Taxonomy & naming
Curimatopsis melanura was described in 2018 by Dutra, Melo and Netto-Ferreira in the Journal of Fish Biology, based on a holotype (catalogued MPEG 15335, a 1.5 in SL female) collected from a tributary of the Rio Nhamundá, in the Amazon basin of Brazil. It belongs to the family Curimatidae — a family of roughly 105 described species of small to medium Neotropical characiforms ranging from southern Costa Rica to northern Argentina — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Curimatopsis, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as the valid combination for this species.
Curimatopsis is a small-bodied genus split informally in the literature into two species groups: the C. macrolepis group (around six species, reaching roughly 2.5 in) and the C. evelynae group (around five species), with more than eleven described species recognised as of the early 2020s. Curimatopsis melanura is a recent addition to that count, known so far only from its Rio Nhamundá type locality; no subsequent survey or trade record confirming a wider range has been documented in the sources available for this article, so its distribution should be treated as narrowly known rather than genuinely restricted.
Morphology
As one of the smaller species in an already small-bodied genus, Curimatopsis melanura is known from a holotype measuring just 1.5 in standard length — a size consistent with the broader Curimatopsis pattern, where even the larger species in the genus top out around 2.5 in. No separate maximum-length figure beyond the holotype measurement has been published in the sources reviewed here, so 1.5 in SL should be read as the best available reference point for adult size rather than a hard ceiling.
Like other curimatids, it almost certainly shares the family's toothless, small, subterminal or inferior mouth adapted for grazing biofilm and detritus rather than seizing prey, and a slender, laterally compressed, silvery body typical of small shoaling Characiformes. If its biology follows the general Curimatopsis and Curimatidae pattern — a small (around 1.5 in or less based on the holotype), peaceful, toothless grazer — it would in principle suit a well-planted, densely stocked community aquarium with soft, warm, gently acidic water and other small, non-aggressive Amazonian fish, given a real shoal rather than a lone individual. That said, this is inference from its relatives, not documented care advice specific to the species, and prospective keepers should not expect established husbandry data to exist yet.
Conservation
Curimatopsis melanura has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species described only in 2018 and known from a narrow locality, it currently carries no formal conservation status (Not Evaluated). That is a data gap rather than a clean bill of health — a species known from a single blackwater tributary system is inherently vulnerable to any localised habitat change, such as damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation or mining pressure in the Rio Nhamundá drainage, even though no specific threat has been documented for it.
More broadly, the wider family Curimatidae includes both narrowly distributed, poorly known species like this one and wide-ranging, abundant species that anchor major fisheries, so conservation status varies enormously across the family and should never be generalised from one species to another.
