Curimatella immaculata is a small, silver, deep-river grazer from the Orinoco, Amazon, Tocantins and Essequibo (Rupununi) basins of South America — a member of the curimatid family, whose members feed by scraping algae, fungi and organic detritus from submerged surfaces rather than hunting or biting. It carries none of the piranha myth: there is no fin-nipping, no aggression and no oversized adult to plan around, only a modest, unassuming shoaler that tops out under 7.5 in. It is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby, and much of its basic biology — breeding behaviour above all — has never been documented.

Taxonomy & naming

Curimatella immaculata was described by the Venezuelan ichthyologist Agustín Fernández-Yépez in 1948. It belongs to the family Curimatidae, a Neotropical characiform family of small, deep-bodied, toothless-jawed grazers often grouped in hobby and popular writing alongside the hemiodontids and other "minor characins" that share river habitat with the far more famous piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae. The genus Curimatella is one of several curimatid genera separated mainly on details of the mouth, gill-raker count and scale pattern — characters that historically made the family taxonomically difficult, and species-level identification within Curimatella and its relatives still leans on subtle morphological differences rather than colour pattern.

The species epithet immaculata (Latin for "unspotted" or "unmarked") refers to the fish's plain, unmarked silver flanks, distinguishing it by name from curimatid relatives that carry a humeral spot or other body markings. As with much of this family, no old genus combination needs correcting here — Curimatella immaculata is the name recognised by the Catalog of Fishes, and it is retained as such in this account.

Morphology

Curimatella immaculata is a small, laterally compressed characin with the streamlined, silvery profile typical of open-water curimatids: a moderately elongated body, a small terminal-to-subterminal mouth suited to grazing rather than grasping prey, and unremarkable, translucent to lightly dusky fins. FishBase records a maximum length of 7.5 in total length, though field-collected specimens run considerably smaller — a sample from the Quinoá stream averaged just 3 in (under 3 in) TL, suggesting that the great majority of wild individuals are far short of the recorded maximum.

True to its epithet, the species lacks the bold spots, bars or humeral blotches seen in some curimatid relatives, presenting instead as a plain silver fish with a faint dorsal sheen — an unremarkable appearance that likely contributes to how rarely it is noticed or documented outside targeted ichthyological surveys.

The species is native to a broad swath of northern and central South America, recorded from the Orinoco, Amazon and Tocantins river basins as well as the Rupununi River in the Essequibo drainage of Guyana.
