Taxonomy & naming
Curimatopsis maculosa was described in 2016 by Melo, Vari and Oliveira, based on a holotype (MZUSP 118659, 1 in standard length) collected at Monte Cristo on the Rio Tapajós, in the Amazon basin of Brazil, along with 23 additional paratypes ranging from 0.5–1 in SL. It belongs to the family Curimatidae — small, toothless characins sometimes called "toothless characins" — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Curimatopsis, a group of diminutive detritivores distinguished from other curimatid genera by details of scale count, fin position and mouth structure.
The species epithet maculosa is Latin for "spotted" or "dappled," referring to a prominent small dark spot at the middle of the caudal peduncle that is unique within the genus and serves as the primary field mark separating it from its closest relatives, C. macrolepis and C. microlepis. The description was part of a small wave of new Curimatopsis species published around 2016–2017 from Amazonian tributaries, reflecting how incompletely the smaller-bodied characins of the region have been catalogued even in well-collected rivers like the Tapajós. As with many recently described, narrow-range Curimatidae, there is no evidence the valid combination has been revised since description, and Curimatopsis is retained here as given by the original authors.
Morphology
Curimatopsis maculosa is small even by the standards of a genus built entirely from small fish: the type series spans roughly 0.5–1 in, with the holotype at 1 in standard length. Like other curimatids, it is entirely toothless, carrying an upturned, subterminal mouth adapted for grazing detritus, biofilm and fine organic matter off submerged surfaces rather than biting prey or plant matter. The body is slender and moderately compressed, with the silvery, unremarkable base colouration typical of small characins.
The feature that distinguishes it from its nearest congeners is pigmentation: a small but well-defined dark spot sits at the middle of the caudal peduncle, a pattern element not shared by C. macrolepis or C. microlepis and cited in the original description as the species' clearest diagnostic character. Beyond that spot and the associated posterior midlateral markings, there is little to say about its colour pattern from the available literature — no photographs of live colouration appear to have circulated widely, and most of what is documented comes from preserved type material.
Habitat
The species is known from the Rio Tapajós, a large, historically clearwater tributary that joins the Amazon from the south in Pará state, Brazil. Curimatidae in general, including the related C. macrolepis, are associated with soft, weakly acidic, warm tropical river water, and there is no reason from the available sources to expect C. maculosa to differ meaningfully from that pattern, though no dedicated water-chemistry study of this specific population has been located.
As a toothless detritivore, C. maculosa most plausibly occupies quieter, sediment-rich margins and backwaters within the Tapajós system where fine organic material and biofilm accumulate, rather than fast open channel — a habitat preference inferred from its feeding morphology and from what is documented for its genus rather than from direct field observation reported in the cache.
Feeding
Curimatopsis species are detritivores and biofilm grazers: the toothless, upturned mouth is built to sift fine organic sediment, algae and microbial film from submerged surfaces rather than to capture prey or browse plant tissue. The related C. macrolepis is documented taking soft foods including detritus, small crustaceans such as Artemia and cyclops, and flake food in captivity, and this is the best available proxy for what C. maculosa would need if kept.
Nothing species-specific on wild gut contents or captive diet has been documented for C. maculosa itself; the safest statement is that it almost certainly follows the detritivore/grazer pattern typical of its genus and family, taking fine particulate and soft foods rather than anything resembling a predatory or plant-shredding diet.
Mating
No courtship behaviour has been documented for Curimatopsis maculosa. The species is known essentially from its type series of preserved specimens collected in the Rio Tapajós, and nothing in the available sources describes pairing, colour change, or any other courtship signal in the wild or in captivity.
Breeding
There are no breeding records for Curimatopsis maculosa in the aquarium or in aquaculture. Given its very small adult size, narrow known range and apparent absence from the ornamental trade, it is reasonable to say the species is effectively unbred in captivity, and nothing should be inferred about its reproductive mode beyond the generic expectation — shared by most small Curimatidae — of open, unguarded egg-scattering with no parental care. That expectation is not confirmed for this species specifically, and should be treated as informed inference rather than documented fact.
In the aquarium
Curimatopsis maculosa is not established in the aquarium hobby and there is no trade or care literature specific to this species. It is included here for completeness as part of the Hemiodus & minor characins group rather than as a fish a keeper is likely to source. If it or a close relative such as C. macrolepis were ever kept, the working assumption from genus-level data would be a small, peaceful shoaling fish for a modestly sized, well-planted, soft and mildly acidic tropical setup, fed on fine soft foods and detritus rather than flake alone — but that is extrapolation from related species, not documented husbandry for C. maculosa.
Conservation
Curimatopsis maculosa has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; no listing was found in the search performed for this article, consistent with it being a recently described (2016), narrow-range species known from a single Tapajós locality and a modest type series. As with many recently described, small-bodied Curimatidae from well-collected but under-surveyed Amazonian tributaries, the honest status is data deficient / not evaluated rather than a documented conservation concern one way or the other. The Tapajós basin faces the general pressures common to Amazonian rivers — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation and mining-related water-quality change — which are relevant long-term watch items for any narrow-range endemic there, including this species, even though no species-specific threat assessment exists.
