space and food demands that come with a species approaching 19.5 in should not be underestimated. Aquarium Glaser's trade notes describe it as common in the trade but explicitly "demanding" in terms of space and food requirements, and its aggressive behaviour in captivity is called out as a specific management consideration. This is not a fish for a modest community tank; it needs a very large aquarium, robust filtration for its bioload, and tankmates chosen with real caution given its size and temperament.

As with the other large food-fish characins in this group, keepers taking on a matrinxã should plan for its full adult size from the outset — a juvenile bought small will not stay small, and rehoming a 15.5–19.5 in predatory omnivore is far harder than housing it correctly from the start.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Brycon amazonicus as Least Concern, an assessment dated 6 October 2020. This reflects its wide distribution across the Amazon, Orinoco and Essequibo basins and its status as an important, still-abundant food fish rather than a rare or narrowly restricted species; the cache notes no immediate documented threats.

As a species that is both fished commercially in the wild and farmed at scale across South America, Brycon amazonicus illustrates a pattern common among the larger Neotropical food-fish characins: heavy human use, but use that is currently compatible with a healthy overall population, rather than a species in decline. Long-term watch items for Amazon-basin rivers generally — damming of migratory routes, deforestation-linked sedimentation — are relevant to migratory species like this one even though it is not currently classified as threatened.
