Taxonomy & naming
Characidium fasciatum was described by the Danish zoologist Johannes Theodor Reinhardt in 1867. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Characidium, one of the largest genera in the family and the one most associated with the darting, bottom-perching lifestyle that gives the group its common name. Crenuchidae also contains the sailfin characins (Crenuchus, Poecilocharax), gentle blackwater nano-fish that are a world apart in temperament from the stream-bed darters, so the family spans both quiet leaf-litter dwellers and active riffle specialists.
Characidium is a taxonomically busy genus with a long history of species being described, synonymised and re-split, and identification within it is difficult without close examination of fin-ray counts, scale patterns and the exact banding along the flank — hobby specimens sold simply as "Characidium sp." or under older trade names are common. The genus and species placement here follows the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the standing authority for valid names in this group.
Morphology
Characidium fasciatum is a small, elongated, cylindrical characin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of about 2.5 in, with most aquarium specimens smaller. The body carries a dark lateral stripe or series of blotches along the flank — the "fasciatum" (banded) pattern referenced in the species name — over a pale silvery-brown ground colour that lets the fish blend into sand and gravel. The pectoral and pelvic fins are enlarged relative to many characins, an adaptation that lets the fish prop itself on the substrate rather than hang suspended in the water column.
The posture is the most distinctive field mark: rather than swimming continuously, C. fasciatum rests propped on its fins with the body angled head-up, then darts in a short, rapid burst to a new resting spot — the same perch-and-dart behaviour shared across true darter species in the genus. Habitat
The species is native to the São Francisco and upper Paraná River drainages of Brazil, where it inhabits fast-flowing streams rather than the sluggish backwaters and flooded forest favoured by many of its Characiformes relatives. It is typically found holding position over coarse sand or fine gravel substrate in riffle sections with strong current, using rocks, snags and other cover both to rest against and to dart toward when disturbed.
Water in its native streams runs cooler than the classic Amazonian norm reflected by many aquarium characins: FishBase records a natural temperature range of roughly 64–75 °F, with aquarium keeping recommended nearer 64–72 °F, alongside soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–6.0, hardness dH 1–25°). The upper Paraná and São Francisco systems sit at higher elevation and more subtropical latitude than the core Amazon basin, which is consistent with this comparatively cool preference — a detail worth flagging because it is easy to default to "warm Amazon water" for any South American characin, and that assumption does not hold here.
Feeding
Characidium fasciatum is a micro-predator, not a general grazer or scavenger. In the wild it picks aquatic insects and their larvae from the stream bed and drifting current, taking small, live or recently-active prey rather than plant matter or detritus. This diet lines up with its perch-and-dart hunting style: it waits propped on the substrate and darts out to intercept small invertebrates rather than cruising to forage.
In the aquarium this translates to a fish that often ignores dry flake altogether and does best on small live or frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia and cyclops are all reported as accepted foods, offered in several small portions rather than one large feeding, since the species tends to feed steadily over a couple of minutes rather than in a single rush. Keepers should not assume a darter will compete well against faster, more aggressive tankmates at a shared flake feeding and should target-feed if necessary.
Mating
Detailed courtship behaviour for Characidium fasciatum specifically is not well documented, but breeding within Crenuchidae generally involves brief, close-contact pairing rather than the open shoal-spawning typical of many characins. Hobby accounts describe conditioning a group in a dedicated breeding setup with soft, acidic water, fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, and good water movement — conditions that mimic the fast, well-oxygenated streams the species comes from and appear to help trigger spawning readiness.
External sexual dimorphism is not clearly documented for this species; hobbyists generally rely on conditioning behaviour and relative body fullness in ripe females rather than any consistent colour or fin difference to identify pairs.
Breeding
Characidium species, including C. fasciatum, are reported to scatter eggs over the substrate rather than building a nest or mouthbrooding, and some male parental care — egg-tending behaviour — is noted as common within Crenuchidae more broadly, in line with the brief male-care spawning documented for the family's better-known cave- and leaf-spawning genera such as Crenuchus. This is described in hobby literature as a breeding project accessible to a patient keeper rather than a routine, reliably repeatable spawn.
A separate breeding tank with soft, acidic water, fine-leaved plants for egg deposition and cover, strong but not turbulent water movement, and a well-protected filter inlet (to protect both eggs and any resulting fry from being drawn in) is the setup generally recommended. Specific data on egg count, incubation time and fry-rearing for this species is sparse in the sources available, and this article does not speculate beyond what is documented.
In the aquarium
Characidium fasciatum suits a species or community tank built around current and cover rather than open swimming space. A tank of at least 25 US gal with a coarse sand or fine gravel substrate, strong water movement, and plenty of hiding spots — driftwood, stones, root tangles — lets the fish behave naturally, resting propped against the substrate and darting for cover when startled. A group of six to eight is recommended; the species is not aggressive but does best with company of its own kind rather than as a singleton.
Water should be kept on the cool side for a characin — roughly 64–72 °F in the aquarium — soft and acidic (pH around 5.0–6.0), which sets it apart from many warm-water Amazonian tankmates and argues for a dedicated cool-stream biotope rather than a generic tropical community tank. Because it is a micro-predator that often refuses flake, keepers should plan on small live or frozen foods rather than assuming it will compete for dry food. Monthly water changes of roughly 20–30% are cited as adequate given its moderate bioload. As a small, non-predatory darter it is not a fish that outgrows a home aquarium or poses any handling risk, unlike the piranhas and pacus it shares this family grouping with in the broader atlas.
Conservation

This is common for small-bodied, regionally restricted stream fish in Characidium, a genus with a complicated taxonomic history that makes population-level assessment difficult even where the species itself may be locally common.

As with many small stream specialists, habitat quality in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated reaches of the São Francisco and upper Paraná drainages — sensitive to damming, siltation and water-quality change — is the general category of long-term concern for this kind of fish, though this article does not assert specific pressures on C. fasciatum beyond its Data Deficient listing.
