Curimatopsis guaporensis is a small, toothless detritivore described in 2017 from a single specimen collected in the Rio Guaporé, a tributary of the Rio Madeira on the Brazil–Bolivia border. It belongs to Curimatidae, a large family of silvery, deep-bodied Neotropical characins that quietly account for a huge share of the fish biomass in South American rivers by grazing algae, biofilm and organic detritus rather than hunting or scavenging flesh like their piranha relatives. Almost nothing has been published on this species beyond its original description — the holotype measured just 1 in standard length and was likely an immature fish, so the true adult size, breeding behaviour and aquarium suitability of Curimatopsis guaporensis remain undocumented. This article is honest about that gap rather than inventing detail the literature does not support.

Taxonomy & naming

Curimatopsis guaporensis was described by Melo & Oliveira in 2017 in the Journal of Fish Biology, as one of three new Curimatopsis species described from the Amazon basin in the same paper. The holotype, catalogued as MZUSP 121189, was collected from the Rio Guaporé — a tributary of the Rio Madeira that forms part of the Brazil–Bolivia border — and the species epithet guaporensis directly references that type locality. It is placed within the C. evelynae species group, one of the informal clusters biologists use to organise the genus, and the description distinguishes it from its relatives chiefly by a dark blotch on the caudal peduncle and details of nostril morphology.

The genus Curimatopsis sits in the family Curimatidae within the order Characiformes — the same broad order that contains the piranhas, pacus, silver dollars, hemiodontids and tetras covered elsewhere in this atlas, but Curimatidae is a distinct, toothless lineage of its own. As with many recently described, single-locality Curimatopsis species, C. guaporensis is known only from its original description; no subsequent taxonomic revision, synonymy or additional material has been documented in the sources available for this article.

Morphology

The only measured specimen of Curimatopsis guaporensis, the holotype, is 1 in standard length — a small fish, and one the describing authors treat as likely immature, so it should not be read as the adult size (see Facts below for how this atlas handles that uncertainty). Like other members of its family, Curimatopsis is toothless, with a small, downturned or subterminal mouth built for grazing rather than biting, and a deep, laterally compressed, silvery body typical of Curimatidae.

The original description separates C. guaporensis from its closest relatives within the C. evelynae group using a dark blotch on the caudal peduncle and fine differences in nostril structure — the kind of diagnostic detail typical of a technical species description rather than a field mark a hobbyist could use. Beyond these diagnostic characters, no further morphological data (colour pattern in life, fin counts in detail, or sexual differences) is available in the sources consulted.

Habitat

Curimatopsis guaporensis is known only from its type locality in the Rio Guaporé, a major tributary of the Rio Madeira along the Brazil–Bolivia border, part of the Amazon basin. No survey data beyond the original collection has been documented, so its full range, abundance and habitat preferences within the Guaporé system are undescribed.

Curimatidae as a family is broadly distributed across the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraguay and Guianas river systems, typically in warm, soft, mildly acidic lowland freshwater — commonly cited around 73–82 °F and pH 6–7.5 with soft water in the roughly 2–15 dH range — and the family is benthopelagic, foraging over sediment and submerged surfaces rather than in open water. Whether C. guaporensis matches these family-typical conditions specifically has not been confirmed by targeted study; the type locality data does not include limnological measurements.

Feeding

Curimatidae is a toothless family of detritivores and biofilm grazers, and there is no reason from the original description to think C. guaporensis is an exception — the genus-level diagnosis emphasises jaw and nostril structure rather than any predatory dentition. Family-wide, Curimatidae species feed on organic detritus, algae, biofilm and associated microfauna scraped from submerged surfaces and sediment, a feeding strategy that makes them ecologically important grazers; one study of a related Curimata species notes the family collectively makes up roughly half the fish biomass in some Amazonian river reaches.

No species-specific dietary study of C. guaporensis has been published. Because the only known specimen is a small, likely immature individual, even inferences about ontogenetic diet shifts (common in detritivorous characins as they grow) cannot be made with confidence for this species specifically.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Curimatopsis guaporensis. The species is known from a single holotype specimen collected for taxonomic description, not from field or aquarium observation of live behaviour, so there is no data on pairing, seasonal triggers or sexual dimorphism to report here. Data sparse.

Breeding

There is no published account of Curimatopsis guaporensis being bred, either in the wild or in captivity, and the species has no known presence in the aquarium trade. Many small Curimatidae are, where studied, open-water egg-scatterers with no parental care, consistent with the broader pattern across minor detritivorous characins in this family — but that mode has not been confirmed for this species specifically, and it would be a guess to assert it here. This account does not assign a breeding mode to C. guaporensis; readers should treat its reproductive biology as undescribed.

In the aquarium

Curimatopsis guaporensis is not established in the aquarium hobby. It is known only from a single, likely-immature 1 in holotype collected for scientific description from one river system, and no husbandry, tank-size or dietary guidance specific to this species exists in the literature. Speculating on stocking or care requirements for a fish this poorly known would risk misleading a keeper who might encounter it through the rare specialist import.

As a general point of family context, other small Curimatidae kept occasionally by specialist hobbyists are peaceful, shoaling detritivore-grazers best suited to planted, well-established tanks where they can browse biofilm and supplement it with fine sinking foods — but this is family-level context, not a confirmed care profile for C. guaporensis itself.

Conservation

Curimatopsis guaporensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status (Not Evaluated). This is unsurprising for a species described as recently as 2017 from a single locality and a single specimen — many narrow-range Curimatopsis and other minor Amazonian characins remain unassessed simply because too little is known about their distribution and population to support a formal assessment.

Given that the species is known only from the Rio Guaporé, general pressures on Amazon basin tributaries — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation, and water-quality change — are the relevant long-term watch items, though no species-specific threat assessment exists. There is no evidence of any trade or fishery pressure on this species.
