Taxonomy & naming
Curimatella lepidura was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann in 1889. It sits in the genus Curimatella within the family Curimatidae — the toothless characins, a group long treated as a subfamily of Curimatidae/Prochilodontidae relatives before being split out as its own family, distinguished from the pacus and piranhas of Serrasalmidae by tiny or absent teeth and a gut built for processing sediment and organic detritus rather than flesh or plant matter.
The type locality is the São Francisco River basin in Brazil, and the species remains best documented from that drainage. As with many small Neotropical characins, taxonomic literature on Curimatella is comparatively sparse, and no data in the cache indicate a recent generic reclassification — the species is treated here under its current, valid combination, Curimatella lepidura.
Morphology
Curimatella lepidura is a small, laterally compressed, silvery fish typical of the curimatid body plan: a slender, streamlined profile built for holding position in current while grazing over the bottom, with a small, underslung or subterminal mouth suited to picking at sediment and biofilm rather than seizing prey. FishBase gives a maximum published length of 6 in standard length, a modest size consistent with the rest of the Curimatidae — this is not a fish that will ever challenge a tank's footprint the way a pacu or wolf fish would.
Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle: Brazilian reproductive-biology studies report that females grow larger than males and reach a slightly greater size at gonadal maturity (roughly 3 in SL in females versus about 3 in SL in males), which is the main documented difference between the sexes rather than any striking colour or fin distinction.
Habitat
The species is native to the São Francisco River basin of eastern Brazil, one of the country's major independent drainages, running largely through semi-arid and savanna landscapes before reaching the Atlantic. Within that system it has been documented using lentic (calm, still-water) stretches — backwaters, pools and slower reaches rather than fast riffles — which fits its role as a bottom-oriented detritus grazer rather than a rheophilic, current-loving fish.
The cache does not report specific temperature or pH readings for the species' native water, so no numeric range is given here rather than guessing; as a São Francisco basin fish it would be expected to experience the warm, seasonally variable conditions typical of Brazilian lowland and mid-elevation rivers, but that inference should not be read as a measured value.
Feeding

This puts it in the same feeding guild as many curimatids and some of the hemiodontids — quiet grazers working the bottom and biofilm rather than hunting or browsing plants.

Beyond the seasonal timing and the female-larger size dimorphism, no courtship behaviour, pairing, or external spawning cues are documented in the cache, and none should be inferred.
Breeding
The same reproductive-biology literature reports that Curimatella lepidura spawns in lentic (calm, still) water environments within its native basin, consistent with a fish that uses backwaters and pools rather than fast current for reproduction. A 2023 morphological study (Gontijo, published in Anatomia, Histologia, Embryologia) examined the species' reproductive anatomy in further detail, but the cache does not report specifics on egg type, fecundity, or parental care.

There is no size trap, predation risk, or fin-nipping concern documented for this species — the honest caution here is simply that almost nothing about keeping it in captivity has been recorded, so a prospective keeper is working from inference about its wild biology, not established aquarium practice.
Conservation
Curimatella lepidura is assessed as Least Concern. FishBase records the IUCN Least Concern status as of 7 November 2018, consistent with a species that, while restricted to the São Francisco basin, does not appear to face documented range-wide population decline.
As with many single-basin Brazilian characins, the São Francisco River system as a whole faces long-term pressures from damming, water abstraction and habitat modification, which are relevant watch items for the basin's fish fauna generally even though Curimatella lepidura itself is not currently classified as threatened.
