Taxonomy & naming
Chalceus spilogyros was described by Angela Zanata and Mônica Toledo-Piza in 2004, in a revision of the genus Chalceus published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society that erected several new species and clarified the boundaries between long-confused forms in the group. The genus Chalceus sits within the characiform family grouping that includes the hemiodontids and other silvery, fast-swimming river characins of South America; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) governs the currently valid name and placement, and this article keeps the genus as Chalceus per that authority.
As with several of the species split out in the 2004 revision, older literature and some aquarium-trade material may still lump Chalceus spilogyros under a broader, now-outdated concept of Chalceus macrolepidotus or similar; the type locality is Igarapé Jacaré, on the right margin of the Rio Tapajós near Boim, Pará, Brazil.
Morphology
Chalceus spilogyros has the classic build of its genus: an elongated, laterally compressed, torpedo-shaped body covered in large, bright metallic scales that flash silver to gold as the fish moves through open water.
