Curimatopsis macrolepis was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1876. It belongs to the family Curimatidae — the toothless or "toothless characins" — within the order Characiformes, a family closely allied to the detritivorous Prochilodontidae and distinguished by a small, often subterminal mouth lacking functional jaw teeth, an adaptation for grazing organic sediment and biofilm rather than biting prey or plant tissue.
